1. Early Life and Junior Racing Career
Frijns' early career in motorsport saw him rise through the ranks of karting and various junior single-seater championships, demonstrating early talent and a consistent ability to secure titles in his debut seasons.
1.1. Karting
Robin Frijns began his karting career actively participating in races across Belgium and France. In 2008, he achieved a third-place finish in the KF2 European Championship category and was the runner-up in the French Championship at the same level, marking his early successes in the sport.
1.2. Formula BMW
Frijns transitioned to formula racing in 2009, joining Josef Kaufmann Racing for the Formula BMW Europe season. In his rookie year, he secured a win at Silverstone Circuit and achieved six podium finishes, ultimately placing third overall in the championship as the highest-ranked rookie. He continued with Josef Kaufmann Racing in 2010, dominating the series by clinching the championship title with six victories, three pole positions, three fastest laps, and thirteen podiums throughout the season, amassing 383 points.
1.3. Formula Renault Series
Following his success in Formula BMW, Frijns advanced to the Formula Renault categories, where he continued his championship-winning streak.
In 2010, Frijns made a guest appearance in the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps round with Josef Kaufmann Racing. He finished second in the first race, fifth in the second, and notably won the third race of the meeting.
In 2011, Frijns competed full-time in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 championship, remaining with Josef Kaufmann Racing. He won the title on his first attempt, securing five race victories, including both races at Silverstone. He finished 45 points ahead of his closest rival, Carlos Sainz Jr.. That same year, Frijns also participated in the Northern European Cup. Despite missing the rounds at Oschersleben, Most, and Monza, he finished fourth overall in the season, with one win and seven podium finishes.
Frijns then moved up to the Formula Renault 3.5 Series in 2012, racing for the British team Fortec Motorsport. He once again claimed the championship title in his debut season, becoming the first rookie champion since Robert Kubica. His season included three wins at Motorland Aragón, Moscow Raceway, and the Hungaroring, along with five podiums and four pole positions.
His title win, however, was not without controversy. In the final race of the season at Barcelona, Frijns was involved in a collision with his championship rival, Jules Bianchi. Bianchi passed Frijns on lap 21, and Frijns then came under pressure from Carlin driver Kevin Magnussen. Frijns moved to block Magnussen, which forced Bianchi wide, leading him to skirt across the gravel trap and into the wall, resulting in his retirement. Frijns finished the race in seventh place, but stewards later added 25 seconds to his race time for causing an avoidable collision, demoting him to fourteenth. Despite the penalty, Bianchi's failure to score and fellow title contender Sam Bird's insufficient points allowed Frijns to secure the championship. In the aftermath, Bianchi accused Frijns of intentionally running him off the road, a charge Frijns denied, stating it was a racing incident.
1.4. GP2 Series
After his 2012 Formula Renault 3.5 triumph, Frijns decided against competing in the 2013 Formula Renault 3.5 Series. With his new role as a test driver for Sauber (which lacked a simulator), his team encouraged him to continue racing in 2013 to maintain race experience.
Following an impressive test with Mercedes' DTM team, Frijns was not offered a drive. He instead sought a seat in the GP2 Series, testing with veteran team Trident Racing and the new team Russian Time. Frijns showed strong pace, and Trident's team principal Maurizio Salvadori expressed interest in him racing for the team. However, a lack of funding forced him to miss the start of the 2013 season in Malaysia.
Before the second race in Bahrain, Frijns announced he would race for the new-for-2013 team Hilmer Motorsport, replacing Conor Daly. He qualified a respectable tenth but struggled with the new Pirelli tyres in the races. A collision in the first race with Stéphane Richelmi while in a points-scoring position further complicated his weekend. Despite these challenges, team principal Franz Hilmer was impressed by Frijns and hoped he could compete full-time.
In only his second weekend with Hilmer, Frijns achieved a victory and a second-place finish at Catalunya, supporting the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix. This marked the first win for Hilmer Motorsport in the series. He continued with Hilmer until the sixth round, after which he lost his seat due to persistent funding issues. Frijns briefly returned for the eighth round at Spa-Francorchamps but again faced a lack of funding, leading to him losing the seat once more.

