1. Overview
Riley Vigier (born October 24, 1986), better known by his ring name El Phantasmo (often shortened to ELP), is a Canadian professional wrestler. Originally from Vancouver, he is currently signed with New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) and also competes for Revolution Pro Wrestling (RPW). He holds the NJPW World Television Championship, a title he won at Wrestle Kingdom 19 in January 2025.
Throughout his extensive career, El Phantasmo has achieved significant accomplishments in various promotions. In NJPW, he was a notable member of Bullet Club, where he secured the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship three times with Taiji Ishimori and won the Super J-Cup twice (in 2019 and 2020). His career saw a major shift in 2023 as he transitioned into the heavyweight division, leading to his expulsion from Bullet Club and subsequent alliance with the Guerrillas of Destiny. As part of this new stable, he teamed with Hikuleo, with whom he became a two-time Strong Openweight Tag Team Champion and a one-time IWGP Tag Team Champion, holding both titles simultaneously at one point.
Before his NJPW tenure, El Phantasmo made a name for himself in Revolution Pro Wrestling, winning the British J-Cup in 2018 and holding the RPW British Cruiserweight Championship for 280 days. His early career roots are in Extreme Canadian Championship Wrestling (ECCW), where he was a three-time ECCW Champion, a one-time ECCW Tag Team Champion with Halo, and won the Pacific Cup Tournament in 2009. He was also recognized as the Most Popular Wrestler of the Year and Wrestler of the Year in ECCW in 2008.
In a significant personal development, Vigier was diagnosed with cancer in October 2024 but announced he was cancer-free in December 2024, demonstrating resilience in his personal life. His professional wrestling style is characterized by a blend of high-flying maneuvers, diverse striking, and a controversial use of deceptive tactics, which has often sparked debate and garnered both praise and criticism.
2. Professional wrestling career
El Phantasmo's professional wrestling journey began in 2005, progressing from independent promotions in Canada to major international stages like New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Impact Wrestling, marked by significant title reigns and shifts in his wrestling persona.
2.1. Early Career: Extreme Canadian Championship Wrestling (2005-2017)
Riley Vigier began his professional wrestling training in 2005, training alongside notable wrestlers such as Kyle O'Reilly and Gurv Sihra. He adopted the ring name El Phantasmo, a reference to a song from White Zombie's album Astro-Creep: 2000. His debut match for NWA: Extreme Canadian Championship Wrestling (ECCW) was in a battle royal at Halloween Hell in October 2005.
Early in his career, El Phantasmo formed a tag team with Halo, known as the Masked Dudes of Doom. On March 3, 2007, they became the number one contenders for the NWA/ECCW Tag Team Championship by defeating Models, Inc. in a Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match in Vancouver. After three prior unsuccessful attempts, the Masked Dudes of Doom finally captured the tag team titles in another TLC match against Chill Town on May 5, 2007, in Vancouver. However, their reign was short-lived, as they lost the titles to Greatness on Demand in a six-man tag match on July 27 in Surrey, after only one successful title defense.
El Phantasmo was a regular participant in the ECCW Pacific Cup tournament, reaching the finals in two consecutive years. In 2008, he competed in a three-way final against Billy Suede and Kyle O'Reilly, with Suede ultimately winning the tournament. The following year, in 2009, Phantasmo finally secured the Pacific Cup by defeating Rick The Weapon X and Azeem The Dream in the finals. In 2010, he was eliminated in the semi-finals by eventual tournament winner Artemis Spencer. Despite his sportsmanship in presenting Spencer with the trophy, Phantasmo was met with an unsportsmanlike kick to the groin from his former teammate and rival.
On July 6, 2013, El Phantasmo won his first ECCW Championship. He lost the title to "Ravenous" Randy Myers on January 18, 2014, in a ladder match at Ballroom Brawl 1. His second reign as ECCW Champion began on January 16, 2016, at Ballroom Brawl 5, where he defeated Scotty Mac in a steel cage match. He subsequently lost the championship to Kyle O'Reilly on January 14, 2017, at Ballroom Brawl 7, during an open challenge to any TV wrestler. His final match in ECCW for 2017 took place on May 27, where he was defeated by Andy Bird for the Canadian Championship.
