1. Early Life and Education
Aldila Sutjiadi's early life and educational journey laid the foundation for her successful tennis career, combining academic pursuits with her athletic development.
1.1. Junior Career and Early Development
Sutjiadi began her tennis career as a junior player in 2008 at the age of 13. Her junior career highlights include winning both the singles and doubles competitions at the 2010 Indonesia International Junior Championships. She also reached the doubles semifinals of the 2012 Australian Open Junior Championships. In 2010, at the age of 15, Sutjiadi turned professional, beginning her journey on the ITF Circuit in Jakarta. At 17, she secured gold medals in both singles and women's doubles at the 2012 Indonesian National Sports Week and made her debut with the Indonesia Fed Cup team in 2013.
1.2. College Tennis
Sutjiadi attended the University of Kentucky, from which she graduated in 2017. During her time as a varsity athlete for the Wildcats, she received numerous accolades. She was named a doubles All-American in both 2016 and 2017. In 2016, partnered with Mami Adachi, she won Kentucky's first-ever national championship in doubles at the ITA National Indoors Championship. Her collegiate achievements were further recognized when she was nominated for the 2017 NCAA Woman of the Year Award. Additionally, she was a recipient of the Elite 89 Award in 2015 and 2016, the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award in 2017, and the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar of the Year Award.
2. Professional Career
Aldila Sutjiadi's professional career has seen a steady progression from the ITF Circuit to the WTA Tour, marked by significant breakthroughs and consistent top performances.
2.1. Early Professional Years (2008-2017)
After turning professional in 2010, Sutjiadi gradually built her career. She made her debut in multi-sport events at the 2015 Southeast Asian Games in Singapore, where she earned bronze medals in both the women's doubles, partnering with Jessy Rompies, and the women's team event, alongside Rompies, Lavinia Tananta, and Ayu Fani Damayanti.
2.2. Breakthrough and WTA Tour Debut (2018-2022)
A major turning point came at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. Partnering with Christopher Rungkat in the mixed doubles competition, Sutjiadi won a gold medal for Indonesia by defeating the Thai pair of Luksika Kumkhum and Sonchat Ratiwatana in a hard-fought final. This victory marked Indonesia's first tennis medal at the Asian Games in 16 years. Sutjiadi and Rungkat continued their success at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in Manila, where they defended their mixed doubles gold medal by defeating Sanchai Ratiwatana and Tamarine Tanasugarn. At the same event, Sutjiadi also secured a gold medal in the singles competition, triumphing over Vietnam's Savanna Lý Nguyễn in the final. They further defended their mixed doubles gold medal at the 2021 Southeast Asian Games in Bắc Ninh, overcoming another Thai pair, Patcharin Cheapchandej and Pruchya Isaro.
In July 2021, Sutjiadi reached her first WTA Challenger final at the Charleston Pro, partnering with Erin Routliffe, but they were defeated by Liang En-shuo and Rebecca Marino. In November 2021, she reached another WTA Challenger final at the Midland Classic with Peangtarn Plipuech, but they lost to Harriet Dart and Asia Muhammad.
Her improved ranking allowed Sutjiadi to play more extensively on the WTA Tour in 2022. She made her Grand Slam debut at the 2022 Australian Open in the doubles competition, receiving a wildcard to partner with Peangtarn Plipuech, though they lost in the opening round to the fifth seeds, Alexa Guarachi and Nicole Melichar-Martinez. Sutjiadi then competed alongside Astra Sharma in the doubles competition of the 2022 Copa Colsanitas. They defeated the second-seeded team of Irina Bara and Ekaterine Gorgodze in the quarterfinals, followed by a comeback victory against Beatriz Haddad Maia and Camila Osorio in the semifinals. In the final, Sutjiadi and Sharma prevailed over Tara Moore and Emina Bektas in a match tiebreaker. This victory marked Sutjiadi's first career title on the WTA Tour, and it was the first WTA Tour title for an Indonesian tennis player since Angelique Widjaja won the doubles trophy in September 2003. Following this success, Sutjiadi entered the top 100 in the doubles rankings for the first time, reaching world No. 86. The next month, Sutjiadi partnered with Katarzyna Kawa to win the $100K ITF Charleston Pro Tennis tournament, defeating Sophie Chang and Angela Kulikov in the final.
At the 2022 French Open, Sutjiadi formed a new partnership with Japanese player Miyu Kato. They secured Sutjiadi's first-ever major match win by defeating Tereza Martincová and Andrea Petkovic in the first round, before falling to Caty McNally and Zhang Shuai in the second round. Their partnership continued at Wimbledon, where they lost in the first round. Later in 2022, Sutjiadi and Kato reached the semifinals of the Ladies Open Lausanne and the final of the 2022 Hamburg European Open, where they lost to Chang and Kulikov.
2.3. Recent Years and Peak Performance (2023-Present)
Sutjiadi reunited with Miyu Kato to kick off her 2023 season at the Auckland Open, where they won their first title together, staging a remarkable comeback from being down 1-6, 1-5 in the final against Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Leylah Fernandez to win 1-6, 7-5, [10-4]. This achievement propelled Sutjiadi to a new career-high ranking of world No. 37. They reached the third round of the 2023 Australian Open, seeded 16th, before being defeated by the second-seeded American pair, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula. At the inaugural 2023 ATX Open in Austin, Texas, Sutjiadi partnered with Erin Routliffe to win her third WTA Tour title, defeating top seeds Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Ellen Perez in the final.
Continuing her strong form with Kato, Sutjiadi reached her first WTA 1000-level semifinal at the Indian Wells. At the 2023 French Open, she competed in both women's doubles and, for the first time at a major, mixed doubles. In a controversial incident, she and Kato were disqualified from the women's doubles in the third round when Kato accidentally hit a ball girl with a ball while trying to pass it to her. However, in mixed doubles, partnering with Matwé Middelkoop, Sutjiadi reached the semifinals, her best-ever finish at a major at that point, before losing to her women's doubles partner Kato, who was paired with Tim Pütz. On 23 October 2023, Sutjiadi achieved a new career-high ranking of world No. 26. She and Kato also reached the final of the 2023 WTA Elite Trophy later that month.
In February 2024, Sutjiadi and Kato won the doubles title at the 2024 Thailand Open, defeating Guo Hanyu and Jiang Xinyu in the final. At the US Open, Sutjiadi reached the semifinals with Rohan Bopanna in mixed doubles, marking her third career semifinal appearance at a major. In her debut at the 2024 Wuhan Open, partnering with Leylah Fernandez, she reached her fourth quarterfinal at the WTA 1000 level, overcoming fifth seeds Elise Mertens and Zhang Shuai. They subsequently advanced to the semifinals, her second WTA 1000 semifinal appearance.
