Drissa Diakité was born on February 18, 1985, in Bamako, the capital city of Mali. His early life and upbringing took place in his native Mali.
3. Club career
Diakité's professional club career spanned several countries, beginning in Mali and Algeria before he spent significant time in France and a brief period in Greece.
3.1. Early professional clubs
Diakité began his professional football journey in Mali, playing for the club Djoliba AC. Following his time in Mali, he moved to Algeria where he joined MC Alger, marking his first experience with club football outside his home country.
3.2. OGC Nice
In the January 2006 transfer window, Drissa Diakité made a significant move to the French club OGC Nice for an undisclosed fee. At Nice, he became a versatile player, deployed primarily as a defensive midfielder or a right-back. He quickly became a fan favorite due to his unwavering physical commitment on the field, although this aggressive style also led to him frequently receiving cards.
Diakité made his debut for OGC Nice as a substitute for Marama Vahirua in a 3-0 loss against Olympique de Marseille. In the second half of his first season (2005-06), he made five appearances. During the 2006-07 season, his playing time increased significantly, making 25 appearances. In March 2007, he was linked with potential transfers to prominent European clubs such as Newcastle United, Everton, and Real Zaragoza, with reported offers around 3.50 M GBP. At this time, he was notably described as a blend of the qualities of Patrick Vieira and Zé Roberto. Diakité subsequently signed a contract extension that committed him to OGC Nice until 2010.
For the 2007-08 season, Diakité made 22 appearances. On November 3, 2007, during a 0-0 draw against FC Sochaux-Montbéliard, he received his first straight red card while playing for Nice. In the 2008-09 season, he extended his contract again, this time until 2011, and went on to make 31 appearances. He maintained this level of appearance in the following season as well. The 2010-11 season proved to be more challenging for Diakité, as he incurred two cards and suffered an injury. In his final season with the club, 2011-12, his playing time was further restricted after he sustained a crack in his fibula, limiting him to 16 appearances.
OGC Nice informed Diakité in February 2012 that he would not be offered a new contract, leading to his release from the club at the end of the 2011-12 season. This marked the conclusion of his six-year association with the French side. While he was a fan favorite, his final three seasons at Nice were generally considered to be below average by many observers.
3.3. Olympiacos
In the summer of 2012, Diakité moved to Greece to join the club Olympiacos on a one-year contract. However, his tenure at the Greek club was brief and less successful, as he made only four appearances and struggled to secure a regular place in the first team. At the end of the 2012-13 season, Diakité was released by Olympiacos. Despite his limited play, he was part of the Olympiacos squad that won the 2012-13 Super League Greece title.
3.4. SC Bastia and later clubs
After a single year in Greece, Diakité returned to French football, signing a two-year contract with Bastia on May 29, 2013. Following his time with Bastia, he continued his career in France. Currently, he plays for Championnat National 3 club Lucciana.