2. Formula One Test Driver Career
Robin Frijns gained attention from Formula One teams due to his rapid ascent through junior categories and his impressive championship victories.
On October 18, 2012, Sauber announced that Frijns would test their car during the third round of the Young Driver Test at Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, alongside the team's testing and reserve driver, Esteban Gutiérrez. As the top-ranked Formula Renault driver not affiliated with an established Formula One team, Frijns was also invited by Red Bull Racing to join their lineup for the same test. Following his standout 2012 season, ESPN commentator Ben Evans suggested that "anything less than a Formula One race seat next year would be a travesty," highlighting the high expectations for Frijns.
On November 23, 2012, Sauber officially announced that Frijns would become their test and reserve driver for the 2013 season. However, Sauber lacked a simulator at the time, which limited Frijns' practical driving opportunities to only one and a half days during the July Young Driver Test. In September, Sauber confirmed they would not exercise their option to retain him, ending his reserve driver contract. This decision was influenced by Sauber's financial difficulties and the subsequent arrival of Sergey Sirotkin at the team. Frijns publicly expressed his frustration, calling it a "terrible year" and lamenting that Formula One had become overly "dominated by money." In response to this situation, he changed his management team after the season.
On January 21, 2014, Frijns confirmed that he would serve as a reserve driver for Caterham for the 2014 season, continuing his pursuit of a full-time Formula One seat.
3. Professional Racing Career
After his junior single-seater and Formula One test driver stints, Robin Frijns embarked on a successful career in professional racing, competing in various top-tier championships across electric and sportscar disciplines.
3.1. Formula E
Robin Frijns has had an extensive career in the FIA Formula E Championship, competing with various teams and achieving multiple victories and podium finishes.
3.1.1. Andretti Autosport (2015-2017)
In 2015, after participating in pre-season testing at Donington Park, Frijns was announced on August 24 as a driver for Amlin Andretti for the 2015-16 Formula E season, partnering fellow former Sauber test driver Simona de Silvestro. In his debut race at the 2015 Beijing ePrix, he finished tenth. He secured his first podium finish for the team at the 2015 Putrajaya ePrix by finishing third, despite hitting a wall and damaging his rear suspension shortly after overtaking Jérôme d'Ambrosio late in the race. Frijns continued to score points in the subsequent two races, becoming the first Formula E rookie to finish his first four races in the top ten. He consistently scored points for Andretti, making up all of the team's 21 points tally after four races. He concluded the season in twelfth place overall.
For the 2016-17 Formula E season, Frijns was retained by Andretti, partnering with António Félix da Costa. He secured five points finishes, outperforming his new teammate in the standings. However, with Andretti's expanded partnership with BMW for the following season, Frijns lost his seat as his association with Audi, a rival manufacturer, created complexities for the team.

3.1.2. Envision Racing (2018-2022)
After a season away from Formula E, Frijns rejoined the championship with Envision Virgin Racing for the 2018-19 Formula E season, where he was partnered by Sam Bird. The team faced a challenging start at the 2019 Ad Diriyah ePrix, with Frijns starting 20th but recovering to 12th. He secured his first podium for the team at the 2019 Marrakesh ePrix, finishing second after a close battle with Jérôme d'Ambrosio. In Santiago, he drove a controlled race to finish fifth. The 2019 Mexico City ePrix proved forgettable, with Frijns starting 20th due to qualifying issues and finishing 11th. At the 2019 Hong Kong ePrix, Frijns inherited third place, his second podium of the season, after teammate Bird received a penalty. In Sanya, Frijns ran in the top 10 until a collision with Sébastien Buemi and a heavy crash with Lucas di Grassi on the penultimate lap forced his retirement. He finished fourth at the 2019 Rome ePrix, effectively using Attack Mode to pass competitors. For the 2019 Paris ePrix, Frijns started third and took the lead when both Buemi and Oliver Rowland encountered issues. He masterfully navigated torrential rain and hail, holding off André Lotterer with a damaged front wing to secure his maiden Formula E victory. During the cool-down lap, Frijns retrieved a Dutch flag, a pre-agreed celebration. At the 2019 Monaco ePrix, he started from the back but made several overtakes before an ambitious move on Alexander Sims ended his race. In Berlin, technical issues in qualifying relegated him to 22nd, and he finished 13th. At Bern, Frijns was forced to retire due to broken suspension after a first-corner collision with Jérôme d'Ambrosio. In the 2019 New York City ePrix finale, Frijns retired from the first race but secured his second Formula E victory in the second race, climbing from second on the grid. This win placed him fourth in the drivers' championship and helped Envision Virgin secure third in the constructors' championship.

