1. Early life and youth career
David Mota Veiga Teixeira do Carmo was born on 19 July 1999 in Aveiro, Portugal, and is of Angolan descent. He began his football journey at a young age, joining his hometown club Beira-Mar in 2008 and playing there until 2009. From 2009 to 2011, he was part of the Casa do Benfica Estarreja academy. He then moved to the Benfica youth academy, where he trained from 2011 to 2013. However, during his time at Benfica, Carmo struggled to match the physical strength of his teammates. This challenge led him to return to his home district in Aveiro District, where he joined the more modest club Anadia in 2013, and later Sanjoanense from 2014 to 2015. He also had a brief second spell at Beira-Mar in 2014. At the age of 16, in 2015, Carmo joined the youth academy of Braga, where he continued his development until 2018.
2. Club career
Carmo's professional club career began with Braga's reserve team before progressing to their senior squad. He then moved to Porto in a record-breaking transfer, which was followed by loan spells and a permanent transfer to Nottingham Forest before returning to Olympiacos on loan.
2.1. Braga
Carmo joined Braga's youth academy at the age of 16 in 2015. His senior debut occurred on 18 August 2018 for their reserves in the Liga Portugal 2, playing the entire match in a 1-0 home loss against Estoril. He made a total of 27 appearances for the B team in the 2018-19 LigaPro season, which ended in relegation for the reserves. In the 2019-20 season, he made 13 appearances and scored two goals for Braga B. He also made one appearance for Braga B in 2021-22 Liga 3.
Carmo received his first call-up to Braga's first team on 17 May 2019, though he remained an unused substitute in a 2-0 Primeira Liga home win over Portimonense on the final matchday of the 2018-19 Primeira Liga season. He made his first top-flight appearance on 17 January 2020, replacing Raul Silva at half-time in an away fixture against Porto. Early in his debut, he conceded a penalty, though Tiquinho Soares failed to convert it, and the match ultimately ended in a 2-1 victory for Braga.
On 25 October 2020, during a 1-0 local derby win against Vitória de Guimarães, Carmo was sent off for a foul on Marcus Edwards. This incident triggered a melee that resulted in one more player from each team also receiving a red card. Subsequently, Carmo and his teammate Fransérgio were suspended for three games, while opponent Jorge Fernandes received a two-match ban.
On 12 November 2020, Carmo extended his contract with Braga for an additional two years, securing his stay until 2025. In February 2021, Liverpool reportedly made a generous offer for Carmo, involving a 4.00 M EUR loan fee with an obligation to buy in the subsequent winter transfer window. However, Braga's manager Carlos Carvalhal convinced Carmo to remain with the team, citing the difficulty of finding a suitable replacement within the tight timeframe. On 10 February 2021, in the first leg of the Taça de Portugal semi-finals against Porto, Carmo suffered a broken leg following a collision with Luis Díaz. Díaz was sent off after a video assistant referee review of the incident in the match, which ended in a 1-1 home draw.
Carmo returned to action with the first team 375 days after his injury, playing the full match in a 1-0 away victory over Tondela on 20 February 2022. He scored his first goal for the club on 14 April in an away match against Rangers during the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League. His 83rd-minute header was not enough to prevent Braga's elimination, as they lost 3-1 away and 3-2 on aggregate. Despite the elimination, Carmo's performance earned him the Primeira Liga Defender of the Month award for April 2022, a period during which Braga achieved six consecutive wins, including five matches without conceding a goal. On 15 May 2022, Carmo was sent off again during a 3-2 loss to local rivals Famalicão after retaliating when struck by Riccieli. He received a two-game suspension for this incident.
2.2. Porto
On 5 July 2022, Carmo signed a five-year contract with Porto. The transfer fee was 20.00 M EUR plus 2.50 M EUR in add-ons, making it the highest transfer fee ever paid between two Portuguese clubs. This record surpassed the previous one set by Rafa Silva's 2016 move from Braga to Benfica, which was valued at 16.40 M EUR. Due to his previous red card incident with Braga, Carmo was suspended for Porto's Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira victory over Tondela. He made his debut for the reserve team on 7 August 2022, when the second-tier season began with a 1-0 home loss to Covilhã.
Carmo made his first-team debut for Porto on 3 September 2022, contributing to a 2-0 win at Gil Vicente, a match in which he notably won all his aerial duels. Four days later, he made his maiden appearance in the UEFA Champions League, playing in a 2-1 group-stage loss away to Atlético Madrid. However, his performance became a point of contention after he gave away a penalty against Club Brugge in the Champions League, an action that manager Sérgio Conceição criticized as "unnecessary and childish." Following this incident, Carmo was frequently omitted from Porto's matchday squads. His 106-day period out of the first team ended on 12 February 2023, when he appeared as a last-minute substitute in a 2-1 away win against Sporting CP.
At the start of the 2023-24 season, Carmo played the full 90 minutes in a 1-0 away victory over Estrela da Amadora. His performance earned praise from manager Conceição, who, in the post-match press conference, named him and Pepe as the best players on the field. Despite this, in December 2023, Carmo was relegated to Porto B, reportedly due to "inappropriate behavior within the work group."
2.3. Olympiacos
On 26 January 2024, Carmo joined Super League Greece club Olympiacos on loan until the end of the 2023-24 Super League Greece campaign. Reports indicated that the deal included a 600.00 K EUR loan fee and an optional buying clause of 18.00 M EUR. During his loan spell, Carmo played a crucial role in Olympiacos's victorious run in the UEFA Europa Conference League. He made nine full appearances in the competition, including playing the entire 1-0 victory against Fiorentina in the final.
2.4. Nottingham Forest and subsequent loan
On 25 August 2024, David Carmo agreed to a five-year deal with Premier League club Nottingham Forest. Following this permanent transfer, he was immediately loaned back to Olympiacos until June 2025, allowing him to continue his tenure with the Greek club.
3. International career
Carmo has represented Portugal at various youth levels and eventually made appearances for the senior national teams of both Portugal and Angola.
3.1. Portugal
Carmo represented Portugal at both under-19 and under-20 levels. He participated in the 2018 UEFA European Under-19 Championship, initially starting on the bench. However, after Diogo Queirós was sent off in a group stage match against Italy, Carmo secured his place in the starting lineup. He made four appearances for the Portuguese team, who ultimately emerged as champions in Finland. He also featured in the 46th edition of the Toulon Tournament.
On 20 May 2022, Carmo received his first call-up to the senior side from manager Fernando Santos for the 2022-23 UEFA Nations League matches against Spain, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic. In October of the same year, he was included in a preliminary 55-man squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
3.2. Angola
On 12 March 2024, David Carmo received a call-up to the Angola national team, exercising his eligibility through his Angolan descent. He made his debut ten days later, on 22 March, in an international friendly against Morocco. The match, held in Agadir, ended in a 1-0 defeat for Angola, with Carmo scoring an own goal in the 72nd minute, which proved to be the only goal of the game.
4. Style of play
David Carmo is predominantly a left-footed player. His physical stature, standing at 77 in (196 cm) and weighing 181 lb (82 kg), is a significant asset in his defensive style and overall ability. He is characterized as a "front-foot defender" who actively engages in both ground and aerial duels. Carmo excels at anticipating and cutting out dangerous plays by stepping in to intercept passes or physically challenging attackers off the ball. His physicality allows him to be a dominant presence, particularly in the air.
Beyond his defensive strengths, Carmo also demonstrates quality in possession. His long-range distribution is one of the main features of his skillset. He is adept at executing precise switch passes to the opposite wing and delivering forceful, penetrating passes down the channels, contributing to offensive transitions from the back.
