Gu Gyo-dong was born on September 3, 1972, in Jinju, Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea.

He completed his middle school education at Jinju Bongwon Middle School and his high school studies at Jinju Mechanical High School. Gu later matriculated at Korea National Sport University, a prominent institution known for fostering athletic talent.
2. Fencing Career
Gu Gyo-dong's career as a competitive fencer was marked by his consistent performance and medal-winning achievements at various international tournaments.
2.1. National Team Debut and Early Competitions
Gu was first selected to the national team in 1991 while still enrolled at Korea National Sport University. His exceptional skills led to his selection for the South Korean national fencing team. His debut in international competition occurred in April 1991, when he participated in the Heidenheimer Pokal in Heidenheim, Germany, where he placed 144th in the individual épée event.
2.2. 1992 Summer Olympics
In July 1992, Gu Gyo-dong represented South Korea at the 1992 Summer Olympics held in Barcelona, Spain. He competed in the team épée event. During the competition, he faced opponents from the Swedish national team, including Jerri Bergström and Péter Vánky. Gu lost his bout against Bergström with a score of 1-5 and was defeated by Vánky with a score of 3-5.
2.3. World Fencing Championships
Gu had a notable presence at the World Fencing Championships. In July 1994, he competed at the 1994 World Fencing Championships in Athens, Greece, where he ranked 70th in the individual épée event. More significantly, at the same championship, he was part of the South Korean team that secured the country's first-ever team épée bronze medal in fencing history. His teammates in this achievement were Lee Sang-gi, Yun Won-jin, and Lee Sang-yeop. Later, at the 2002 World Fencing Championships in Lisbon, Portugal, Gu Gyo-dong made history by winning the individual épée bronze medal, becoming the first male épée fencer from Asia to achieve this distinction at the World Championships.
2.4. Asian Games
Gu Gyo-dong also achieved success at the Asian Games. He represented South Korea in the team épée event at both the 1994 Asian Games and the 2002 Asian Games, earning a bronze medal in both instances.
3. Coaching Career
Following his successful competitive career, Gu Gyo-dong transitioned into coaching, taking on significant roles in South Korean fencing. He has served as the director for the Gwangju Metropolitan City Seogu Office Fencing Team. Additionally, he holds the position of director for the South Korean Men's Épée National Team, guiding the next generation of fencers.
