2.1. Birth and Education
Tomoaki Matsukawa was born on April 18, 1973, in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. For his formative years in football and education, he attended Toin Gakuen High School from 1989 to 1991. During his time at Toin Gakuen, he played alongside notable teammates such as Keisuke Kurihara and Kentaro Hayashi, while Yasushi Fukunaga was a year his senior, and Kenichiro Tokura and Shigeru Hasebe were two years his senior. Under the guidance of coach Kuniaki Ri, Matsukawa's team participated in the National High School Soccer Championship during his first year. They advanced to the quarterfinals, where they were ultimately defeated by Maebashi Commercial High School in a penalty shootout. Following his high school graduation, Matsukawa continued his academic and football pursuits at Komazawa University from 1992 to 1995. He stands at 68 in (172 cm) tall and weighs 132 lb (60 kg).

Tomoaki Matsukawa's professional football career began after his university studies, leading him through various clubs in Japan's top and second-tier leagues, as well as the Japan Football League.
3.1. Professional Debut with Shonan Bellmare
After graduating from Komazawa University, Matsukawa embarked on his professional career in 1996, joining J1 League club Bellmare Hiratsuka. From 1997 onwards, he became a regular presence in the team, playing many matches each season as a central midfielder. His initial tenure with the club concluded in the 1999 season when Bellmare Hiratsuka finished at the bottom of the league table and was subsequently relegated to the J2 League.
3.2. Career with Major Clubs
Following his time with Bellmare Hiratsuka, Matsukawa moved to Kyoto Purple Sanga in 2000. During this period, he found it challenging to secure regular playing time, and the club was also relegated to the J2 League. However, in 2001, Matsukawa played a significant number of matches, contributing to Kyoto Purple Sanga's championship victory in the J2 League, which saw them return to the J1 League after just one year. Despite the promotion, his playing opportunities became limited again in 2002.
In August 2002, Matsukawa made a mid-season loan move to Consadole Sapporo. His time there was brief, and he could hardly play in matches. Consadole Sapporo also faced relegation to the J2 League at the end of the 2002 season. In 2003, Matsukawa joined Japan Football League club YKK. He concluded his professional football career at the end of the 2003 season, retiring from the sport.
