1. Conception and Creation
The fundamental idea for Shinichi Kudo's transformation into a child originated from Gosho Aoyama's concept of a tortoiseshell cat Sherlock Holmes that would subtly indicate crucial evidence in a case. This idea evolved into the shrunken Shinichi assisting in investigations. Shinichi's name was inspired by the fictional private eye Shunsaku Kudo from the Japanese television drama Tantei Monogatari and the author's favored name "Shinichi" from the writer Shinichi Hoshi.
Aoyama initially considered naming the character "Doyle" but ultimately settled on "Conan," believing it would surpass the recognition of the anime series Future Boy Conan. The name "Conan Edogawa" itself is a combination of Arthur Conan Doyle and Edogawa Ranpo, prominent mystery writers. Shinichi's distinctive hair, particularly the cowlick, was influenced by characters from Aoyama's earlier work Yaiba and by Kabu from Sally the Witch. Conan's iconic glasses were based on Clark Kent and were a crucial element discussed within the series with Ai Haibara in volume 24 of the manga. Shinichi's catchphrase, 真実はいつもひとつ!Shinjitsu wa Itsumo Hitotsu!Japanese, meaning "There is always only one truth!", was conceived by the anime adaptation's scriptwriter and simultaneously incorporated into chapter 95 of the manga. In English localizations, this phrase is often translated as "One Truth Prevails".
2. Life and Background
Shinichi Kudo's life underwent a dramatic transformation following his encounter with a mysterious criminal organization.
2.1. Early Life as Shinichi Kudo
Born on May 4th, Shinichi Kudo is the only child of Yusaku Kudo, a world-renowned mystery novelist, and Yukiko Kudo, a former famous film actress. His parents moved to the United States when he was 14, leaving him to live alone in their house at 2-21 Beika City, Beika District, Tokyo, an address inspired by Baker Street 221B, the famous residence of Sherlock Holmes. From a young age, Shinichi exhibited exceptional intuition and genius-level intellect, with his father frequently crafting puzzles and games to sharpen his thinking abilities. This upbringing fostered his profound love for mystery novels, leading him to read the entire collection at his elementary school library. Yusaku also often took Shinichi to crime scenes starting from when he was in the 6th grade, which ignited Shinichi's passion for investigating criminal cases. Consequently, friends like Ran Mouri and Sonoko Suzuki sometimes referred to him as a "mystery fanatic."
As a 17-year-old student at Teitan High School, Shinichi had already gained nationwide fame as a brilliant young detective, earning epithets such as "the savior of the police force" and "Sherlock Holmes of the Heisei era." He was a key midfielder on his high school's soccer team, possessing skills comparable to a national-level player. However, he left the team in his first year of high school, stating that he only pursued soccer to sharpen his reflexes, much like his idol Sherlock Holmes practiced archery, to enhance his detective abilities. Despite his exceptional intellect, Shinichi is known to be tone-deaf, finding music classes challenging, though he possesses absolute pitch and can read musical notes. He is fluent in English, capable of conversing normally with native speakers, and has shown proficiency in Russian, which improved over time, though he struggles with Italian and the Kansai dialect. His height as Shinichi is 69 in (174 cm).
2.2. The Incident and Transformation
The pivotal event that altered Shinichi's life occurred when he took his childhood friend, Ran Mouri, to Tropical Land to celebrate her victory in the Metropolitan Karate Championship. After solving a murder case on the "Mystery Coaster" ride, Shinichi's keen observation skills led him to witness a suspicious transaction between an unknown individual and two men in black, later identified as Gin and Vodka, near the amusement park. Leaving Ran, Shinichi discreetly approached the scene to eavesdrop on their conversation, which involved an extortion of 100.00 M JPY. However, he failed to notice another man in black, Gin, sneaking up behind him. Gin struck Shinichi's head with an iron pipe and then forced him to ingest an experimental poison, APTX4869 (Apotoxin 4869), which was designed to kill people without leaving any trace of the victim's existence.
The syndicate members left Shinichi for dead. However, instead of killing him, a rare side effect of the undeveloped drug caused his body to slowly and painfully regress, shrinking him into the form of a 6- or 7-year-old child. Distraught and confused, Shinichi sought help from his eccentric neighbor and family friend, Professor Hiroshi Agasa. Professor Agasa advised Shinichi to keep his true identity a secret, as revealing it to the Black Organization would endanger both him and everyone close to him. Shinichi agreed, fearing for the safety of Ran and his loved ones.