2.2. Revolution Pro Wrestling (2017-present)
El Phantasmo debuted for Revolution Pro Wrestling (RPW) at Cockpit 17 on June 4, 2017, where he was defeated by David Starr. In 2018, he competed in and won the British J-Cup, a significant tournament in the British wrestling scene. On May 19, 2019, he defeated David Starr in a ladder match at RPW's Epic Encounter event to win the RPW British Cruiserweight Championship for the first time. His impressive reign lasted for 280 days before he lost the title to Michael Oku on February 14, 2020. El Phantasmo continues to make appearances for RPW, especially in conjunction with his activities in New Japan Pro-Wrestling.
2.3. New Japan Pro-Wrestling (2019-present)
El Phantasmo's tenure in New Japan Pro-Wrestling has been a pivotal period in his career, marked by his rise in the junior heavyweight division, controversial tactics, a significant transition to heavyweight, and a dramatic shift in allegiances.

2.3.1. Junior Heavyweight Division (2019-2021)
During the first night of the New Japan Cup 2019, a vignette was shown promoting El Phantasmo's debut, announcing him as the newest member of Bullet Club. He made an immediate impact, pinning Will Ospreay in a tag team match on May 4, 2019, at Fukuoka. His first singles victory in NJPW came shortly after against Bandido.
El Phantasmo then participated in the Best of the Super Juniors 26 tournament, where he finished third in his block with 6 wins and 3 losses, accumulating 12 points. On June 16, 2019, Phantasmo and Taiji Ishimori defeated Roppongi 3K (Yoh and Sho) to win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship. Their victory was somewhat contentious, as Phantasmo employed a low blow on Yoh before hitting his finishing move, CR II. They successfully defended their titles against The Birds of Prey (Will Ospreay & Robbie Eagles) on September 16, 2019, in a hard-fought match where Bullet Club's "inside work" proved decisive. However, they lost the titles back to Roppongi 3K at Wrestle Kingdom 14 on January 5, 2020. Earlier in 2019, on July 27, Phantasmo, Yujiro Takahashi, and Chase Owens unsuccessfully challenged for the NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team Championship, losing to Ryusuke Taguchi, Togi Makabe, and Toru Yano. He also defended his RPW British Cruiserweight Championship against Rocky Romero on August 24, 2019, at Southern Showdown.
Phantasmo's prowess in the junior heavyweight division was further highlighted by his two victories in the Super J-Cup tournament. He won the 2019 tournament by defeating Dragon Lee in the finals on August 25, subsequently challenging Will Ospreay for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship. He again won the 2020 Super J-Cup by defeating ACH in the finals on December 12, then immediately challenged Hiromu Takahashi. He lost to Takahashi at Wrestle Kingdom 15 Night 1, preventing him from challenging Ishimori for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship on Night 2.
In his pursuit of the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship, Phantasmo faced Ospreay at King of Pro-Wrestling on October 14, 2019. The match began cleanly but devolved into a dirty fight, with Ishimori interfering before being removed by Eagles. Despite a heated contest, Phantasmo ultimately lost to Ospreay's Hidden Blade and Stormbreaker. He later failed to win the title in a three-way match against Bushi and El Desperado at Castle Attack on February 28, 2021.
Phantasmo and Ishimori regained the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team titles on January 23, 2021, by defeating El Desperado and Yoshinobu Kanemaru, only to lose them back to the same duo a month later. They captured the titles for a third time at Kizuna Road by defeating Roppongi 3K again, a victory marred by controversy as Phantasmo used a superkick suspected of being loaded with a metal slug. They retained against Mega Coaches (Rocky Romero & Ryusuke Taguchi) at Wrestle Grand Slam in Tokyo Dome but lost the titles again to Desperado and Kanemaru at Wrestle Grand Slam in MetLife Dome on September 4, 2021.
In November 2021, Phantasmo competed in the Best of the Super Juniors 28 tournament, finishing with 12 points (6 wins, 5 losses) and failing to advance to the finals. At Wrestle Kingdom 16 on January 5, 2022, Phantasmo and Ishimori, now known as "Bullet Club's Cutest Tag Team," attempted to regain the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship in a three-way match against Mega Coaches and the champions, Flying Tiger (Robbie Eagles & Tiger Mask). During the match, Mega Coaches and Flying Tiger removed Phantasmo's boot, exposing the metal slug he had been using, thus ending his controversial use of the illegal weapon in matches.
