1. Overview
Daniel Baskara Putra, professionally known as Hindia, is a prominent Indonesian singer-songwriter, record producer, and composer. He gained recognition as the lead vocalist for the rock band .Feast and later as the frontman for the band Lomba Sihir. In 2018, Putra launched his solo career under the moniker Hindia, releasing his debut studio album, Menari dengan Bayangan, in 2019, followed by the double album Lagipula Hidup Akan Berakhir in 2023. His work spans various genres, often characterized by introspective lyrics and social commentary.
2. Early Life and Background
Daniel Baskara Putra was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, on 22 February 1994, and grew up in Bintaro. During his childhood, he developed an early interest in online gaming, which served as a gateway to his passion for visual design. He began creating designs for his game clans and experimented with applications like Adobe Photoshop. From elementary to junior high school, Putra aspired to become an architect, believing it to be a financially viable career path at the time. He stated, "If I was asked, 'What do you want to be when you grow up?' I always answered 'Architect,' because that was the only thing that made money (at the time). It wasn't until I entered ninth grade that I learned about 'Visual Designer,' and that's where I changed my direction."
During high school, Putra started playing in a band, though not seriously, as his primary interest remained in visual arts. It was during this period that he conceived his stage name, Hindia. The name originated from a study tour to a museum in Yogyakarta, where he encountered a painting by Raden Saleh depicting the Dutch East Indies (Hindia BelandaIndonesian). He recalled, "At that time, the name was already there, but the music wasn't yet in my mind." The name resonated with him, even before his musical direction was fully formed.
Approaching his university years, Putra received a scholarship offer to study in Singapore, but he ultimately chose to enroll in the Communications program at Universitas Indonesia. It was there that he began to seriously develop his musical projects. He met Adnan Satyanugraha Putra, who would become the guitarist for .Feast. Initially, .Feast started as a duo consisting of Baskara Putra and Adnan. He described the early days: "At that time, .Feast was just two people. Just me and Adnan, we were looking for session players, at that time for the song 'Camkan,' until we met Dicky, Bodat (an ex-member), and Awan. We gradually felt comfortable playing with them, until we finally thought about forming a serious band." Putra continued his solo project as Hindia several years after .Feast had established itself and required less intensive management.
