Sunao Yoshida was born Sunao Matsumoto on October 24, 1969, in Ashiyamachi, Onga District, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. He spent his early life and received his schooling in Kagoshima Prefecture, attending La Salle Junior and Senior High School there.

Sunao Yoshida made his literary debut in 1997. His debut novel, Genocide Angel: Treason of the Gods (ジェノサイド・エンジェル 叛逆の神々Japanese), earned him the prestigious 2nd Sneaker Taisho literary prize. This marked his official entry into the Japanese publishing world, specifically within the light novel category.

Yoshida is most widely known for his Trinity Blood series. This series was serialized in Kadokawa Shoten's bi-monthly magazine, The Sneaker. The serialization of Trinity Blood proceeded under strict conditions, with the understanding that it would be immediately canceled if its popularity declined. Despite these challenging terms, the series gained significant traction. Its popularity was such that The Sneaker's overall readership and sales reportedly dropped notably after Yoshida's death. The Trinity Blood series was also published in North America by Tokyopop. Beyond his novel series, Yoshida was also involved as a world designer for the Neppu Kairiku Bushi Road project. This project faced indefinite delays following his death but was eventually taken over by Kinema Citrus and Orange and completed in 2013.

3. Death
Sunao Yoshida died suddenly at the age of 34 on July 15, 2004. He had collapsed on July 14 due to an acute pulmonary embolism, also referred to as a lung blockage or pulmonary infarction, and passed away at approximately 1:49 PM on the following day after being transferred to a hospital.
4. Posthumous Legacy and Impact
Following his death, Sunao Yoshida's work and contributions were commemorated through various initiatives, ensuring his impact on the light novel community continued.
From July 1 to October 1, 2006, two years after his passing, a memorial event titled "Sunao Exhibit" was held in his hometown of Ashiyamachi, Fukuoka. This exhibition, aimed at preserving his achievements for future generations, was organized in collaboration with publishers Kadokawa Shoten, Gonzo, and Broccoli. Further honoring his legacy, the "Yoshida Naoki Bunko" (Yoshida Sunao Archive) was established and opened to the public on June 26, 2010. Located within the Ashiya Town Library, this archive houses a collection of his works and personal belongings, which were donated by his family. Additionally, a project Yoshida had participated in as a world designer, Neppu Kairiku Bushi Road, was eventually adapted into an anime in 2013, almost a decade after his death.
