2. Early Life and Background
Travis Fulton's early life was marked by challenges and a foundational introduction to combat sports that would significantly shape his future career.
2.1. Childhood and Education
Born on May 29, 1977, in Waterloo, Iowa, Travis Fulton was raised in Cedar Falls, Iowa. His family experienced deep poverty after his father was laid off from the John Deere company. During his school years, Fulton faced severe bullying, which at one point led him to contemplate a plan to kill both his tormentors and himself. Despite these struggles, he found popularity through success in various sports. He began wrestling in elementary school, following in his older brother's footsteps. Fulton was also a skilled baseball player and continued wrestling at Cedar Falls High School, where he was a state competitor, though he was occasionally removed from the team for skipping classes. Outside of school sports, he also became a Golden Gloves boxer and achieved a second-degree black belt in American Kenpo.
2.2. Early Training and Professional Debut
Fulton developed a passion for mixed martial arts after watching UFC 3 on pay-per-view. At the age of 18, he began training in submission fighting. He later trained with Miletich Fighting Systems, a renowned camp led by fellow Iowa native and legendary coach Pat Miletich. His professional mixed martial arts debut took place on July 26, 1996, when he was 19 years old. He faced Dave Strasser at an event titled "Gladiators", where he suffered a submission loss via a rear-naked choke.

He returned for UFC 21, defeating David Dodd by unanimous decision, which marked his final appearance in the UFC. Fulton was scheduled to fight Scott Adams at UFC 23 but withdrew due to a broken hand just six days before the event. In 2008, he was selected to appear on The Ultimate Fighter reality series but was unable to make the required weight for filming.
Throughout his career, Fulton faced many up-and-coming fighters who would later become top-level UFC competitors. From 2001 to 2005, despite maintaining a winning record, he experienced losses to notable opponents such as Andrei Arlovski, Renato Sobral, Ricco Rodriguez, Evan Tanner, Dan Severn, Rich Franklin, Forrest Griffin, Ian Freeman, Jeremy Horn, Branden Lee Hinkle, and Ben Rothwell.
He thrived in various organizations, winning three world titles with the IFC and also securing three tournament victories within the organization. His only IFC losses were to Matt Lindland (by choke, though Fulton initially submitted Lindland but agreed to continue the match) and Vladimir Matyushenko (by neck crank). Fulton participated in the main event of WEC's inaugural event in June 2001, losing a decision to UFC Hall of Famer Dan Severn. In May 2007, he took a fight on short notice against IFL Heavyweight Champion Ben Rothwell at IFL Chicago, providing Rothwell his toughest challenge in the organization before losing via kimura in the second round. In November 2011, Fulton faced former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei Arlovski at ProElite 2 in the co-main event, losing by head kick knockout with just one second remaining in the third round. 5.1. Federal Child Pornography Charges
On February 17, 2021, Travis Fulton was charged by a federal grand jury with possession of child pornography and the sexual exploitation of a child. According to the charging documents, Fulton was alleged to have attempted to induce a minor under the age of 18 to engage in sexually explicit conduct for the purpose of producing visual depictions. He was also accused of receiving and attempting to receive child pornography through "interstate and foreign commerce," specifically via a USB drive transported across state lines between November 2018 and November 2020. Fulton made his initial court appearance on February 19, 2021, before the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa in Cedar Rapids, where he pleaded not guilty to one count of sexual exploitation of a child, one count of possession of child pornography, and one count of receipt of child pornography. Court documents filed on July 2, 2021, indicated that he had agreed to plead guilty to two of the four charges against him. A federal judge subsequently canceled the scheduled hearing and set a plea change hearing for July 23. Additionally, Fulton was also facing charges from an unrelated incident on September 5, 2019, for assaulting a woman, with that trial awaiting commencement in September 2021.