Frijns continued with Envision Virgin Racing for the 2019-20 Formula E season, again alongside Sam Bird. He started the season well with a fifth-place finish in the first race of the 2019 Diriyah ePrix but retired from the second. In Santiago, a spectacular spin in qualifying relegated him to the back of the grid, leading to a 15th-place finish. At the 2020 Mexico City ePrix, he was running in a points-scoring position until a collision with Nyck de Vries led to his eventual disqualification. He finished 12th at the 2020 Marrakesh ePrix. The season concluded with Frijns in 12th place in the standings with 58 points.
For the 2020-21 Formula E season, Frijns remained with Envision Virgin Racing and was joined by new teammate Nick Cassidy. He scored his first points of the season in Round 2 of the Diriyah ePrix, where he secured pole position and a second-place finish. He replicated the second-place result at the 2021 Monaco ePrix, narrowly beating António Félix da Costa by 0.024 seconds. He also recorded the fastest lap in the first Valencia and second London races. Frijns concluded the season in fifth place with 89 points.

Frijns continued with Envision Racing for the 2021-22 Formula E season, again partnering Nick Cassidy. He finished the season seventh in the championship standings, accumulating 126 points and four podium finishes.
3.1.3. ABT Cupra (2023)
Following four consecutive seasons with Envision, Frijns moved to the newly re-entered ABT Sportsline team for the 2022-23 Formula E season, where he was partnered with Nico Müller. The season began at the 2023 Mexico City ePrix, where Frijns was involved in an opening-lap collision with Norman Nato. This incident resulted in a broken left wrist for the Dutchman, requiring immediate surgery. As a result, Frijns was forced to miss the subsequent rounds in Diriyah, Hyderabad, and Cape Town, with Kelvin van der Linde stepping in as his replacement.
Frijns made his return to racing at the 2023 São Paulo ePrix, finishing 14th. During the 2023 Berlin ePrix double-header, he again finished 14th in the first race. However, he achieved a significant breakthrough in the second Berlin race by surprisingly claiming pole position in wet conditions, leading to an ABT Cupra front-row lockout alongside teammate Müller. Despite this strong qualifying performance, he dropped to 17th in the race but still secured his first points of the year from the pole position. His best race finish of the season came at the 2023 Monaco ePrix, where he finished 13th.

Frijns scored points for the first time in a race at the 2023 Jakarta ePrix, finishing ninth in the first race. At the 2023 Portland ePrix, he again salvaged points by finishing tenth, having run as high as third earlier in the race. This was followed by a double retirement at the 2023 Rome ePrix and a 17th-place finish at the 2023 London ePrix to conclude the season. Frijns finished the 2022-23 season 22nd in the standings with six points, marking his least successful Formula E campaign to date and being outscored by his teammate Müller. Shortly before the final race, it was announced that Frijns' contract with ABT Cupra for 2024 had been terminated.
3.1.4. Return to Envision Racing (2024-)
For the 2023-24 Formula E season, Frijns returned to the reigning team champions, Envision Racing, replacing the departing Nick Cassidy and partnering Sébastien Buemi. He continued with Envision Racing alongside Sébastien Buemi for the 2024-25 Formula E season.

