1. Early Life and Junior Career
1.1. Early Life and Tennis Introduction
Robin Haase was born on 6 April 1987 in The Hague, Netherlands. He began playing tennis at the age of two, showing early promise in the sport.
1.2. Junior Career
As a junior player, Haase compiled a notable singles win-loss record of 76-41. His strong performances led him to achieve a career-high junior world ranking of No. 3 in March 2005. Later in 2005, in his final junior-level tournament, he reached the final of Junior Wimbledon, where he was defeated by Jérémy Chardy with a score of 4-6, 3-6.
2. Professional Career
2.1. 2005-2010: Early Career and Comeback
Haase turned professional in 2005. He started 2006 ranked world No. 665. In June of that year, he made his ATP Tour debut at the Rosmalen tournament, where he lost in the first round to Juan Carlos Ferrero. In September 2006, he debuted for the Netherlands Davis Cup team in the World Group play-offs against the Czech Republic. He lost to Tomáš Berdych in straight sets but secured a win over Jan Hernych after the tie had already been decided. In November, Haase claimed his first Challenger title in Nashville, defeating two players ranked in the top 100. In December, he won his first Dutch Masters title by beating the defending champion, Raemon Sluiter, in the finals of the 2006 Sky Radio Tennis Masters. He also reached three Challenger semifinals that year, ending 2006 ranked world No. 164.
In March 2007, Haase won his second Challenger title in Wolfsburg. In July, he reached his first ATP Tour semifinal at the Dutch Open in Amersfoort, where he defeated a top-100 player, Florent Serra, in the quarterfinals before losing to Werner Eschauer. In doubles, he reached the final with compatriot Rogier Wassen but lost in straight sets. In August, Haase achieved his first top-10 victory at the Rogers Cup, defeating Tomáš Berdych. He made his Grand Slam debut at the US Open as a lucky loser following the withdrawal of Mario Ančić, but he lost in the first round to the third seed and eventual runner-up, Novak Djokovic, in straight sets.
At the 2008 Chennai Open, Haase recorded another top-20 win by beating the second-seeded Marcos Baghdatis in the first round. At the 2008 Australian Open, Haase recorded his first Grand Slam win by defeating 17th seed Ivan Ljubičić in the first round with a score of 6-7(2-7), 6-3, 6-0, 7-6(1-7), though he lost to Sébastien Grosjean in the second round. He pushed Lleyton Hewitt to five sets in the first round of Wimbledon 2008 before ultimately losing. In February 2008, at his home tournament the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, Haase scored a significant upset by defeating then-world No. 10 Andy Murray in the first round with a score of 7-5, 6-3. However, a right knee surgery in September led to him being absent from the tour for over a year.
Haase returned to Wimbledon two years later, in 2010, where he upset James Blake in straight sets in the first round. He then faced world No. 1 and eventual champion, Rafael Nadal, in the second round, losing in five sets but notably taking two sets from Nadal (7-5, 2-6, 6-3, 0-6, 3-6). For his strong return and performances, Haase was awarded the ATP Comeback Award in 2010.
2.2. 2011-2014: First ATP Titles and Major Doubles Final

At the 2011 Australian Open, Haase reached the third round for the first time in a Grand Slam, defeating Juan Mónaco in the second round before losing to Andy Roddick. At Wimbledon in 2011, he beat world No. 22 Fernando Verdasco in the second round in four sets, but retired in the third round against Mardy Fish due to a knee problem.
In August 2011, Haase secured his first ATP title at the Austrian Open Kitzbühel in Kitzbühel. He advanced past Potito Starace due to retirement, then defeated second seed Feliciano López and Andreas Seppi in a rain-delayed day. In the semifinals, he beat qualifier João Souza, and in the final, he overcame experienced clay-courter Albert Montañés 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. At the US Open, Haase reached the second round after beating Rui Machado in straight sets. He then took a two-sets-to-love lead against fourth seed Andy Murray before eventually losing in five sets, despite a spirited comeback in the decider. Haase ended 2011 ranked world No. 45, his highest year-end ranking at that point.
In 2012, Haase withdrew from the Chennai tournament due to visa issues. He lost in the first rounds of Sydney and the Australian Open to Alex Bogomolov Jr. and Andy Roddick, respectively. At the indoor tournament in Zagreb, he reached the quarterfinals, losing to Lukáš Lacko. In February, he contributed to the Dutch Davis Cup team's 5-0 victory over Finland in World Group I, playing both singles and doubles with Jean-Julien Rojer. In Rotterdam and Indian Wells, he lost in the first round to Nikolay Davydenko and Pablo Andújar. After reaching the quarterfinals at the Dallas Challenger, he lost in the second round of the Miami Masters to Jürgen Melzer. The Netherlands secured another 5-0 victory over Romania in the second round of World Group I, with Haase playing two singles matches. In Casablanca, he suffered a surprising first-round loss to world No. 752, Lamine Ouahab. The following week, at the 2012 Monte-Carlo Masters, Haase reached his first Masters 1000 quarterfinal, becoming the first Dutch player to do so in nine years (since Martin Verkerk). He defeated Juan Mónaco (retirement), Fabio Fognini, and Thomaz Bellucci before losing to top seed Novak Djokovic in straight sets, despite breaking Djokovic's serve four times. Haase then successfully defended his title at the Austrian Open Kitzbühel in 2012, defeating Philipp Kohlschreiber. At the 2012 London Olympics, he lost in the first round in both singles and doubles.
In 2013, partnering with compatriot Igor Sijsling, Haase reached the finals of the 2013 Australian Open in doubles, where they lost to the formidable Bryan brothers (Bob and Mike Bryan). He also reached two ATP singles finals later in 2013, losing to Mikhail Youzhny at the Swiss Open Gstaad and to Tommy Haas at the Vienna Open. Haase finished 2013 ranked world No. 43 in singles, his best career year-end ranking at that point, and world No. 56 in doubles. In 2014, he reached the doubles final of the Italian Open with Feliciano López, but they were defeated by Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjić.
2.3. 2015-2018: Masters Semifinals and Grand Slam Doubles Quarterfinals