2.3. Life as Conan Edogawa
To maintain his disguise and gather information on the Black Organization, Shinichi adopted the alias Conan Edogawa, a name derived from Arthur Conan Doyle and Edogawa Ranpo. Professor Agasa presented him to Ran as a distant relative whose parents were involved in an accident abroad and arranged for Conan to live with Ran and her father, the private detective Kogoro Mouri. Shinichi and Professor Agasa hoped that living within a detective agency would allow Conan to encounter cases that might offer clues about the Black Organization. As Kogoro is often incompetent, Conan secretly solves cases by tranquilizing Kogoro with a wrist-watch stun-gun and then impersonating Kogoro's voice using his voice-changing bowtie, thus making Kogoro famous as "Sleeping Kogoro." Conan also uses other gadgets invented by Professor Agasa, such as tracking glasses, power-assisted kick shoes, a solar-powered skateboard, a soccer ball dispenser belt, and super strong/elastic suspenders.
As Conan, Shinichi attends Teitan Elementary School, where he forms the Detective Boys (少年探偵団Shōnen Tantei-danJapanese) with his classmates Ayumi Yoshida, Genta Kojima, and Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya. He discovers that these children, despite their age, are clever and often assist him in solving difficult cases. Conan maintains a constant effort to convince Ran that Shinichi is away solving a challenging case.
He eventually befriends Ai Haibara (灰原哀Haibara AiJapanese), whose real name is Shiho Miyano, a former Black Organization member and the brilliant biochemist who developed APTX4869. After her sister was murdered by Gin, Shiho ingested the poison to commit suicide, but like Shinichi, she also regressed to a child's size. Professor Agasa takes her in, and she becomes Conan's invaluable partner, continuing her research on an APTX4869 antidote. She develops a prototype antidote that allows Conan to temporarily revert to Shinichi for up to 24 hours (or 12 hours with continuous use), though repeated use develops immunity and shortens its effect. Conan occasionally uses this antidote to maintain his Shinichi identity, especially when Ran grows suspicious. During the "Holmes' Revelation" arc in London, Shinichi, in his original form, confesses his feelings to Ran, and during the "The Scarlet School Trip" arc in Kyoto, Ran reciprocates with a kiss on his cheek, officially initiating their romantic relationship.
Conan's investigation into the Black Organization leads him to collaborate with members of the FBI, including Jodie Starling, Shuichi Akai, and James Black, and the CIA, specifically Rena Mizunashi, who is revealed to be an undercover agent. They work together to dismantle the Black Organization, whose head, known as "that person" or "boss," is later identified as Renya Karasuma, a fact currently unknown to the FBI and Conan. Conan idolizes soccer players Hide and Ray Curtis, reflecting his own passion for the sport.

3. Personality and Beliefs
3.1. Character Traits
Shinichi Kudo, in both his original and shrunken forms, generally possesses a warm, compassionate, and considerate personality. He is highly intelligent and displays a strong sense of justice, consistently striving to protect others, especially Ran, Ai, and the Detective Boys. He is deeply dedicated to his goals and shows remarkable resilience, never giving up even when faced with extreme danger. For example, in Detective Conan: Baker Street's Nightmare, he actively encourages the children scared by the life-or-death game and lends his jacket to Ayumi when she is cold. He frequently takes on risks alone to shield his friends and allies from harm, as seen when dealing with the Black Organization.
Despite his serious demeanor, Shinichi can be somewhat narcissistic, occasionally boasting about his superior intellect and deductive prowess. He also has a tendency to be insensitive to those he is close to, such as making harsh comments about Genta's inability to calculate or teasing Ai about her musical preferences. While generally calm and rational, he can become flustered by unexpected situations or when his identity is almost exposed, sometimes acting suspiciously. His strong curiosity can also lead him into perilous situations or cause him to make rash decisions. He has a notable naive side when it comes to Ran's romantic feelings for him, often remaining oblivious despite clear signs.
As Conan, he effectively serves as the de facto leader of the Detective Boys, providing precise instructions and mediating disputes among the members. He harbors a deep, almost instinctual, fear of Ran's mother, Eri Kisaki, stemming from childhood experiences.
