1. Early Life and Background
1.1. Youth Career and Football Beginnings
Cvitanich began his formative football years within the youth academy of Club Atlético Banfield, an Argentine professional football club. This early training established the foundation for his professional career.
2. Club Career
Darío Cvitanich's professional club career was extensive, taking him across multiple leagues and continents, with notable contributions to several teams and multiple returns to his childhood club, Club Atlético Banfield.
2.1. Banfield (First Stint)
Cvitanich made his professional debut for Banfield's first team at the age of 19 on 20 October 2003, in a match where they faced a 3-1 defeat to Olimpo de Bahía Blanca. During this initial period, he demonstrated his scoring ability, including a significant hat-trick in a 4-0 victory against Newell's Old Boys on 27 April 2007. He also played a crucial role, scoring a goal for Banfield in the Copa Libertadores 2007. Prior to his departure from his boyhood club, Cvitanich showcased his loyalty and skill by scoring 13 goals during Banfield's campaign in the Clausura 2008 tournament, a performance that earned him the top scorer title for the season.
2.2. Ajax
Following his impressive performances at Banfield, Cvitanich signed a five-year contract with Dutch club Ajax, officially joining them at the end of the 2008 season. He was notably labeled as the successor to the prolific striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. Cvitanich scored his first goal for Ajax on 12 December 2008, in a match against NAC Breda. In the weeks that followed, he continued his scoring run, netting his first brace against De Graafschap and then his first hat-trick against ADO Den Haag. He secured another hat-trick during the 2009-10 season, again against NAC Breda.

2.3. Loan to Pachuca
On 1 January 2010, Cvitanich moved to Mexican side Pachuca on a year-long loan deal. During his spell with Pachuca, he was instrumental in helping the club secure their fourth CONCACAF Champions League title. After this successful loan period, he returned to Ajax on 3 November 2010, contributing to the club's achievement of their 30th Dutch league title.
2.4. Loan to Boca Juniors
In July 2011, Cvitanich signed a one-year loan deal with Argentine giants Boca Juniors. He marked his first goal for the club on 28 August 2011, against San Lorenzo de Almagro. Cvitanich continued to score in crucial matches, including a goal against Godoy Cruz, two goals against his former club Banfield, and additional goals against All Boys and Newell's Old Boys. He played a significant role in Boca Juniors' undefeated run to win the 2011 Argentine Primera División Torneo Apertura. Furthermore, he helped the team reach the final of the 2012 Copa Libertadores, where they faced Brazilian club Corinthians. His contributions were recognized when he was voted the Copa Libertadores player of the week in the 10th week of the tournament in April.
2.5. OGC Nice
On 25 July 2012, Cvitanich transferred to French Ligue 1 club OGC Nice, signing a three-year contract. He became a key attacking player for Nice during his time in France.
2.6. Pachuca (Second Stint)
Cvitanich returned to Mexican club Pachuca on 5 January 2015. However, his second stint was cut short due to a second knee injury, which led to him missing the remainder of the tournament. Following this injury, Pachuca mutually agreed to release him from the team, and Franco Jara was subsequently hired as his replacement.
2.7. Miami FC
After leaving Pachuca, Cvitanich joined Miami FC in the North American Soccer League (NASL). His signing was announced on 21 December 2015, and he played for the club during the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
2.8. Banfield (Second Stint)
In February 2017, Cvitanich made his second return to Banfield, marking his first time back at the club in nine years. He continued to feature prominently for the club during this period.
2.9. Racing Club
Following his second stint at Banfield, Cvitanich joined Racing Club in 2019, where he remained until 2021. During his time with Racing Club, he made 56 appearances and scored 8 goals. His contributions helped the club secure another Argentine Primera División title in the 2018-19 season.
2.10. Banfield (Third Stint)
Cvitanich made his final return to his childhood club, Banfield, in 2022. He played four matches and scored one goal in this last period of his playing career.
3. International Career and Nationality Controversy
Darío Cvitanich, born in Argentina with distant Croatian heritage, expressed a desire to represent the Croatia national team. He stated that such an opportunity was unique and had to be seized. To facilitate this, he obtained a Croatian passport in August 2008.
However, on 14 January 2009, it was confirmed that he would be unable to play for Croatia due to specific FIFA regulations. FIFA's rules require that at least one of a player's grandparents must have been born in a country for them to be granted "football citizenship" for that nation. In Cvitanich's case, only one of his great-grandparents was born in Croatian territories. The FIFA ruling stated that his Croatian origins were considered too distant to qualify him for the national team.
Zorislav Srebric, the Secretary General of the Croatian Football Federation (HNS), confirmed FIFA's stance, noting that despite Cvitanich holding a Croatian passport, it was not sufficient for FIFA's eligibility criteria. Srebric stated, "We will continue to try to persuade FIFA to make an exception, although we are not very hopeful." Neither his distant ancestry nor his typical Croatian surname was enough to sway FIFA's decision.
4. Personal Life
Darío Cvitanich holds dual citizenship, being a citizen of both Argentina and Croatia. He acquired his Croatian passport in August 2008, a move made in anticipation of potentially representing the Croatian national football team. His Croatian ancestry is tied to the surname Cvitanić, which is historically prevalent on the Croatian island of Brač. He is 69 in (174 cm) tall.
5. Retirement
Darío Cvitanich concluded his professional football career after his third and final stint with Club Atlético Banfield in 2022. Since his retirement, specific details regarding his post-playing career activities are not widely publicized.
