1. Club career
Domínguez has spent a significant portion of his professional career at LDU Quito across two tenures, interspersed with spells at other prominent clubs in Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, and Colombia.
1.1. LDU Quito (2006-2016)
Domínguez began his professional career with L.D.U. Quito in 2006. He steadily rose through the ranks, eventually taking over the starting goalkeeper position from the legendary José Francisco Cevallos. During this successful decade, Domínguez was instrumental in LDU Quito's dominance in Ecuadorian football and their ventures into international competitions. He secured two Ecuadorian Serie A titles in 2007 and 2010.
His contributions extended to continental triumphs, as he helped the club win the 2008 Copa Libertadores, the 2009 Copa Sudamericana, and two consecutive 2009 Recopa Sudamericana and 2010 Recopa Sudamericana titles. Domínguez is recognized globally as one of the top goalkeepers and holds an impressive record within Ecuadorian football for the longest time without conceding a goal. From September 2, 2007, to October 28, 2007, he maintained a clean sheet for an outstanding 719 minutes. Due to his exceptional goalkeeping skills, he earned the nickname "Dida," after the renowned Brazilian goalkeeper of the same name.
1.2. C.F. Monterrey (2016-2017)
On June 22, 2016, Domínguez moved from his long-standing club, LDU Quito, to the Mexican Liga MX club Monterrey. His tenure with the club lasted through the 2016-17 season.
1.3. Club Atlético Colón (2017-2018)
Following his period in Mexico, Domínguez joined Argentine club Colón for the 2017-18 season.
1.4. Vélez Sarsfield (2018-2021)
From 2018 to 2021, Domínguez played for another Argentine club, Vélez Sarsfield.
1.5. Cerro Largo (2021-2022)
Domínguez joined Uruguayan club Cerro Largo as a free agent on August 20, 2021. He made his debut in a league match on September 13, 2021.
1.6. Deportes Tolima (2022)
In 2022, Domínguez moved to the Colombian club Deportes Tolima. During his time there, he contributed to the team's success in winning the 2022 Superliga Colombiana title.
1.7. LDU Quito (2022-present)
On July 16, 2022, Domínguez made a highly anticipated return to L.D.U. Quito, signing a two-and-a-half-year contract. His second spell with the club has been marked by continued success, including another Copa Sudamericana title in 2023. He further cemented his legacy by winning two more Ecuadorian Serie A titles in 2023 and 2024 and contributing to their qualification for the 2025 Supercopa Ecuador.
2. International career
Alexander Domínguez has had a distinguished international career, representing Ecuador at various youth levels before becoming a long-standing member of the senior national team, participating in multiple major tournaments.
2.1. Youth career
Domínguez was an Ecuadorian youth international, representing his country at the 2007 South American U-20 Championship.
2.2. Senior team debut and progression
Domínguez received his first call-up to the senior Ecuador national football team in May 2010 for friendly matches against Mexico and South Korea. However, he remained an unused substitute in these matches. Due to club commitments, he did not receive another call-up until February 2011 for a friendly against Honduras, where he again remained on the bench. His senior international debut finally came on March 26, 2011, in a 2-0 friendly defeat to Colombia, under manager Reinaldo Rueda.
He steadily established himself as Ecuador's first-choice goalkeeper during the rigorous 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. He made 12 appearances for La TriThe Tri-colorSpanish, playing a vital role in securing their spot in the World Cup finals.
2.3. Major tournaments
Domínguez has been a consistent presence in Ecuador's squads for major international tournaments:
- At the 2011 Copa América, he served as a back-up goalkeeper to Marcelo Elizaga.
- In June 2014, he was named in Ecuador's squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. He made his FIFA World Cup debut on June 15 in a 2-1 defeat to Switzerland at the Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha in Brasília.
- He was selected for the 23-player squad for the Copa América Centenario in 2016 and again for the 2019 Copa América.
- In 2021, Domínguez was named in the 28-player squad for the 2021 Copa América, where he notably served as the team captain.