3.2. Stance on Crime and Justice
Shinichi Kudo holds a strong moral compass concerning crime and justice. He is unwavering in his commitment to bring criminals to light and ensure justice is served. A defining principle, solidified after his failure to prevent the murderer's suicide in the "Moonlight Sonata Murder Case," is his resolve to never let a criminal die. This commitment means he will often go to great lengths, even in dangerous situations, to rescue a culprit from death or prevent their suicide. He believes that driving a criminal to their death through deduction makes a detective no better than a murderer.
He is generally ruthless towards criminals who involve innocent parties or attempt to justify their actions, often reacting with physical force or verbal scorn. However, he shows empathy and understanding towards perpetrators driven by tragic circumstances, such as revenge for murdered loved ones, or those acting under extreme duress. In such cases, he may seek to provide them with a reason to live and atone for their crimes, or even advise them to give false testimonies to mitigate their sentences. While unyielding in exposing crimes, even those committed by respected figures, he may sometimes overlook minor infractions or advise against formal charges if the circumstances warrant it.
Despite his strong moral stance, Conan sometimes engages in illegal activities himself, such as underage drinking, wiretapping, theft, or even arson and body disposal when dealing with the Black Organization, rationalizing these actions as necessary for the greater good or to create a diversion.
4. Abilities and Skills
Shinichi Kudo possesses an impressive array of intellectual and practical abilities that remain largely intact despite his physical regression to Conan Edogawa.
4.1. Detective Prowess
Shinichi's intellectual capabilities are extraordinary. He exhibits exceptional deductive reasoning, a keen eye for observation, and an expansive knowledge base spanning various fields, all contributing to his superior problem-solving skills. Even as Conan, his brain and technical prowess remain unchanged, allowing him to unravel numerous intricate cases. His detective skills are so renowned that he is recognized by law enforcement agencies, with even the FBI's James Black expressing a desire to recruit him. While he surpasses other high school detectives like Heiji Hattori and Masumi Sera in overall ability, he acknowledges that he still has much to learn from his father, Yusaku, who often points out his occasional lack of observational depth.
4.2. Investigative Methods
Due to his shrunken form, Conan relies heavily on gadgets invented by Professor Agasa to conduct investigations and present his deductions. His primary tools include the Voice-Changing Bowtie, which allows him to mimic anyone's voice, and the Wristwatch Stun-Gun, used to tranquilize unwitting adults, typically Kogoro Mouri, so Conan can then use the bowtie to voice his deductions through them. Other essential inventions include the Power-Assisted Kick Shoes, which amplify his kicking force; Tracking Glasses, which enable him to track individuals via transmitters; a Solar Powered Skateboard for rapid pursuit (later modified for night use); a Soccer Ball Dispenser Belt; Super Strong/Elastic Suspenders; and an Earpiece-type Cellular Phone (though he now often uses a smartphone).
When interacting with adults who are unaware of his true identity, Conan adopts a childlike persona, using innocent phrases like "Are-re~? Okashii zo~?" (あれれ~? おっかしいぞぉ~?Japanese, "Oh? Something's strange~?") and attributing any advanced knowledge he reveals to "Shinichi nii-chan told me," "Uncle Kogoro told me," or claims he "saw it on TV." He generally tries to avoid suspicion, but his active involvement in cases and confrontations, especially with Kaito Kid, often draws public attention to "Conan Edogawa," the "Kid Killer." In situations where Kogoro is unavailable or unconscious, Conan may impersonate other characters like Sonoko Suzuki, Professor Agasa, or Inspector Yamamura. He also frequently provides subtle hints to individuals like Kogoro or Inspector Megure to guide them toward the solution, or he might teach Ran or Yukiko his deductions so they can present them. In direct confrontations with members of the Black Organization or Kaito Kid, Conan sometimes reveals the truth directly. Conan has also frequently found himself in situations of kidnapping or confinement, often due to his insatiable curiosity about cases.
4.3. Physical and Other Skills
Shinichi's athletic prowess, particularly in soccer, is exceptional. As a junior high school student, he was a regular midfielder with skills strong enough to be scouted by the J.League. Although he ceased playing competitively in high school, he leverages his highly developed reflexes to thwart criminals, often by kicking objects at them with impressive accuracy and force, thanks to his Power-Assisted Kick Shoes. He is ambidextrous, capable of kicking with both feet.