2.3.2. Heavyweight Transition and Guerrillas of Destiny (2022-present)
Following the exposure of the metal slug, El Phantasmo continued his tag team efforts with Taiji Ishimori during the NJPW New Years Golden Series tour, but they failed to capture the Junior Heavyweight titles again. Around this time, Phantasmo publicly expressed his interest in competing as a heavyweight wrestler. His promising performances against heavyweight opponents led to his entry into his first heavyweight tournament, the New Japan Cup in 2022. He received a bye to the second round but was defeated by Will Ospreay. Despite this, he still competed in the Best of the Super Juniors 29, finishing with 12 points (6 wins, 3 losses), but a final match loss to El Desperado prevented him from reaching the finals.
At Forbidden Door on June 26, 2022, Phantasmo teamed with former Bullet Club members The Young Bucks to face Dudes with Attitude (Sting, Darby Allin, and Shingo Takagi), where they were defeated. Impressive performances subsequently earned Phantasmo a coveted spot in the heavyweight G1 Climax 32 tournament, where he competed in the D Block. He finished the tournament with 6 points, failing to advance to the semi-finals. After his tournament campaign, Phantasmo officially announced his full transition to the heavyweight division.
Following the G1 Climax, Phantasmo began a heated rivalry with Shingo Takagi, the reigning Provisional KOPW Champion, whom he had defeated in his final G1 Climax match. This feud culminated in a "Who's Your Daddy match" at Declaration of Power on October 10, 2022. Phantasmo lost the match and was forced to publicly declare Takagi his "Daddy," an act he immediately followed by an unsportsmanlike low blow to Takagi and smashing the trophy. A rematch for the Provisional KOPW Championship at Rumble on 44th Street also saw Phantasmo lose to Takagi.
On January 4, 2023, at Wrestle Kingdom 17, Phantasmo participated in the New Japan Ranbo but did not make it to the final four. On February 11, at The New Beginning in Osaka, he unsuccessfully challenged Tama Tonga for the NEVER Openweight Championship. The following month, Phantasmo competed in the New Japan Cup but was eliminated in the first round by Tetsuya Naito.
In the months that followed, Phantasmo displayed increasing animosity towards the new Bullet Club leader, David Finlay, who had taken over after attacking former leader Jay White at Battle in the Valley. The tension reached a breaking point in April at Sakura Genesis. After a tag victory over Guerrillas of Destiny and Master Wato, Phantasmo and Finlay began shoving each other. Kenta and Gedo intervened, but instead of separating them, they attacked Phantasmo, with Kenta hitting a Go 2 Sleep. Phantasmo's long-time tag team partner, Taiji Ishimori, then entered the ring and also betrayed him with a low blow, confirming Phantasmo's dramatic expulsion from Bullet Club.
Following his expulsion, Phantasmo made a significant return at Wrestling Dontaku on May 3, 2023, where he attacked Finlay, marking a clear face turn. He adopted new entrance music and attire, challenging Finlay for the NEVER Openweight Championship at Dominion on June 4, but was unsuccessful, losing to Finlay's Powerbomb and INTO OBLIVION.
On June 25, Phantasmo competed on the buy-in show of Forbidden Door in Toronto, defeating All Elite Wrestling's Stu Grayson. The following month, he entered the annual G1 Climax tournament, competing in the B Block. Despite a strong showing against top competitors like Kazuchika Okada and Will Ospreay, he finished with 6 points, narrowly missing a spot in the quarterfinals after losing his final block match to Ospreay.
After the tournament, Phantasmo formally aligned himself with the Guerrillas of Destiny (G.o.D.) stable, which consisted primarily of former Bullet Club members like Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa. He officially joined the stable on the final day of the G1 tournament on August 13, 2023.
As a member of G.o.D., El Phantasmo frequently teamed with Hikuleo. On October 9, 2023, at Destruction in Ryogoku, they defeated Bullet Club War Dogs (Alex Coughlin and Gabe Kidd) to become the new Strong Openweight Tag Team Champions. From November 25 to December 6, Hikuleo and Phantasmo participated in the 2023 World Tag League, winning their block with a record of five wins and two losses, advancing to the semifinals. On December 8, they defeated Mikey Nicholls and Shane Haste in the semifinals but lost to IWGP Tag Team Champions Bishamon (Hirooki Goto and Yoshi-Hashi) in the finals on December 10. Following their victory, Bishamon challenged Hikuleo and Phantasmo to a rematch for both the IWGP and Strong Openweight Tag Team Championships in a Winner Takes All match.
