Kārlis Skrastiņš died tragically on September 7, 2011, in the 2011 Lokomotiv Yaroslavl plane crash. The incident occurred when a Yakovlev Yak-42 passenger aircraft, carrying nearly the entire Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team, crashed just outside Yaroslavl, Russia. The team was en route to Minsk, Belarus, to play their opening game of the KHL season against HC Dinamo Minsk. Reports indicated that the plane crashed approximately 1.2 mile (2 km) from Minsk-1 Airport. Skrastiņš was among the 44 people who died in the accident, which included players, coaching staff, and prospects. Another former NHL player, Ruslan Salei, who had been traded for Skrastiņš in 2008, also perished in the same crash.