Beyond his physical abilities, Shinichi possesses a wide range of practical talents, many of which he claims to have learned from his father in Hawaii. These include driving various vehicles, piloting different aircraft (from light planes to jumbo jets and helicopters), bomb disposal, marksmanship, and lockpicking. He has also demonstrated proficiency in dog training and the ability to read braille. While generally knowledgeable, he admits to having gaps in his understanding of certain subjects, such as contemporary music, popular video games (at which he is notably unskilled), and baseball terminology.
Regarding his tastes, Shinichi's favorite food is lemon pie, though he also enjoys curry rice and iced Americano. He has a known dislike for raisins and chocolate, though he makes an exception for chocolate prepared by Ran.
5. Relationships
5.1. Relationship with Ran Mouri
Shinichi and Ran Mouri share a profound and evolving relationship that began in their nursery school days, 13 years prior to the main story. Despite his initial shyness and stubbornness in expressing his feelings, their mutual affection gradually developed into a deep romantic bond. Shinichi's heartfelt confession to Ran in London, where he declared her his "favorite woman" and challenged her "Love is Zero" philosophy by asserting that "zero is the beginning of everything," marked a significant turning point. This was later reciprocated by Ran with a kiss on his cheek during their school trip to Kyoto, officially initiating their romantic relationship.
As Conan, Shinichi lives under the same roof as Ran, constantly navigating the complexities of maintaining his secret identity while trying to reassure her about Shinichi's prolonged absence. He frequently calls her using his Voice-Changing Bowtie to mimic Shinichi's voice, though he primarily discusses himself to avoid raising suspicion. Shinichi, despite his detective prowess, is often oblivious to Ran's obvious affection for him, much to the exasperation of others like Heiji Hattori. However, he is remarkably perceptive about other people's romantic entanglements. He also displays an "ubun" (innocent and shy) side towards Ran, such as getting nosebleeds when seeing her unclothed or blushing when she wears a swimsuit. During their elementary school years, Shinichi initially insisted Ran call him "Kudo-kun," but an incident led them to revert to using each other's first names. He had also turned down a confession from a senior, Asami, in junior high due to his feelings for Ran.
5.2. Relationship with Ai Haibara
Conan's relationship with Ai Haibara (Shiho Miyano) is one of crucial partnership and mutual trust. They first encountered each other when Ai transferred to Teitan Elementary School, and she soon revealed to Conan that she was the inventor of APTX4869 and had also shrunken after taking the drug. This shared predicament forms the bedrock of their collaboration.
Ai provides invaluable support to Conan, particularly in scientific matters such as antidote development and supplying critical intelligence about the Black Organization. In return, Conan frequently shows concern and care for Ai, such as lending her his glasses to prevent Black Organization members from discovering her true identity. While their bond is strong and deeply rooted in their shared fight against the Black Organization, their relationship is strictly platonic, devoid of any romantic undertones. They often engage in lighthearted banter, with Ai sometimes teasing Conan about his "ubun" reactions or his eagerness to acquire the antidote.
5.3. Relationship with Kaito Kid
Shinichi Kudo and Kaito Kid (Kaito Kuroba) share a complex dynamic characterized by an ongoing rivalry and occasional, reluctant cooperation. This rivalry is deeply rooted in a historical connection between their fathers: Shinichi's father, Yusaku, was a formidable adversary to the original Kaito Kid, Kaito's father, Toichi Kuroba.
Initially, Shinichi had little interest in Kid, dismissing him as a mere thief. However, after his transformation into Conan and their subsequent encounters, Conan developed a fierce determination to apprehend Kid, leading to numerous confrontations over various treasures. Their battles are often described as a chess match, resulting in an even record of wins and losses. In moments of shared objective, such as the Mystery Train arc where Conan sought Kid's help to protect Ai from the Black Organization, they have temporarily set aside their rivalry to cooperate. Conan's successes against Kid have earned him the public moniker "Kid Killer." Author Gosho Aoyama has stated that he envisions their rivalry akin to that of Sherlock Holmes and Arsène Lupin, aiming for neither to consistently win over the other.
5.4. Relationship with the Detective Boys
Conan's interactions with Ayumi Yoshida, Genta Kojima, and Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya form a significant part of his daily life as a child. He was inadvertently drawn into forming the Detective Boys with them and, despite initially viewing them as just innocent children, has grown to deeply trust and value them as comrades. He often assumes the role of their de facto leader, providing astute instructions and mediating their occasional squabbles.
