1. Overview
Pietro Accardi's career spans over a decade as a professional footballer before his transition into football administration. He played as a defender for several prominent Italian clubs, including Palermo and Sampdoria, achieving promotion to Serie A with Palermo. Following his playing retirement, Accardi moved into a management role at Empoli, eventually becoming their sporting director, a position he now holds at Sampdoria, aiming to guide the club back to top-flight football.
2. Playing Career
Pietro Accardi's playing career saw him develop through youth ranks before making his senior debut and eventually playing for multiple Italian clubs in both Serie A and Serie B.
2.1. Early Career
Born in Palermo, Sicily, Pietro Accardi began his football journey in the youth system of Palermo from 1989 to 1999. In 1999, while still associated with Palermo's youth setup, he made his senior debut for Marsala in Serie C1 during a loan spell from 1999 to 2000, where he made 14 appearances and scored one goal.
2.2. Palermo
Accardi formally joined Palermo in 2000, spending two seasons with their youth teams. Following the club's acquisition by Maurizio Zamparini in 2002, and despite an influx of new players, Accardi established himself in the starting line-up for the 2002-03 Serie B season. He played a crucial role in the team that achieved promotion to Serie A in 2004. During his time at Palermo, Accardi received multiple call-ups to the Italy U21 Serie B representative team for training sessions between 2002 and 2004, though an injury prevented him from participating in a match against the Belgium U21 squad. In the 2004-05 Serie A season, he primarily served as an understudy to Fabio Grosso. Overall, Accardi made 70 appearances and scored one goal for Palermo before his departure in 2006.
2.3. Sampdoria
In the 2006-07 Serie A season, Palermo transferred Accardi to Sampdoria for 2.00 M EUR. This move was part of a larger exchange that also involved Massimo Bonanni and Christian Terlizzi moving to Sampdoria, while Sampdoria's Aimo Diana and Marco Pisano joined Palermo. Upon his arrival at the Genoa-based club, Accardi immediately secured a spot in the starting eleven. However, he sustained an injury during the 2007-08 UEFA Cup 2nd qualifying round, which sidelined him until November of that year. By the 2009-10 Serie A season, he lost his regular starting position to Reto Ziegler. Nevertheless, after Sampdoria's relegation to Serie B and Ziegler's subsequent departure, Accardi regained his starting place. He spent six years with Sampdoria, making 96 appearances and scoring one goal.
2.4. Loans and Later Career
After his tenure at Sampdoria, Accardi was loaned to Brescia Calcio in January 2011, where he played 8 matches and scored 1 goal. He then briefly joined Brescia officially in 2012, making one appearance, before moving to Empoli on 22 September 2012, signing a contract until the summer of 2013. He concluded his professional playing career at Empoli, where he made 18 appearances. His career spanned from 1999 to 2014, with a total of 207 appearances and 3 goals.

He remained with the Tuscanian club for a total of ten years in various capacities.
