Aleš Kotalík's professional ice hockey journey began in the Czech junior leagues before transitioning to North American professional leagues, primarily the NHL and AHL, and later returning to play in the Czech Republic.
1.1. Youth and junior career
Kotalík started his career in the Czech Republic, playing for HC České Budějovice in the Czech junior league (CZE Jr). During the 1995-96 season, he recorded 6 goals and 7 assists for 13 points in 28 games. The following season, 1996-97, he improved his performance with 15 goals and 16 assists, totaling 31 points in 36 games, along with 24 penalty minutes.
1.2. North American professional career
Kotalík's North American career was primarily defined by his tenure in the National Hockey League (NHL) and the American Hockey League (AHL), where he played for several franchises and experienced various trades and assignments.
1.2.1. NHL Entry Draft and debut
Kotalík was selected by the Buffalo Sabres as the 164th overall pick in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut during the 2001-02 NHL season, appearing in 13 games for the Sabres, where he scored 1 goal and registered 3 assists for 4 points.
1.2.2. Major NHL team activities
With the Buffalo Sabres, Kotalík achieved a career high during the 2005-06 NHL season, recording 25 goals, 37 assists, and 62 points. In the 2006-07 NHL season, he demonstrated strong shootout performance, converting 5 out of 7 attempts and leading the NHL with four shootout-deciding goals. During this season, he was sidelined for 16 games due to a right knee injury. After being traded to the Edmonton Oilers on March 4, 2009, Kotalík finished the remainder of the 2008-09 NHL season with them. He then signed with the New York Rangers on July 9, 2009. His time with the Rangers was marked by a lack of the expected goal-scoring production, leading to him being a healthy scratch for numerous games. Following this, he was traded to the Calgary Flames. He played for the Flames until being traded back to the Sabres in 2011.

On March 4, 2009, the Buffalo Sabres traded Kotalík to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Following his stint with the Oilers, Kotalík signed as a free agent with the New York Rangers on July 9, 2009, agreeing to a three-year contract worth 9.00 M USD. However, his tenure with the Rangers was short-lived. On February 1, 2010, Kotalík was traded by the Rangers to the Calgary Flames along with Chris Higgins in exchange for Olli Jokinen and Brandon Prust.
After being placed on waivers by the Flames during the off-season, Kotalík cleared waivers on June 29, 2010, with two years and 6.00 M USD remaining on his contract. On June 25, 2011, Kotalík was part of a significant trade that sent him, along with Robyn Regehr and a second-round pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, back to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Paul Byron and Chris Butler.

In addition to his NHL career, Aleš Kotalík also played in the American Hockey League (AHL). During the 2001-02 AHL season, he played 68 games for the Rochester Americans, scoring 18 goals and 25 assists for 43 points. He also had a brief stint with the Americans in the 2002-03 AHL season. Later in his career, during the 2010-11 AHL season, Kotalík was assigned to the Abbotsford Heat after being placed on waivers by the Calgary Flames on January 27, 2011. He joined HC Mountfield České Budějovice in the Czech Extraliga for the 2011-12 Czech Extraliga season. He continued to play in the Czech league, including for ČEZ Motor České Budějovice in the 2012-13 Czech Extraliga season and the 2013-14 Czech 1. Liga season.
2. International play
Aleš Kotalík proudly represented the Czech Republic in various international ice hockey competitions, making his debut for the national team in 2000. He played a total of 21 games for the Czech national team throughout his career.