While he occasionally expresses frustration when they act recklessly or when their youthful antics impede his investigations, Conan has also been profoundly touched by their purity and bravery. Over time, he has grown more comfortable dropping his "child persona" around them, speaking in a more natural, Shinichi-like tone. They often walk to and from school together, and frequently go on outings with Professor Agasa or Ran. Ayumi openly expresses romantic feelings for Conan, sometimes leading to humorous displays of jealousy from Genta and Mitsuhiko.
5.5. Relationship with FBI and CIA
Conan maintains a crucial, though largely secretive, collaborative relationship with key agents from the American FBI and CIA as they collectively work towards dismantling the Black Organization. The FBI agents who are aware of Conan's exceptional abilities, though not his true identity, include James Black, Jodie Starling, and Andre Camel. The CIA's primary contact is Rena Mizunashi, an undercover agent who secretly feeds information from within the organization.
Conan generally adopts a more direct and less overtly childish demeanor with these agents, a testament to his trust in their shared objective. While he doesn't fully reveal his true identity to all of them, some, like Shuichi Akai, have deduced his secret. Conan is subtly aware that Akai knows his identity but maintains the pretense to uphold Akai's cover and the overall secrecy surrounding their operations against the Black Organization.
6. Identity and Awareness
6.1. Characters Who Know His True Identity
Several characters within the Case Closed series have come to know Conan Edogawa's true identity as Shinichi Kudo, with varying degrees of understanding and through different circumstances.
- Professor Hiroshi Agasa: The first to learn of Shinichi's transformation, Conan revealed his identity directly to the Professor to gain his trust and assistance.
- Yusaku Kudo and Yukiko Kudo: Shinichi's parents were informed of his shrunken state by Professor Agasa after they discovered their home was vacant. Yusaku often aids Conan with deductions, while Yukiko assists with disguises.
- Heiji Hattori: The "Great Detective of the West" partially deduced Conan's identity through his own keen observations. His suspicions were confirmed when Conan, having been tranquilized to voice a deduction through Kogoro, accidentally had the anesthetic wear off mid-sentence, forcing Conan to explain the situation. They have since become close friends and collaborators.
- Ai Haibara (Shiho Miyano): As the creator of APTX4869 and another victim of its shrinking effects, Ai deduced Shinichi's fate by cross-referencing his name on the drug's experimental subject list. Professor Agasa then further clarified Conan's situation to her.
- Kaito Kid (Kaito Kuroba): The Phantom Thief Kid learned Conan's true identity by wiretapping a conversation between Conan and Professor Agasa. Despite their rivalry, they occasionally exchange information and cooperate.
- Vermouth (Sharon Vineyard): A high-ranking member of the Black Organization, Vermouth independently discovered Conan's identity. However, due to past circumstances where Shinichi saved her life, she has chosen not to reveal this crucial information to the organization.
- Eisuke Hondo: A classmate of Ran's, Eisuke, after much suspicion, managed to trick Conan into revealing his true identity. Conan then reluctantly explained the situation, though he did not fully disclose details about APTX4869 or the Black Organization. Eisuke subsequently moved to the United States.
- Akemi Miyano (deceased): Ai Haibara's older sister was informed of Conan's true identity by him just before she succumbed to a fatal gunshot wound inflicted by Gin.
- Hiroki Sawada (deceased): In Detective Conan: The Phantom of Baker Street, the artificial intelligence "Noah's Ark" learned Conan's identity by accessing his memory data during a virtual game.
- Irish (deceased): A Black Organization member introduced in Detective Conan: The Raven Chaser, Irish deduced Conan's identity by analyzing his fingerprints from a craft project and comparing them to Shinichi's fingerprints on a drama costume. He was killed before he could report this to the organization.
- Pinga (deceased): In Detective Conan: Black Iron Submarine, Pinga, a Black Organization member, discovered Conan's identity through a hacking system. However, he was killed in a submarine explosion orchestrated by Gin before he could reveal it.
- Lupin III, Daisuke Jigen, Fujiko Mine, and Goemon Ishikawa: In the crossover films, Lupin III and Fujiko Mine independently deduced Conan's true identity. Lupin then informed his comrades Jigen and Goemon, who initially expressed skepticism but eventually accepted the truth.
