1. Personal life and background
Jin Boyang's personal history is rooted in a family with an athletic background, which influenced his early life and nickname. Despite initial parental reservations about a figure skating career, his talent in dance movements during primary school led to their support.
1.1. Early life and education
Jin was born on October 3, 1997, in Harbin, China. He began skating at the age of seven and a half, sparked by an interest after attending an ice show featuring Chinese pair skaters Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo. His first coach was Wang Junxiang. Before fully committing to competitive skating, he took various dance classes, including ballet, Latin, jazz, and street dance.
He enrolled at the Harbin Institute of Physical Education in 2013 and later pursued a Master's Degree at Beijing Sport University in 2019.
1.2. Interests and family background
Jin's parents were competitive middle to long-distance runners, a background that fostered his love for running alongside skating. His family name, Jin (金), means "gold," which led to some media sources calling him "Golden Boy." He is also widely known by the nickname "Tian Tian" (天天) among Chinese skating fans, which was his childhood name. Some Chinese media also refer to him as "Mars Boy" (火星男孩), reflecting his extraordinary technical prowess.
Beyond skating, Jin enjoys a variety of hobbies, including pets, electronics, music, internet activities, remote-controlled cars, car racing, and collecting shoes. He also likes go-karting, motorcycling, and skiing, though he generally avoids these activities to prevent injuries that could impact his skating career. His favorite elements in skating are jumps, while he dislikes step sequences. His favorite skaters include Alexei Yagudin, Evgeni Plushenko, Yuzuru Hanyu, and the pair Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo.
2. Career
Jin Boyang's career spans from his foundational junior years, marked by rapid development in jumping abilities and significant international junior titles, to his senior career where he became a prominent figure in men's figure skating, known for his groundbreaking quad jumps and consistent competitive presence at the highest levels.
2.1. Early years and junior achievements (-2015)
Jin's early career established him as a prodigious talent, particularly noted for his groundbreaking development of quadruple jumps and consistent success on the junior circuit.
2.1.1. Foundations and jump development
At the age of 11, Jin began to focus specifically on jumps. By the 2009-2010 season, at 12 or 13 years old, he had mastered five different triple jumps. He landed his first triple Axel in May 2010. His first quadruple toe loop was achieved at age 14, followed by his first quadruple Salchow at 15. The quadruple Lutz, which would become one of his signature jumps, was first landed in practice in 2013, and he first successfully performed it in competition at the age of 17. Jin initially had no intention of performing the quad Lutz in competition; he simply wanted to accomplish it.
2.1.2. Junior Grand Prix and World Junior success
Jin made his international debut in the junior division of the 2011 Asian Open Trophy, winning the event by a significant margin. His total score of 177.17 points would have placed him second in the senior men's division. Notably, his feet were so small that he had to wear girls' skates with black boot covers due to the unavailability of men's boots in his size.
In the 2012-2013 Junior Grand Prix (JGP) series, Jin secured a gold medal in Courchevel, France and a silver in Bled, Slovenia. At the JGP Final in Sochi, Russia, he finished fifth after attempting two quadruple jumps in the free skate for the first time in an international competition. He earned a bronze medal at the 2013 Chinese Championships and placed fourth at the 2013 World Junior Championships in Milan, Italy, narrowly missing the podium.
The 2013-2014 JGP season saw Jin win both of his assignments in Riga, Latvia and Tallinn, Estonia, competing with two types of quadruple jumps (quad toe loop and quad Salchow) in his free skate. He then qualified for the JGP Final in Fukuoka, Japan. Despite placing fifth in the short program, he delivered a strong free skate with three clean quadruple jumps, achieving a technical score over 88 points, and won the gold medal overall. This marked his first attempt at three quadruple jumps in a single program, all of which were successfully landed. He also claimed his first senior national title at the 2014 Chinese Championships. At the 2014 World Junior Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, he finished sixth. In April 2014, he attempted his first quad Lutz in a domestic competition, although he fell (the rotation was credited).