On January 4, 2024, at Wrestle Kingdom 18, El Phantasmo and Hikuleo defeated Bishamon in the Winner Takes All match, thus becoming double tag team champions, holding both the IWGP Tag Team Championship and the Strong Openweight Tag Team Championship simultaneously. Their reign as IWGP Tag Team Champions ended on February 11 at The New Beginning in Osaka, where they lost the titles to Chase Owens and KENTA. On April 12, at Windy City Riot, Phantasmo and Hikuleo lost the Strong Openweight Tag Team Championship to TMDK (Mikey Nicholls and Shane Haste) in a four-corners match. However, they swiftly regained the titles from TMDK on May 11 at Resurgence. Their second reign with the Strong Openweight Tag Team Championship concluded on June 6, 2024, at Dominion 6.9 in Osaka-jo Hall, where they lost them back to TMDK in another Winner Takes All match that also involved the IWGP Tag Team Championships. Following this match, reports emerged that Hikuleo would be departing NJPW, signifying El Phantasmo's return to singles competition.
On December 22, 2024, at Korakuen Hall, Phantasmo made a triumphant return, announcing he was cancer-free. He attacked Ren Narita and declared his intention to compete for the NJPW World Television Championship. On January 4, 2025, at Wrestle Kingdom 19, El Phantasmo won the NJPW World Television Championship in a Four-way match, marking his first singles title in the promotion.
2.4. Impact Wrestling (2021-2023)
On the April 29, 2021, episode of Impact!, a vignette announced El Phantasmo's impending debut in Impact Wrestling. He made his in-ring debut the following week, soundly defeating enhancement talent VSK. The week after, Phantasmo won a six-way number-one contender's match for the right to challenge Josh Alexander for the Impact X Division Championship at Under Siege. However, he was unsuccessful in winning the title at the event on May 15, 2021.
Phantasmo returned to the company on the September 23, 2021, episode of Impact!, assisting fellow Bullet Club members Hikuleo and Chris Bey in their rivalry against FinJuice (David Finlay and Juice Robinson). In October, he entered a tournament to crown a new X Division Champion, where he defeated Willie Mack and Rohit Raju in the first round. However, he lost to Trey Miguel in the final at Bound for Glory on October 23, 2021.
On May 7, 2022, at Under Siege, Phantasmo returned to Impact, teaming with Bullet Club in a 10-man tag team match against Honor No More, though his team lost. His final notable appearance for Impact Wrestling was on August 20, 2023, at Multiverse United 2, where his team, "The World" (Phantasmo, The DKC, Josh Alexander, PCO, and Guerrillas of Destiny (Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa)), lost a 12-man tag team match to Bullet Club (Kenta, Ace Austin, Chris Bey, Alex Coughlin, Clark Connors, and David Finlay).
3. Professional Wrestling Style and Techniques
El Phantasmo employs a diverse array of professional wrestling techniques, blending high-flying athleticism with powerful strikes and a notorious reliance on foul play and deceptive tactics. This unique combination makes him a unpredictable and often controversial opponent in the ring.
3.1. Finishing Moves
El Phantasmo utilizes several potent finishing maneuvers to secure victories:
- CR II (Canadian Revolution II): This is his current signature finisher. The move involves placing the opponent's head between his legs, securing both of their arms behind their back (similar to a Drill-a-Hole Piledriver setup), lifting them, and then dropping them forward into a modified Facebuster. The name and execution are a direct homage to Milano Collection A.T.'s IR II (Italian Revolution II).
- CR III: A derivative of CR II, this move was first unveiled on August 16, 2022, during a G1 Climax 32 match against Shingo Takagi. Like CR II, it involves lifting the opponent with their head between his legs and arms trapped, but then Phantasmo sits down to deliver an arm-trapped modified Piledriver. This move was instrumental in defeating Takagi and preventing his advancement in the tournament.
- Spinning Neckbreaker Drop: A modified Neckbreaker Drop. Phantasmo wraps one of the opponent's arms around their neck, lifts them into an Argentine Backbreaker position, and then spins to slam them backward for a neckbreaker drop, targeting the back of their head and neck.
- Thunder Kiss '86: A spectacular Diving Body Press from the top turnbuckle. As he jumps, Phantasmo arches his body and grabs both of his ankles with his hands, maintaining this contorted posture as he crashes onto his opponent.
- Swanton Bomb Combination Moonsault Press: A combined aerial maneuver that incorporates elements of a Swanton Bomb and a Moonsault Press.
- Styles Clash: A move adopted from former Bullet Club leader AJ Styles.
