Mikael Ishak (ميكائيل إسحاقMikael IsḥāqArabic) is a Swedish professional footballer who plays as a forward for Ekstraklasa club Lech Poznań, where he serves as the team captain. Born on 31 March 1993, Ishak began his professional career with Assyriska FF in 2010. His club career has spanned across multiple countries, including Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Denmark, and Poland. A full Sweden international since 2015, he has earned seven caps and scored one goal for his national team, and notably represented the Sweden Olympic team at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
2. Early life and career
Mikael Ishak was born in Södertälje, Sweden. His parents were Assyrian migrants from Syria. He began his football journey by being included in the first team of his hometown club, Assyriska FF, in 2010, marking the start of his professional career.
3. Club career
Mikael Ishak's club career began in Sweden before transitioning to various European leagues, where he consistently demonstrated his scoring ability and leadership, eventually becoming a key figure for Lech Poznań.
3.1. Assyriska FF
Ishak started his senior club career at Assyriska FF, where he played for two seasons. During his tenure from 2010 to 2011, he made 47 league appearances and scored 13 goals for the club in the Superettan.
3.2. 1. FC Köln
In December 2011, Ishak was signed by German Bundesliga club 1. FC Köln after a successful trial. He made his debut for the team on 21 January 2012, coming on as a substitute in the 85th minute in a 1-0 away defeat against VfL Wolfsburg. After initially being used primarily as a substitute, Ishak made his first start for the club on 18 March, playing the entire match in a 4-1 away loss against Hannover 96, due to a suspension for regular striker Lukas Podolski. He made a total of 11 appearances for 1. FC Köln during his first season. He also played for the reserve team, 1. FC Köln II, making 5 appearances and scoring 2 goals between 2011 and 2013 in the Regionalliga.
3.2.1. Loan to FC St. Gallen
In February 2013, Ishak moved to Swiss club FC St. Gallen, which had recently been promoted to the Swiss Super League, on a six-month loan deal to gain more playing time. He established himself as a regular starter for the club until he suffered a mandibular fracture while playing for the Sweden U21 team. Ishak returned to play in late April as a substitute against FC Zürich, and became a full-time starter again the following week. He made a total of 13 league appearances for St. Gallen, scoring three goals.
3.3. Parma
Ishak joined Italian Serie A club Parma on a four-year contract on 5 August 2013. However, he did not make any appearances for Parma during his brief spell there.
3.3.1. Loan to Crotone
Following his arrival at Parma, Ishak was immediately loaned out to Crotone, a team competing in Serie B. He made his debut for Crotone on 24 August 2013 in a match against Siena. On 24 September, he scored his first goal for the club in a 3-1 home victory over Modena. He made 24 appearances and scored 4 goals during his loan spell.
3.4. Randers FC
In August 2014, a year after joining Parma, Ishak moved to Danish Superliga club Randers FC, signing a three-year contract. He enjoyed a highly successful period at the club for two-and-a-half years, scoring 31 goals in 71 league appearances. He also made 2 appearances and scored 1 goal in the UEFA Europa League with Randers.
3.5. 1. FC Nürnberg

After a successful spell at Randers, Ishak joined German 2. Bundesliga club 1. FC Nürnberg in January 2017, six months before his contract with Randers was set to expire. On 25 November 2017, he scored Nürnberg's 1000th goal in the 2. Bundesliga in a match against Eintracht Braunschweig. At the end of the 2017-18 season, Ishak achieved Bundesliga promotion with the club. He scored his first Bundesliga goal on 1 September 2018, which was an important equalizer in an away game against Mainz 05, ending in a 1-1 draw. In total, he made 77 league appearances for Nürnberg, scoring 17 goals, and contributed 3 goals in 7 cup appearances.
3.6. Lech Poznań
On 14 July 2020, Ishak joined Polish club Lech Poznań on a free transfer, signing a three-year contract and taking the number 9 shirt. In his first season in Poland, despite missing over a dozen games due to health issues, he became Lech's top scorer with 20 goals across all competitions. This included two goals against Benfica and three goals against Standard Liège during the 2020-21 UEFA Europa League group stages.
The 2021-22 campaign proved highly successful for both Lech and Ishak. Named captain before the start of the season, he improved his health and statistics, scoring 18 league goals to lead Lech to their eighth Ekstraklasa title. This included an 88th-minute winner against Piast Gliwice on 8 May 2022, which propelled Lech to the top of the league table with two games remaining.
Ishak opened the 2022-23 campaign by scoring the only goal in a UEFA Champions League first qualifying round match against Azerbaijani side Qarabağ on 5 July 2022. Despite ongoing health concerns throughout the season, he participated in 19 of Lech's 20 European matches, scoring nine goals as the Poznań club reached the UEFA Europa Conference League quarter-finals. In November 2022, he extended his contract until June 2025, reportedly becoming the highest-earning player in the Ekstraklasa at that time. He was the club's top scorer for the third consecutive season with 20 goals across all competitions.
On 13 April 2024, Ishak made history by becoming Lech's all-time top foreign scorer, surpassing Christian Gytkjær, after scoring his 66th goal in a 2-1 away loss against Puszcza Niepołomice. Later that year, on 5 November, he signed another new contract, committing him to the club until mid-2027.

Ishak played for the Sweden U19 team, making 8 appearances and scoring 3 goals. Ishak made his competitive international debut for Sweden on 24 September 2022, in a 2022-23 UEFA Nations League B game against Serbia, entering as a substitute in the 85th minute of a 1-4 loss.