During the 2014-2015 season, Jin won both of his JGP events in Slovenia and Japan, making him the only skater to win both assignments and the top qualifier for the Junior Grand Prix Final in Barcelona, Spain. He placed second in the short program with a personal best, attempting two quads (quad toe loop and quad Salchow) in the short program for the first time. However, a fifth-place finish in the free skate saw him drop to fourth overall. He secured his second national title at the 2015 Chinese Championships and concluded his junior career with a silver medal at the 2015 World Junior Championships in Tallinn, Estonia, after placing first in the free skate.
2.2. Senior career (2015-present)
Jin's senior career has been defined by his continued technical innovation, breakthrough performances on the world stage, and persistent efforts to overcome injuries and maintain his competitive edge.
2.2.1. Breakthrough and World Medals (2015-2017)

The 2015-2016 season marked Jin's senior international debut. A viral video of him landing a quadruple Lutz-triple toe loop combination in practice circulated in the summer. At a national event early in the season, he successfully executed this combination in his short program and landed four quadruple jumps in his free skate, achieving a total of six quads during the competition.
At the 2015 Cup of China, Jin won the silver medal, making history as the first person to land a quad Lutz-triple toe loop combination in competition and the first to land a quad Lutz with a positive Grade of Execution (GOE) in international competition. He also became the first skater to attempt four quadruple jumps in a single program. He set a record for the highest points scored on one element, with his short program jump combination earning 19.19 points. At the 2015 NHK Trophy, he took silver behind Yuzuru Hanyu, who acknowledged Jin's pivotal role in the future of figure skating's quad development. Jin qualified for the 2015 Grand Prix Final in Barcelona, finishing fifth. He also won the 13th National Winter Games of China, landing all planned quadruple jumps.
At his Four Continents debut in Taipei, Jin landed six quadruple jumps across his programs, achieving personal bests. He became the first skater to land three different types of quads in a single program (quad Lutz, quad Salchow, two quad toe loops) and the first to land four quads in a single program in international competition. He narrowly placed second, only 0.38 points behind Patrick Chan. At the 2016 World Championships in Boston, Jin won the bronze medal, becoming the first Chinese man to medal in men's singles at the World Championships.
For the 2016-2017 season, Jin traveled to the United States for specialized footwork classes, which he described as very tiring, involving squats with a shot put to control body balance. He placed fifth at the 2016 Skate America and won silver at the 2016 Cup of China. He did not qualify for the Grand Prix Final. He won his fourth consecutive Chinese national title. He competed at the 2017 Four Continents Championships, where he attempted a quad loop for the first time in competition, finishing fifth. He also won silver at the 2017 Asian Winter Games. Jin earned his second consecutive World bronze medal at the 2017 World Championships in Helsinki, achieving new personal bests and surpassing 300 points for the first time. His quad Lutz attempt in the free skate received a GOE of 2.57. He was part of the first all-Asian men's podium at a World Championship, finishing behind Hanyu and Shoma Uno. He expressed satisfaction with his performance, calling it a "real bronze medal" earned through his own abilities. His program component score improved significantly, with an 8.71 in skating skills.
2.2.2. Olympic debut and challenges (2017-2019)
The 2017-2018 season began with a car accident in August 2017, which left Jin with injuries to his left thigh. Despite this, he won gold at the 2017 CS Finlandia Trophy. He suffered sprained ankles before the 2017 Cup of China, where he placed second. He finished fourth at 2017 Skate America and qualified for the Grand Prix Final, but he withdrew due to his injuries. He also missed the Chinese Championships but was selected for the Olympics based on his overall performance.
At the 2018 Four Continents Championships, Jin achieved a personal best of 100.17 points in the short program and scored 200.78 points in the free skate, for a total of 300.95 points, winning his first senior international gold medal at an ISU Championship. His quad Lutz in the free skate received high GOE. He expressed confidence that this result would help him deliver two perfect performances at the Pyeongchang Olympics.

