1. Early life and background
Muriel Gustavo Becker's early life was marked by his birth in southern Brazil and his foundational development in football within one of the country's most renowned academies.
1.1. Personal background
Muriel was born on 14 February 1987, in Novo Hamburgo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. He also holds German nationality. His younger brother, Alisson Becker, is also a professional goalkeeper who plays for Premier League club Liverpool and the Brazil national team. The brothers share a close bond and a professional connection, having been teammates during their time at Sport Club Internacional.
1.2. Youth career
Muriel began his football journey in the youth academy of Sport Club Internacional, a prominent club in his home state of Rio Grande do Sul. He spent his formative years at the club from 2003 to 2006, developing the fundamental skills and techniques that would later define his professional career as a goalkeeper. His time in Internacional's youth system provided him with a strong foundation before his transition to senior professional football.

2. Club career
Muriel's professional club career has seen him play for several clubs across Brazil and Portugal, establishing himself as a reliable goalkeeper.
2.1. Internacional
Muriel commenced his professional career at Sport Club Internacional, where he had spent his youth. During his tenure at Internacional, he was loaned out on multiple occasions to gain more first-team experience. In 2009, he had loan spells with Caxias and Portuguesa. He returned to Internacional and, in 2010, won the 2010 Copa FGF with the Internacional B team. A second loan spell at Portuguesa in May 2011, this time a Série B club, was rescinded shortly after. In July 2016, he was loaned to another second-tier team, Bahia.
2.2. Belenenses / Belenenses SAD
On 13 June 2017, Muriel made his first move abroad, signing a two-year deal with C.F. Os Belenenses in the Portuguese Primeira Liga. He made his debut sixteen days later in the first round of the Taça da Liga, in a 1-0 home loss to Real SC. However, this result was later revoked in Belenenses' favour as Real SC had fielded a suspended player, Abou Touré. His first league game, on 7 August, also ended in a 1-0 defeat away to Rio Ave F.C..
In his second season in Belém, Lisbon, the team underwent a significant change, spinning off as Belenenses SAD. Muriel remained a crucial player, featuring in the first 32 league matches. A notable performance during this period was a 2-0 home victory over eventual champions S.L. Benfica on 27 October 2018, a match Muriel himself described as being among his top three career games. His final appearance for the club, on 5 May 2019, was less fortunate. In an 8-1 loss to city rivals Sporting CP, Muriel gifted the opening goal by passing the ball to Raphinha, and was subsequently sent off in the 21st minute for fouling the same player.
2.3. Fluminense
On 5 July 2019, Muriel returned to Brazil's top flight, signing a three-and-a-half-year deal with Fluminense. He debuted for the club on 24 July in the first leg of the 2019 Copa Sudamericana round of 16, a 2-1 away win against Peñarol. Four days later, in his first Série A match for Fluminense, he made an error leading to a goal in a 2-1 home loss to São Paulo at the Maracanã Stadium. In his debut Campeonato Carioca season, Becker reached the final with Fluminense, ultimately losing 3-1 on aggregate to rivals Flamengo in July 2020.
2.4. Later career
Following his departure from Fluminense, Muriel continued his career abroad. He joined Cypriot club AEL Limassol in 2022, playing 35 matches for them before moving to his current club, Esporte Clube Vitória, in 2024, competing in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B.
3. Style of play
Muriel is recognized for his distinctive style of play as a goalkeeper. He is particularly noted for his exceptional speed and precise timing when deciding to rush off his goal line. This aggressive approach allows him to quickly close down opposing attackers, cut off angles, and intercept through balls, often thwarting scoring opportunities before they fully develop. His ability to anticipate play and cover ground quickly is a key strength in his goalkeeping repertoire.
4. Personal life
Muriel Gustavo Becker is the elder brother of Alisson Becker, who is also a professional goalkeeper and currently plays for Liverpool and the Brazil national team. The two brothers were teammates at Sport Club Internacional early in their careers. Their shared profession and close family ties are a well-known aspect of their public lives.
