1. Early Life
Ethan Shea Horvath was born on June 9, 1995, and raised in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. His family has a strong background in soccer; his father, Peter Horvath, played college soccer for the Midwestern State Mustangs and professionally for the Major Indoor Soccer League club Denver Avalanche, while his mother, Deana, played high school soccer. Horvath himself began his youth career playing with the U.S. Soccer Development Academy side Real Colorado and also attended Arapahoe High School. To further his development, he trained with several clubs in England, including Bristol City, Manchester City, and Stoke City. Horvath has Hungarian ancestry through his father's side, and he also holds a Hungarian passport. He is 76 in (193 cm) tall and weighs 185 lb (84 kg).
2. Club Career
Horvath's professional club career began in Norway and has seen him play for several teams across Europe, including stints in Belgium and England, where he contributed to two club promotions to the Premier League.
2.1. Molde FK
Horvath signed his first professional contract in 2013 with Molde FK in the Tippeligaen (now Norwegian Premier League), having been recruited by Molde manager and former Manchester United player Ole Gunnar Solskjær. He first appeared in a Molde matchday squad on August 10, 2013. His professional debut came on May 16, 2015, when he replaced Ørjan Nyland in the 55th minute of a match. On July 1, 2015, Nyland was transferred to Bundesliga club Ingolstadt 04, which made Horvath, at just 20 years old, Molde's starting goalkeeper. By the end of the 2015 Tippeligaen season, Horvath had played a key role in Molde conceding only 31 goals, the second-best record in the league, behind only champions Rosenborg.
In European competitions, Horvath played a significant part in Molde's campaigns. He backstopped Molde to a 5-1 aggregate victory over Pyunik in the second qualifying round of the 2015-16 UEFA Champions League. However, they were eliminated in the third qualifying round by Dinamo Zagreb on a 4-4 aggregate loss, due to the away goals rule. Later, in the playoff round of the 2015-16 UEFA Europa League, Horvath helped Molde secure a 3-3 aggregate win on away goals against Standard Liège, qualifying the club for the Europa League Group A. This achievement placed him among an exclusive group of American goalkeepers, including Brad Friedel, Kasey Keller, Tim Howard, and Brad Guzan, who have played in the UEFA Europa League/UEFA Cup group stage.
Horvath's strong performances earned him recognition, as he was named to the Europa League Team of the Week on October 2, 2015. This came a day after he was named Man of the Match for a 1-1 draw against Ajax, where he made 10 saves, most notably from a point-blank header by Viktor Fischer. He guided Molde to a first-place finish in their Europa League Group A, navigating successful two-legged fixtures against Ajax, Celtic, and Fenerbahçe. During matches against Fenerbahçe, he notably made two saves against Robin van Persie and three against Nani. Combining his play in both the Tippeligaen and the Europa League, he maintained a streak of over two months without allowing multiple goals in a single match. In February 2016, Molde faced eventual Europa League champions Sevilla in the knockout phase, suffering a 1-3 aggregate defeat, although Horvath managed to keep a clean sheet in the second leg.
2.2. Club Brugge
On January 3, 2017, Horvath transferred to Club Brugge in Belgium, signing a four-and-a-half-year contract. He made his debut as Club Brugge's starting goalkeeper on May 5, 2017, during the Championship playoffs. Despite an early mistake where he conceded a goal due to confusing a whistle from the stands with the referee's whistle, Horvath quickly recovered. He made three crucial saves and even provided an assist to José Izquierdo with a long punt in a 3-1 victory over Charleroi. In the subsequent match, a 1-1 draw against Anderlecht, Horvath made four saves, including a significant stop from a penalty kick attempted by Youri Tielemans. He continued as the starting goalkeeper until the end of the season, helping Club Brugge secure a spot in the 2017-18 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round.

At the start of the 2017-18 season, Horvath initially retained his position as the primary goalkeeper for Club Brugge, starting in the first twelve league matches, which included ten victories. He also featured in the Champions League qualifying matches against İstanbul Başakşehir and Europa League qualifying matches against AEK Athens; however, both campaigns resulted in aggregate defeats. Following these matches, he was eventually benched and largely excluded from the squad for a significant portion of the season. He did not regain a consistent run of starts until May 2018, during the Belgian First Division A Championship Playoffs. He started three matches in these playoffs, as Club Brugge clinched the championship, thereby qualifying for the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League group stage.
For the 2018-19 season, Horvath began on the bench, serving as backup to Croatian international goalkeeper Karlo Letica. However, he soon reclaimed the starting role. During the UEFA Champions League group stage, Horvath achieved a notable trio of consecutive clean sheets against prominent clubs: AS Monaco, Borussia Dortmund, and Atlético Madrid. Ahead of the 2019-20 season, the arrival of Simon Mignolet to Club Brugge once again relegated Horvath to the second-choice goalkeeper, resulting in him being used only sparingly by the club.
2.3. Nottingham Forest
On July 13, 2021, Horvath joined EFL Championship side Nottingham Forest on a free transfer, following the expiration of his contract at Club Brugge. He played a crucial role in the club's promotion to the Premier League. On May 29, 2022, Horvath came on as a substitute in the 90th minute of Forest's 1-0 play-off final victory over Huddersfield Town at Wembley Stadium, due to an injury sustained by starting goalkeeper Brice Samba. His appearance helped secure Nottingham Forest's return to the top flight of English football.
2.4. Luton Town (loan)
On July 2, 2022, Horvath was loaned to Championship side Luton Town for the duration of the 2022-23 season. He played a significant role in their successful campaign, helping them achieve promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs.
2.5. Cardiff City
On February 1, 2024, Horvath signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with Welsh EFL Championship club Cardiff City for an undisclosed fee, where he continues his career.
3. International Career
Ethan Horvath has been a consistent presence in the United States national team setup, from youth levels to the senior squad, participating in major international tournaments and making decisive contributions.
3.1. Youth National Teams
Horvath has represented United States youth teams at every level, starting from the U-14 squad. He was selected for the U.S. under-20 squad to compete in the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup held in New Zealand. However, his club, Molde, did not release him for the tournament, preventing his participation. He later served as the U.S. under-23 starting goalkeeper for the CONCACAF-CONMEBOL Olympic qualifying playoff against Colombia. In this two-match series, the U.S. team conceded two goals and ultimately lost on aggregate, failing to qualify for the Olympics.
3.2. Senior National Team
Horvath was named to the 23-man U.S. squad for the Copa América Centenario in June 2016. Then-head coach Jürgen Klinsmann identified Horvath as "one of his biggest hopes for the future" in the goalkeeper position. On October 7, 2016, Horvath made his full U.S. debut, playing the entire match and keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0 victory over Cuba.
On May 24, 2021, Horvath was included in the United States' roster for the 2021 CONCACAF Nations League Finals. In the final match on June 6, 2021, against Mexico, Horvath was substituted into the game during the second half after starting goalkeeper Zack Steffen sustained a non-contact knee injury. Horvath proved instrumental in the United States' dramatic 3-2 victory, making several critical saves. His most decisive moment came in extra time when he saved Andrés Guardado's penalty, which would have tied the score and likely sent the game to a penalty shootout. For his heroics, Horvath was subsequently named the man of the match.
On November 9, 2022, Horvath was selected for the United States' roster for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. During the tournament, he served as backup to Matt Turner and did not see any playing time.
4. Personal Life
Ethan Horvath holds a Hungarian passport, owing to his Hungarian ancestry on his father's side.