Jin placed fourth at the 2018 Winter Olympics with a new personal best of 103.32 points in the short program and a total score of 297.77. This marked the highest Olympic placement for a Chinese man in singles skating history. However, after the event, a judging controversy arose when the Chinese judge who scored the men's singles event was sanctioned by the ISU for allegedly giving excessively high scores to Jin, the home country's athlete. At the 2018 World Championships, he placed fourth in the short program but dropped to nineteenth overall after a challenging free skate.

For the 2018-2019 season, it was initially announced that Jin would train with Brian Orser and Tracy Wilson in Canada, but these plans were canceled. The Chinese Skating Association cited Jin's familiarity with the training environment in China. He placed fifth at the 2018 Grand Prix of Helsinki and ninth at the 2018 Internationaux de France. Jin later revealed that he experienced travel difficulties for both Grand Prix events, arriving later than expected. He had been training at a rink in Beijing, separate from the national team, and traveled to Harbin when he felt "stagnant." He also hired his own dance teacher. He felt more confident after the Olympics and collaborated with choreographer Lori Nichol, contributing his own ideas.
After winning another Chinese national title, he competed at the 2019 Four Continents Championships, where he earned the silver medal after placing third in the short program and second in the free skate. He noted an improvement in his mental approach. He concluded the season at the 2019 World Championships in Saitama, where he placed ninth in the short program due to a fall on his quad Lutz, but rose to fifth overall after a strong free skate. He acknowledged the need for continued improvement in speed, technique, and style, stating that he had "finally gained a good feeling in the last few competitions."
2.2.3. Grand Prix gold and Beijing Olympics (2019-2022)

Jin began the 2019-2020 season with a victory at the 2019 CS Lombardia Trophy, setting a new personal best in the short program with 101.09 points. He placed third at the 2019 Shanghai Trophy. At 2019 Skate America, he placed sixth overall after errors in his short program. At the 2019 Cup of China, he again fell on his quad Lutz in the short program, placing second. However, he won the free skate, landing two quads and recovering to claim his first Grand Prix gold medal overall.
His performance qualified him for the 2019-20 Grand Prix Final for the third time in his career, his first appearance since the 2015-2016 Final. At the Final in Turin, he finished sixth in the short program and fifth overall, noting issues with his skates and a need for greater mental maturity. At the 2020 Four Continents Championships, he placed second in the short program but dropped to fourth overall after doubling two attempted quads in the free skate. He was assigned to the 2020 World Championships in Montreal, but the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
For the 2020-2021 season, Grand Prix events were localized due to the pandemic. Jin competed at the 2020 Cup of China, winning with a clean short program and a long program featuring the highest technical difficulty among competitors, despite some errors. He also aimed for artistic growth, choosing a slower tempo for his short program music. Before the 2021 World Championships, Brian Orser and Tracy Wilson were officially added to his coaching team. Jin finished twenty-second at the World Championships, and his combined placement with Yan Han was not enough to secure more than one spot for China at the 2022 Winter Olympics.
The 2021-2022 season saw Jin training alone in a closed-loop environment due to the pandemic, as his coach, who had diabetes, could not be with him daily. He was initially assigned to the 2021 Cup of China, but after its cancellation, he was reassigned to the 2021 Gran Premio d'Italia. In October, before the Olympic test event, the 2021 Asian Open Trophy, he contracted appendicitis but chose conservative treatment over surgery to compete. He won a bronze medal at the event. In November, at the Gran Premio d'Italia, he placed first in the short program but dropped to seventh after a problematic free skate.
China's men's Olympic entry was determined by five trials. Jin maintained a consistent lead over Chen Yudong across all rounds, accumulating enough points to be named China's representative for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. He began the Games as China's entry in the men's short program of the Olympic team event, placing sixth and securing five points. In the free skate segment, he placed fourth, adding seven more points. Team China ultimately finished fifth overall in the team event. In the men's individual event, Jin scored 90.98 in the short program, finishing 11th. He set a new personal best technical score of 97.23 in the free skate, earning 179.45 for the segment and finishing ninth overall with a total of 270.43. He expressed relief and encouragement, stating he had overcome the challenges of the past four years and achieved his goals as an athlete from the host country.