In 2016, Haase reached another ATP singles final at the Swiss Open Gstaad, where he lost to Feliciano López. In 2017, Haase achieved his best singles result at a Masters 1000 event, reaching the semifinals of the Canadian Open, where he lost to Roger Federer. In doubles, he reached the quarterfinals of the US Open with Matwé Middelkoop. The following year, in 2018, he again reached the singles quarterfinals of the Canadian Open. At the 2018 French Open, he led David Goffin by two sets but ultimately lost in five. He also made it to the doubles quarterfinals at the 2018 Wimbledon Championships with Robert Lindstedt. During this period, he secured three ATP 250 doubles titles: the 2018 Maharashtra Open and 2018 Sofia Open with Matwé Middelkoop, and the 2018 Croatia Open also with Middelkoop. Haase ended 2017 ranked No. 42 and 2018 ranked No. 50 in singles.
2.4. 2019-Present: Continued Doubles Success and Return to Form

In 2019, partnering with Wesley Koolhof, Haase reached the finals of two Masters 1000 events: the 2019 Monte-Carlo Masters and the Canadian Open. These strong performances propelled him to a then-career-high doubles ranking of world No. 30 on 20 May 2019. He also reached the doubles final at the 2019 Hamburg European Open with Koolhof. In July 2019, he won his sixth ATP Tour doubles title at the Croatia Open with Philipp Oswald.
In February 2022, Haase and Matwé Middelkoop clinched the doubles title at the Rotterdam Open, an ATP 500 event. Later that year, he reached the doubles final at the 2022 Swiss Open Gstaad with Philipp Oswald, losing to Tomislav Brkić and Francisco Cabral. He also made the semifinals of the 2022 Libéma Open and 2022 Generali Open Kitzbühel in doubles with Middelkoop and Oswald, respectively, and reached the third round of the US Open in doubles. His singles ranking dropped out of the top 300 in October 2022. However, following a semifinal appearance at the Challenger in Hamburg, he climbed 35 positions back to No. 257 by the end of October 2022.
In 2023, Haase entered the 2023 Adelaide International 2 as a lucky loser and won his first singles match since February 2021, defeating Benjamin Bonzi in three tight sets. This victory moved him back into the top 250 at No. 235. At the 2023 Open Sud de France, he reached his twentieth career doubles final, partnering with Matwé Middelkoop. They went on to win his eighth ATP Tour doubles title, defeating Maxime Cressy and Albano Olivetti. He reached another Masters 1000 doubles final at the Italian Open with Botic van de Zandschulp. In February 2024, he reached the doubles final of the 2024 ABN AMRO Open with Botic van de Zandschulp, marking his second consecutive year reaching the final there. In February 2025, Haase won his ninth ATP Tour doubles title at the Open Occitanie (formerly Open Sud de France) with Botic van de Zandschulp.
3. Playing Style
Robin Haase is known for his powerful serve, which frequently exceeds 124 mph (200 km/h) and is notable for its accuracy. While his double-handed backhand is generally considered less potent than his forehand, he demonstrates capability in both attacking and defending with either wing. When he strikes the ball with a very flat trajectory, he poses a significant threat to top-ranked players. This was evident in matches against elite opponents, such as leading Rafael Nadal by two sets to one at Wimbledon before ultimately losing in five sets, and holding a two-sets-to-love lead against three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray at the US Open before also succumbing in five sets. Haase is capable of executing spectacular shots, including powerful forehand winners down the line while on the run, reminiscent of Pete Sampras, or backhand winners struck on the rise with his left foot in the air. An accomplished doubles player, Haase effectively incorporates net play into his game, not shying away from opportunities at the net. Despite his skill, Haase is a very spirited player who has occasionally struggled to maintain his composure when a match takes a negative turn. Although naturally left-handed, Haase plays tennis right-handed.