- Alan Smithee (deceased): In Lupin the 3rd vs. Detective Conan: The Movie, Conan revealed his true identity to Alan Smithee just before Smithee died from fatal injuries.
- Shuichi Akai (Subaru Okiya): The FBI agent deduced Conan's identity after witnessing him speak in Shinichi's voice during a phone call to Ran. Akai, now in disguise as Subaru Okiya, works closely with Conan but has not explicitly told Conan he knows, a subtlety Conan himself is aware of.
- Masumi Sera: Ran's detective friend and Akai's sister, Masumi began suspecting Conan's identity after seeing him on a television broadcast from London. Her suspicions solidified after witnessing Conan temporarily revert to Shinichi during a school trip. She now frequently attempts to confirm his identity, though Conan consistently tries to deflect her inquiries.
- Mary Sera (Outside of Territory Sister): Masumi's mother and another victim of APTX4869's shrinking effects, Mary also suspected Conan's identity after seeing him in the London broadcast. Through Masumi's reports and her own observations, including seeing through Kogoro's "Sleeping Kogoro" trick, she has confirmed his identity. She cautions Masumi against trusting Conan, viewing him as different from the Shinichi she met ten years prior.
- Kōnosuke Terai: Kaito Kid's butler, Terai's knowledge of Conan's identity is implied in Case Closed: Sunflowers of Inferno, though the exact circumstances are not detailed.
6.2. Speech and Nicknames
Shinichi Kudo, as Conan Edogawa, employs varying speech patterns depending on who he is interacting with. When maintaining his child persona in front of Ran, Kogoro, or the police, he uses the first-person pronoun "boku" (僕Japanese, I/me) and speaks with a very innocent, childlike tone. However, when alone, in his thoughts, or with those who know his true identity (such as Professor Agasa, his parents, Ai Haibara, Heiji Hattori, Kaito Kid, Vermouth, or members of the Black Organization), he reverts to his original Shinichi speech, using "ore" (オレJapanese, I/me) and a more cool, serious tone. This original tone also surfaces during intense deduction scenes or in critical situations, often creating a noticeable contrast that can sometimes raise suspicion among those unaware of his secret. His common verbal tic is "Bārō" (バーロ一Japanese, a slang contraction of "Bakayarō," meaning "idiot" or "you fool").
Conan is known for several iconic catchphrases. His primary self-introduction is "Edogawa Conan... Detective-sa..." (江戸川コナン...探偵さ...Japanese), sometimes intensified to "Detective-da!!" (江戸川コナン...探偵だ!!Japanese) when confronting criminals. For the feature films and sometimes in the anime's opening narratives, he uses the declaration "Shinjitsu wa itsumo hitotsu!" (真実はいつもひとつ!Japanese, "There is always only one truth!"). The anime's opening also features his famous narration: "The one who reveals the single truth, though his looks are those of a child, his mind is that of an `adult, his name is Detective Conan!" (たったひとつの真実見抜く、見た目は子供、頭脳は大人、その名は名探偵コナン!Japanese).
Conan is referred to by various nicknames by other characters:

7. Appearances in Other Media
7.1. Anime, Films, and OVAs
Shinichi Kudo, primarily as Conan Edogawa, is the central figure in all adaptations of the Case Closed series. He has appeared in every episode of the main anime series, though sometimes his presence is limited to an epilogue cameo or a voice-only role. He is featured in all of the feature films, including major crossovers like Lupin the 3rd vs. Detective Conan and its movie sequel Lupin the 3rd vs. Detective Conan: The Movie. He also plays a central role in all original video animations (OVAs) and television specials, such as Episode One: The Great Detective Turned Small, which re-tells the story of his transformation.
7.2. Live-Action Adaptations
In the various live-action drama series and television specials based on Case Closed, Shinichi Kudo has been portrayed by several actors. Shun Oguri took on the role of the teenage Shinichi in the 2006-2007 live-action series and specials. Later, Junpei Mizobata portrayed him in the 2011 live-action TV drama series and a subsequent movie. The child form of Conan Edogawa was played by Nao Fujisaki, with his voice being dubbed by Minami Takayama, the original Japanese voice actress for Conan in the anime, thereby maintaining continuity and emphasizing the dual identity.
