Menezes completed his law degree at the prestigious University of Coimbra in Portugal. Following his graduation, he practiced as a lawyer in his home country for three years, gaining professional experience in the legal field.

2.2. Transition to the entertainment industry

In 1998, after his legal career, João Costa Menezes made a significant decision to pursue his passion for acting, leading him to relocate to London. His dedication to film was further solidified through education, as he took a film course at the London Film School and participated in several workshops at the Raindance Film Festival. His acting career began in 1999 with his first role as Luis in the BBC series Sunburn. He subsequently appeared in other notable television series, including Gormenghast and Jonathan Creek.

3.1. As a director and producer

Menezes has a notable track record as a film director and producer, creating works that have garnered recognition and awards. His directorial debut was the short film Zero, shot in London in 2000, where he also served as an actor and producer. This film received a special prize at the Huesca Short Film Festival in Spain. In 2001, he directed his first feature film, Akasha, a no-budget video production that was distributed in Russia and nominated for the prestigious Méliès d'Argent award in 2001. Akasha also premiered in the United States at the Atlanta Film Festival.

His work extended to music videos in 2004, when he directed Melancholic Ballad (for the Left Lovers) for the band The Fingertips. This music video achieved significant success, reaching number one on Sic Radical and earning the Best Music Video Award at the Arouca Film Festival. In 2007, Menezes directed the short film Remember My Dream, which featured English model Jakki Degg. His 2008 short film, Mulheres, Bah!, premiered at the renowned Fantasporto Film Festival and was presented at the 2008 Cannes Short Film Corner. This film starred London's West End singer and actress Madalena Alberto. Beyond directing and producing, Menezes is also credited with roles as a video editor, screenwriter, and cinematographer in various projects.

As an actor, João Costa Menezes has taken on diverse roles across film and television, including voice-over work and stunt performances. Early in his career, he appeared in television series like Sunburn, Gormenghast, and Jonathan Creek in 1999. In cinema, he performed stunts in the film Kiss Kiss (Bang Bang) and portrayed a Roman Soldier in the critically acclaimed film Gladiator. His voice-over credits include providing the voice of a fly in the film Serial Killer and contributing to Apple Inc.'s 2007 advertising campaign for Portugal.