- One Winged Angel: A high-impact move famously associated with former Bullet Club leader Kenny Omega. Phantasmo's use of this move, sometimes in conjunction with a V-Trigger (also an Omega signature), demonstrates his willingness to incorporate techniques from his former stablemates.
- Sudden Death ("Doubtful Right Foot"): This Superkick, frequently used since 2021, gained notoriety for its purported one-hit knockout power. El Phantasmo himself boasted it was the "strongest kick in professional wrestling" and compared himself to legendary strikers like Mitsuharu Misawa, Toshiaki Kawada, KENTA, and Katsuyori Shibata. However, the move was shrouded in controversy as opponents suspected Phantasmo was illegally concealing a metal slug or other foreign object in his boot. This led to the nickname "Doubtful Right Foot." After executing the kick, Phantasmo was often observed subtly checking his right boot, while his opponents reacted with exaggerated pain, often clutching their groin or back. Phantasmo publicly claimed his increased power came from training in Canadian coniferous forests during a self-isolation period and would sometimes remove his boot after matches to "prove" there was nothing inside. Despite his denials, wrestlers like Ryusuke Taguchi commented that Phantasmo's boot felt "clearly heavier than normal." El Desperado even attempted to use the boot himself in a match, only to experience intense pain, further fueling suspicions. The controversy culminated at Wrestle Kingdom 16 on January 5, 2022, during an IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship match, when Phantasmo's boot was forcibly removed, revealing a lead slug, which led to his team's disqualification. Since then, Phantasmo has continued to use Sudden Death without the illegal object, and while it may no longer be a guaranteed one-hit knockout, it remains a powerful and effective move in his arsenal.
3.2. Signature Moves
El Phantasmo's arsenal includes a wide range of offensive techniques:
- Striking Moves:
- Elbows: Includes standard Elbows and Elbow Stamps.
- Chops: Utilizes Horizontal Chops and Chop Smashes.
- Slaps: Open-hand Harite strikes.
- Punches: Features Knuckle Punches.
- Kicks: Incorporates various kicks such as Enzuigiri, V-Trigger (a running knee strike), Jumping Knee Bat, Big Boots, and Bicycle Kicks.
- Face Wash: A taunting move where he traps an opponent in the corner, rubs their face with the side of his boot, and finishes with a powerful boot to the face.
- Throwing Moves:
- Suplexes: Performs standard Suplexes and top-rope Superplexes.
- Canadian Destroyer: Executed in various forms, including the standard version, a top-rope variation, and as a counter.
- DDT: Employs regular DDTs and spinning Tornado DDTs.
- Jumping Cutter: A variation of the Diamond Cutter.
- Aerial Maneuvers:
- Moonsault Press: A standard Moonsault press.
- Rope Walk La Quebrada: A unique move where he twists his opponent's arm, then walks along the top rope before springing into a La Quebrada (reverse Moonsault press) using the momentum from the rope.
Rope Walk La Quebrada
3.3. Foul and Deceptive Tactics
El Phantasmo is infamous for his unsportsmanlike and deceptive tactics, often relying on rule-breaking to gain an advantage in matches, which has often drawn the ire of fans and referees alike.
- Scratching: A signature move where he scratches his opponent's back or chest, often making it a slow, deliberate act while holding them in a powerbomb position. He may also jump from the corner to scratch an opponent's back upon landing. If an opponent is wearing a shirt or full body suit, he may attempt to remove it first, as the tactic is less effective through clothing.
- Nipple Twisting: He frequently twists his opponent's nipples with both hands, causing them to writhe in pain. This move is effective even through clothing and can result in a referee's disqualification count if witnessed.
- Groin Stomp: When an opponent is hung upside down in the corner, Phantasmo will run from the opposite corner, feign a follow-up attack, then climb the second rope and repeatedly stomp the opponent's groin. He may also perform a sliding kick before climbing the ropes for the stomps, or simply go directly to the ropes. In tag team matches, he often performs this with his partner. This overtly illegal tactic consistently draws disqualification counts from referees and strong boos from the audience.
- Low Blow: A direct straight punch to the groin, typically used in the latter stages of a match when the referee's attention is diverted. This tactic has occasionally backfired if his opponent is wearing a foul cup, resulting in Phantasmo hurting himself.
4. Personal Life
In October 2024, Riley Vigier was diagnosed with cancer. However, on December 22, 2024, he publicly announced that he had successfully overcome the disease and was cancer-free.