2.2.4. Post-Olympic era and ongoing career (2022-present)

Following the Beijing Olympics, Jin's parents initially wanted him to retire, but he expressed a strong desire to continue competing, aiming to represent China for the next four years and inspire more children to engage in figure skating. His new coaches were officially announced as Brian Orser and Tracy Wilson, a move that had been previously planned but unfeasible for face-to-face coaching due to pandemic restrictions. He was assigned to the 2022 Skate Canada International and 2022 NHK Trophy for the 2022-2023 Grand Prix season but withdrew from both due to injury.
During his initial months with the new coaching team, Jin struggled with strength, limiting his jump practice, and his programs were not finalized until December. He competed at the 2023 Four Continents Championships in Colorado Springs, placing fourth in the short program. He revealed ongoing struggles with injuries and two recent bouts of COVID-19, but expressed optimism about his new coaching arrangement, calling it a "brand new start." His short program music, Seven Nation Army, had been changed twice due to his condition, and he only began full run-throughs two weeks before the competition. He dropped to seventh place after the free skate, citing pain that affected his jump practice. The high altitude of Colorado Springs also impacted him, as his stamina had decreased after his COVID-19 infections. In a post-competition interview, he shared that his long program, set to "This" by Ed Sheeran, was designed to express his feelings about moving to Canada for training, with movements often improvised and then integrated.
Jin competed at the 2023 World Championships, scoring 75.04 in the short program, 129.18 in the free skate, and finishing 22nd overall with 204.22. He acknowledged his continued lack of strength due to health concerns and hoped to "make progress every day" to prepare for the 2026 Olympics.

In the 2023-2024 season, his new training mate Rika Kihira praised Jin's inspiring progress, noting his return from doubles to stunning quad Lutzes and his off-ice work ethic. Jin began his season at the 2023 CS Autumn Classic International, finishing fifth overall with 230.99 points. He reported being "totally fine" in his recovery and looking forward to the season. He placed third at the 2023 Shanghai Trophy with 238.33 points.
At his first Grand Prix event, the 2023 Grand Prix de France, he finished eighth overall with 226.79 points. He then placed seventh at the 2023 Cup of China with 237.28 points. Jin won both segments and the gold medal at the 2023 CS Golden Spin of Zagreb with a total score of 258.67. At the 2024 Four Continents Championships in Shanghai, he scored 89.41 points for fifth place in the short program, emphasizing his focus on program completeness over difficulty. He landed a quad Lutz in his long program, earning a high GOE of 3.61, and placed fifth in the segment with a season's best of 167.48, finishing fifth overall with 256.89. He expressed satisfaction despite mistakes from rushing.
In February 2024, Jin competed at the 14th Chinese National Winter Games in Hulunbuir, winning gold in both the team and individual events. He scored 93.60 in the individual short program, deciding on a quad Lutz-triple toe loop combination just minutes before his skate. He won the long program with 173.89 points, achieving an overall score of 267.49. Jin participated in the 2024 World Championships, scoring 58.53 in the short program and not qualifying for the free skate.
For the 2024-2025 season, Jin chose Sam Ryder's "Fought & Lost" for his short program, finding the lyrics reflective of his situation. At the 2024 Grand Prix de France, he landed a quad toe loop, triple Axel, and an impressive triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination in the short program, surprising many by leading with 88.12 points despite feeling unwell upon arrival. However, he placed eleventh in the free skate, dropping to eighth overall, and withdrew from the gala due to injury. He finished eighth again at the 2024 Cup of China. He later withdrew from the 2024 Chinese Championships due to a worsening long-standing back injury.
3. Skating style and technique
Jin Boyang is renowned for his exceptional technical prowess and mastery of quadruple jumps, which have earned him nicknames such as "Mars Boy" and "Quad King." His influence on the sport's "quad revolution" is widely acknowledged by peers and experts.
