1. Early Life and Education
Jin Seon-kyu's journey into the performing arts began from humble beginnings in Jinhae-gu, South Gyeongsang Province, South Korea, where he was born on September 13, 1977.
1.1. Childhood and Early Influences
During his childhood, Jin Seon-kyu attended Jinhae Middle School and Jinhae High School. He was an active youth, engaging in various sports such as weightlifting, taekwondo, and Hapkido. Despite his athletic pursuits, he described himself as having a timid personality, which gradually transformed as he became more vibrant through exercise. A pivotal moment occurred in 1996, during his final year of high school, when he visited a small theater company in Jinhae with a friend. Observing the cast's dedication during practice, he instantly developed a deep passion for acting. This experience resonated with him as he realized that, while others often laughed and spoke freely, he had always been somewhat reserved. The idea of portraying different characters on stage, allowing him to momentarily shed his shyness and fully immerse himself in a carefree atmosphere, brought him immense joy and a longing to pursue this path.
1.2. Korea National University of Arts
Driven by his newfound passion, Jin Seon-kyu informed his family during his senior year's summer vacation of his intention to pursue acting at the Korea National University of Arts. His decision was met with some skepticism; certain family members suggested he consider a career as a comedian, believing that an actor needed a conventionally good-looking face. His father, in particular, discouraged him from pursuing a career in acting due to the family's financial difficulties, hoping he would choose a more stable profession as the eldest son. However, Jin Seon-kyu persisted, citing that the Korea National University of Arts had lower tuition fees compared to other institutions. His mother, supportive of his aspirations, secretly borrowed 1.20 M KRW to cover his entrance fee, allowing him to enroll. His father only learned of his enrollment when Jin presented his acceptance letter after the summer vacation. He then moved to Seoul to join the third cohort of the acting department at the university, where he diligently built his foundational acting skills. During his time there, he participated in various academic activities, including a graduation performance of a musical by acclaimed director Jang Yu-jeong.
2. Career
Jin Seon-kyu's career spans over two decades, evolving from a dedicated stage actor to a versatile and widely recognized figure in Korean cinema and television.
2.1. Early Stage Career
Jin Seon-kyu officially debuted as a theater actor in 2000. He was one of the three founding members of the theater company 'Ganda' (簡多), alongside Park Bo-kyung and Kim Ji-hyun. The company, initially named Performance Delivery Service Ganda, was established by Min Jun-ho to secure support funds and participate in festivals for theatrical productions, particularly for his work The Mirror Princess Pyeonggang Story. The second group of members who joined 'Ganda' included notable actors such as Kim Min-jae, Lee Hee-joon, Jeong Seon-ah, Park Min-jung, Jeong Yeon, Woo Ji-soon, and director Lee Jae-jun. Jin Seon-kyu's official debut play was The Mirror Princess Pyeonggang Story in 2004, marking the beginning of his extensive work in both plays and musicals.
2.2. Film and Television Breakthrough
Jin Seon-kyu made his television debut in 2010 with the MBC drama Road No. 1, directed by Kim Jin-min. He continued to appear in several dramas, including God of War (2012) and Pride and Prejudice (2014), both also directed by Kim Jin-min, as well as Three Days (2014). He later confirmed his appearance in One the Woman, a sequel to the MBC weekend drama The Rosy Lovers.
His career reached a significant turning point in 2017 with his role as Wen Sung-rok, a member of a Chinese-Korean crime faction from Yanbian, China, in Kang Yun-seong's film The Outlaws. His compelling portrayal earned him the Best Supporting Actor award at the 38th Blue Dragon Film Awards, a unanimous decision by the judges, effectively launching him into wider stardom within the film industry. Following this breakthrough, he became known for his ability to portray complex characters, including villains, which showcased his extensive acting range.
In 2019, Jin Seon-kyu further solidified his status as a prominent actor with his role as Detective Ma Bong-pal in the comedy film Extreme Job. This film became his first "10 million viewer" film, a significant milestone in the South Korean film industry, demonstrating his widespread appeal and box office drawing power. He has taken on various challenging roles, such as the sub-villain Kwak Byeong-doo in The Villagers (2018), the main villain and a "fake final boss" Jo Gwang-chun in Long Live the King: Mokpo Hero (2019), and the main male protagonist Park Si-heon in Count (2023). He also appeared as Jang Myeong-jun, the North Korean head of a global criminal organization and the main villain in Confidential Assignment 2: International (2022). In the Netflix film Space Sweepers (2021), he took on the role of Tiger Park, a sub-protagonist.
