Koji Kumagai was born on October 23, 1975, in Towada City, Aomori Prefecture, Japan. His early education included attending Towada Municipal Minami Elementary School and Towada Municipal Sanbongi Junior High School. He stands 70 in (177 cm) tall and weighs 150 lb (68 kg).
1.2. High school career
Kumagai attended Aomori Prefectural Sanbongi Agricultural High School. During his three years there, the school did not qualify for the National High School Soccer Championship. Despite this, he quickly gained recognition as a talented youth player, which led to his selection for the national youth team.
2. Playing career
Koji Kumagai's playing career spanned over a decade, primarily with Kashima Antlers and Vegalta Sendai, where he established himself as a versatile and impactful midfielder.
2.1. Club career
Kumagai joined Kashima Antlers in 1994 after graduating from high school. While his playing time was limited in the early years, he became a regular fixture as a defensive midfielder in 2000. That year, Kashima Antlers achieved a historic milestone by winning all three major domestic titles: the 2000 J1 League, the J.League Cup, and the Emperor's Cup, marking the first time a club had achieved this "triple crown" in J1 League history. Kumagai was a key member of this championship-winning squad, recognized for his extensive stamina and ability to play various roles, earning him the reputation of a utility player (ユーティリティプレイヤーyūtiriti purēyāJapanese). He continued to contribute to Kashima Antlers' success, winning the 2001 J1 League and the 2002 J.League Cup. He made a total of 116 appearances and scored 10 goals for Kashima Antlers as a defensive midfielder.
In July 2004, after a season with limited appearances, he transferred to Vegalta Sendai. At Vegalta Sendai, he was named captain in 2005. However, a series of persistent injuries plagued his time with the club, leading to his retirement at the end of the 2005 season. He played 40 matches for Vegalta Sendai.
2.2. National team career
In April 1995, Kumagai was selected for the Japan U-20 national team to participate in the 1995 FIFA World Youth Championship. He played every minute of all four matches as a defensive midfielder, demonstrating his reliability and skill on the international stage.