3.2. Sportscar and Touring Car Racing
Beyond single-seaters, Robin Frijns has established himself as a highly successful driver in various sportscar and touring car championships, including multiple championship wins and victories in prestigious endurance races.
3.2.1. Blancpain GT Series
In 2015, Frijns joined Belgian Audi Club Team WRT to compete in the Blancpain GT Series with an Audi R8. He partnered with Laurens Vanthoor and Jean-Karl Vernay in the Endurance Series, and primarily with Vanthoor for the Sprint Series. Despite missing the opening round at Nogaro due to a qualifying crash, the team rebounded with double victories at Brands Hatch and Zolder. Another victory at the Algarve International Circuit helped Frijns secure second place in the Sprint Series standings, narrowly losing the title in the final round to Vincent Abril and Maximilian Buhk. In the Endurance Series, two early podiums placed Frijns in championship contention, but failing to score points at the 2015 24 Hours of Spa hampered his title hopes. Nevertheless, Frijns accumulated enough points across both series to be crowned the overall 2015 Blancpain GT Series champion in his debut year of sportscar racing.

Frijns continued with Team WRT in 2016, competing in both the Endurance and Sprint cups. He was unable to defend his overall Blancpain title that year. His season highlights included a sole win in the Sprint series finale, which helped his full-time teammate Enzo Ide secure the drivers' title, and a victory at the 2016 Sepang 12 Hours alongside Christopher Haase and Laurens Vanthoor.
In 2017, Frijns remained with WRT, partnering Stuart Leonard in the Sprint Cup and participating in selected rounds of the Endurance Cup. Despite missing the opening Sprint event, Frijns dramatically clinched the drivers' championship by winning the final race, aided by issues encountered by his title rivals.
3.2.2. Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM)
On January 29, 2018, it was announced that Frijns would join Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) for the 2018 season, replacing Mattias Ekström. In his debut DTM season, he finished 13th overall with two podium finishes.

For the 2019 season, Frijns continued with Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline alongside Nico Müller. He finished fifth overall in the drivers' championship, a result attributed more to his consistent performance than outright wins, as he achieved five podiums without a victory.
The 2020 season proved to be Frijns' most successful in DTM. Remaining with Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline and Nico Müller, he secured his maiden DTM win at his home circuit in Assen. He went on to claim two more victories and a total of ten podium finishes, concluding the season in third place, just behind his teammate. At the end of the season, Audi announced its withdrawal from official DTM engagement, leading to Frijns' departure from the championship.
3.2.3. FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC)
Robin Frijns has achieved significant success in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), particularly in the LMP2 class.
In 2021, Team WRT announced its entry into the FIA World Endurance Championship with an Oreca 07, naming Robin Frijns as one of its drivers on January 21. He shared the car with Charles Milesi and Ferdinand Habsburg. After a challenging first race, the team went on to win the final three races of the season, including the prestigious 2021 24 Hours of Le Mans. Frijns was driving the car during the 24 Hours of Le Mans when their sister car, which had been leading the race, stopped on the final lap. This turn of events allowed Frijns' car to inherit the lead, and he successfully defended against the chasing Oreca 07 of Tom Blomqvist, winning the race by just over 0.7 seconds. This victory, combined with their strong performance, secured the World Championship title for Team WRT in their debut season.

Frijns remained with Team WRT for the 2022 season, partnering Rene Rast and Sean Gelael. The season began strongly with a second-place finish at the 2022 1000 Miles of Sebring and a victory at the 2022 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, which propelled them into the championship lead. However, despite Frijns securing pole position for the 2022 24 Hours of Le Mans, the team was forced to retire from the race after Frijns crashed during the 18th hour. Another setback occurred at the subsequent 2022 6 Hours of Monza, where a twelfth-place finish meant the team missed out on points. Despite a strong end to the season, with victories at Fuji (where Frijns experienced a radio issue during the race) and the Bahrain finale, the points-less middle part of the campaign meant the team narrowly missed out on the championship to Jota, finishing second in the standings.
In the 2023 season, Frijns was retained by Team WRT, again alongside Ferdinand Habsburg and Sean Gelael. The season was marked by a series of unfortunate incidents. The trio lost out on a podium finish at the 2023 24 Hours of Le Mans due to a suspension problem. They were also denied victory at Monza because of a rare failure of the Gibson engine. At the Bahrain race, a wheel gun issue during their final pit stop dropped Frijns to second place, behind their title-winning sister car. Frijns, Habsburg, and Gelael concluded the championship in fourth place by the end of the year.
