Beyond his acting roles, Kanagawa is an accomplished playwright and screenwriter. He served as a writer and story editor for the television series Da Vinci's City Hall from 2005 to 2006. His play Indian Arm, an adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's Little Eyolf, received critical acclaim, winning the 2015 Jessie Richardson Theatre Award for Outstanding Script. In 2017, Indian Arm further solidified its recognition by winning the Governor General's Literary Award for English-language Drama. He also wrote and adapted the stage play Tiger of Malaya in 2003.
