1. Early life
Luis Javier Suárez Charris was born on 2 December 1997, in Santa Marta, Colombia.
2. Club career
Suárez's club career began in Colombia before he moved to Spain, where he spent significant time on loan spells and permanent transfers, developing his skills across various divisions. Later, he also played in France before returning to Spanish football.
2.1. Early career and initial loans
Suárez made his senior debut with Leones on 5 October 2015, coming on as a second-half substitute in a 1 3 away loss against América de Cali in the Categoría Primera B. After making eight first-team appearances for Leones, he was loaned to Granada CF on 1 March 2016, with a buyout clause, and was assigned to their reserve team, Granada CF B, in Segunda División B. During the 2016-17 season, he made 35 appearances for Granada B, scoring 5 goals.
On 17 July 2017, after his federative rights were assigned to Watford in England, Suárez was loaned to Real Valladolid B in the third division for a year. He performed well, scoring 11 goals in 34 appearances. The following year, on 9 July 2018, he joined Segunda División side Gimnàstic de Tarragona on another temporary deal. He made his professional debut with Gimnàstic on 20 August 2018, replacing Tete Morente late in a 1 1 home draw against Tenerife. His first goal for the club came on 7 October, an equalizer in a 1 1 draw at Cádiz. During his time at Gimnàstic, Suárez played in 36 league matches and scored 7 goals, adding 1 appearance in the National Cup.
2.2. Loan spell at Real Zaragoza
On 21 June 2019, Suárez was loaned to Real Zaragoza, remaining in the Spanish second division. This loan spell was particularly impactful, as he ended the regular season as the team's top goalscorer with 19 goals from 38 appearances. However, he was unable to participate in the 2020 Segunda División play-offs because his loan agreement with Watford ended before the playoffs commenced, causing significant frustration for Real Zaragoza. He also made 1 appearance in the National Cup for Zaragoza.
2.3. Permanent move to Granada CF
On 2 October 2020, Suárez returned to Granada CF on a permanent transfer from Watford, signing a five-year contract. The transfer fee was approximately 10.00 M GBP. During his time at Granada, Suárez became a key player. In the 2020-21 season, he made 27 appearances and scored 5 goals in La Liga, while also featuring in 8 UEFA Europa League matches where he scored 2 goals. He also made 2 appearances in the National Cup. In the 2021-22 season, he played in 37 La Liga matches, scoring 8 goals, and made 1 appearance in the National Cup. In total, he made 64 league appearances for Granada, scoring 13 goals, and contributed in other competitions before his departure.
2.4. Transfers to Olympique Marseille and UD Almería
On 18 July 2022, Marseille in France announced Suárez's transfer to the club. He made his debut on 7 August 2022, coming on as a substitute in the 62nd minute against Stade de Reims and scoring two goals. During his short tenure at Marseille, he made 7 appearances in Ligue 1, scoring 3 goals, and also played in 4 UEFA Champions League matches.
However, on 5 December 2022, Suárez returned to Spanish football, agreeing to a loan deal with Almería in La Liga. The agreement included an obligatory buyout clause of 8.00 M EUR if Almería managed to avoid relegation. Initially on loan, he later joined Almería permanently. On 1 October 2023, Suárez scored a hat-trick against his former club, Granada CF, in a 3 3 draw, with all three goals assisted by Largie Ramazani. By February 2025, he had played 20 league matches and scored 4 goals for Almería during the 2022-23 season, and subsequently 39 league matches with 24 goals across the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons, alongside 2 National Cup appearances with 4 goals.