7.3. Video Games and Novels
Shinichi Kudo, in his Conan Edogawa persona, is the protagonist in all Case Closed-related video games. He also takes the central role in the various novels that expand upon the series' universe.
8. Public Reception and Influence
8.1. Popularity and Rankings
Shinichi Kudo and Conan Edogawa have consistently ranked high in popularity polls within the anime and manga community, demonstrating their enduring appeal. In a "friendship" survey conducted by rankingjapan.com, Shinichi ranked third among anime characters people wished to have as friends. Newtype magazine's polls for most popular male anime characters saw Shinichi placing fourth in 2001 and ninth in 2010. He was also voted the tenth most popular male anime character in the 1998 Animage-sponsored Anime Grand Prix awards.
Mania Entertainment recognized Conan as the third greatest anime detective. In a poll on ebooksjapan.jp, Shinichi Kudo and Conan Edogawa were the second and third most popular characters in the series, respectively. Jian DeLeon of Complex magazine included Shinichi Kudo on his list of "The 25 Most Stylish Anime Characters." In a 2017 Charapedia poll, Kudo ranked as the fifth most ideal Prime Minister in anime series. Conan also won the "clever" award in Animedia's "Animedia Character Awards 2019" for standout anime characters chosen by readers. His popularity has even influenced other media, with the Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair protagonist, Hajime Hinata (voiced by Minami Takayama, Conan's voice actress), inspiring a snowboarding minigame due to Kudo's frequent use of his turbo skateboard. In a Japanese poll by AnimeAnime, Kudo was voted the best character voiced by Minami Takayama.
8.2. Cultural and Promotional Impact
The character of Conan Edogawa has transcended the realm of entertainment to exert significant cultural and promotional influence in Japan. In 2006, the Japanese government utilized Conan in national campaigns aimed at raising crime awareness among children, leveraging his image as a young detective to engage the target audience.
Furthermore, Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs featured Conan and his friends in two pamphlets: one to promote the ministry's mission and another to introduce the 34th G8 summit held in the country in 2010. These initiatives demonstrated Conan's widespread recognition and positive association with public safety and international diplomacy. In 2006, Conan and his friends were also honored in the sixth installment of the "Anime, Heroes and Heroines" commemorative stamp series issued by Japan Post. Beyond official endorsements, physical monuments to the character exist, including a bronze statue of Conan Edogawa at the former Yomiuri Telecasting Corporation headquarters and, more prominently, in Hokuei, Tottori, the hometown of creator Gosho Aoyama. This town features a "Conan Bridge" adorned with Conan statues and the "Gosho Aoyama Manga Factory," a museum dedicated to his work, further cementing Conan's status as a cultural icon.
9. Miscellaneous Information
9.1. Background Details
Shinichi Kudo was born on May 4th. As a high school student, his height is 69 in (174 cm). After his transformation into Conan Edogawa, his height shrinks to approximately 37 in (95 cm), and his weight becomes 40 lb (18 kg). His residential address as Shinichi Kudo is 2-21 Beika City, Beika District, Tokyo. His blood type is O, the same as Ran Mouri.
His parents, Yusaku and Yukiko Kudo, moved to the United States when Shinichi was 14 years old. This move influenced his independence and further honed his detective instincts.
9.2. Practical Limitations
A significant practical limitation imposed by Conan's shrunken identity is his inability to obtain a passport under the name "Conan Edogawa." As he technically has no official registry or citizenship under that name, he cannot legally acquire travel documents. This restriction generally confines the settings of his cases to within Japan.
Exceptions to this have occurred in the series: the "NY arc" and the "London arc" saw Shinichi travel abroad, but only when he temporarily reverted to his original teenage form using the APTX4869 antidote. In other instances, such as the film Case Closed: The Fist of Blue Sapphire set in Singapore, Conan travels illegally by being transported in a non-magnetic suitcase by Kaito Kid, who then impersonates Shinichi to facilitate his entry. He has also been taken to fictional locations like the virtual world of 19th-century London in Detective Conan: Baker Street's Nightmare and the fictional Kingdom of Vespania in Lupin the 3rd vs. Detective Conan. The practicalities of Conan attending elementary school without a registered domicile or legal guardian other than Kogoro (who is unaware of his true identity) are largely overlooked in the narrative, though it has been noted by the author that since no one is inconvenienced, it is not a significant issue within the story.