3.1. Signature elements and jump prowess
Jin is celebrated for his command of quadruple jumps, particularly the quad Lutz. He is capable of executing three different types of quadruple jumps: the toe loop, Salchow, and Lutz. He consistently attempts and lands complex jump combinations, with his quad Lutz and quad Lutz-triple toe loop combination frequently described as "famous," "massive," "beautiful," "huge," and "stunning" by fellow skaters like Olympic Champion Nathan Chen.
He has stated that he enjoys all jumps and has no dislikes, with the quadruple Lutz being his favorite. Jin is also recognized as one of the few skaters who can accurately differentiate between Lutz and flip jumps, rarely receiving edge error calls. He has consistently increased the difficulty of his jump layouts throughout his seasons, managing to minimize errors in most competitions to achieve high technical scores. In a Grand Prix Final free skate, he included a quad Lutz, quad Salchow, quad toe loop, and quad toe loop-double toe loop combination, breaking the 100-point barrier in technical scores with 101.86 points.
3.2. Role in the "quad revolution"
Jin Boyang is widely considered one of the primary catalysts behind the dramatic "quad revolution" that transformed men's figure skating. Some credit him with initiating this shift, acknowledging his significant influence on the evolution of quadruple jumps in the sport. Two-time Olympic Champion Yuzuru Hanyu notably attributed the proliferation of different quad jumps in men's skating to Jin, stating that Jin's successful quad Lutz attempts made other skaters realize its human possibility, effectively "pulling us all up to the level where we are today." Jin himself modestly attributes his role in the quad revolution to simply being "lucky" to have started skating during its earlier phase.
4. Major records and achievements
Jin Boyang has achieved several historical milestones in figure skating, particularly concerning quadruple jumps:
- First skater ever to land a quadruple Lutz-triple toe loop combination in competition.
- First skater to have landed six quadruple jumps in any ISU competition.
- First skater to have landed four quadruple jumps in a single program in an international competition (at the 2016 Four Continents Figure Skating Championships).
- First skater to have landed three different types of quadruple jumps in a single competition (at the 2016 Four Continents Figure Skating Championships).
- First skater ever to have successfully performed a quadruple Lutz at the 2016 World Figure Skating Championships.
- First Chinese World medalist in Men's singles.
5. Programs and music
Jin Boyang's programs have featured a diverse range of music, from classical and cinematic scores to contemporary popular songs, choreographed by notable figures in the sport.

7. Reception and legacy
Jin Boyang is widely respected within the figure skating community for his technical innovations and contributions to the sport's evolution. However, his career has also seen moments of controversy.
7.1. Public and peer reception
Jin's technical prowess and groundbreaking quad jumps have garnered him significant recognition and admiration. Olympic Champion Nathan Chen has described Jin's quad Lutz and quad Lutz-triple toe loop combination as "famous," "massive," "beautiful," "huge," and "stunning." Two-time Olympic Champion Yuzuru Hanyu explicitly credited Jin for pushing the boundaries of men's skating by successfully landing the quad Lutz, making other skaters realize its possibility and effectively "pulling us all up to the level where we are today." More recently, Rika Kihira, one of Jin's training partners, highlighted his inspiring dedication, noting how he progressed from attempting doubles to mastering stunning quad Lutzes, and cited him as a significant source of learning both on and off the ice.
7.2. Controversies
At the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, a controversy arose concerning the judging of the men's singles event. The Chinese judge on the panel was subsequently sanctioned by the ISU for allegedly awarding excessively high scores to Jin Boyang, the athlete from their home country. This incident led to an investigation and disciplinary action by the ISU, aimed at upholding the integrity of competitive judging.
8. Coaches
Jin Boyang has been coached by several individuals throughout his career:
- Wang Junxiang (first coach)
- Jiao Zhongyi
- Chen Xiujing
- Fu Caishu (until 2022)
- Xu Zhaoxiao (until 2022, and again from 2024-present). Xu was notably the first Chinese figure skater to compete at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics.
- Brian Orser and Tracy Wilson (2020-2021, 2022-present)
