Derek Austin Cornelius was born on November 25, 1997, in Ajax, Ontario, Canada. His family background includes a Barbadian father and a Jamaican mother. Standing at 74 in (187 cm), from a very young age, Cornelius showed considerable talent in football. At six years old, he was selected for the Ajax Thunder under-8 team. In subsequent seasons, he was recognized as the Most Valuable Player at the Unionville Milliken Challenge Cup and later as the Most Valuable Player at the C.O.V.I. Championship at the U11 level.
In 2012, Cornelius participated in the Oviedo Cup with PFC CSKA Moscow in Spain. He also played in the Milk Cup in Northern Ireland with CSKA Moscow, where he was the team's top scorer, netting four goals during the tournament. That year concluded with an invitation to the CSKA Moscow Reserve Camp, and he also played in the U21 Provincial and Men's Regional leagues, scoring 22 goals in 30 games. 2.1. Early career in Germany
In January 2014, Cornelius moved to Germany, where he began training with the U19 team of VfB Lübeck. He spent two seasons associated with the main team. However, due to FIFA rules regarding underage players, he was ineligible to play professionally until January 1, 2016. During his time with VfB Lübeck, he contributed to the team's success, winning the Schleswig-Holstein Cup for two consecutive seasons in 2015 and 2016. He also made an appearance in the 2015-16 Regionalliga Nord. In the summer of 2016, he transferred to VfR Neumünster, where he played for the first half of the season, making 17 appearances and scoring 2 goals in the Oberliga Schleswig-Holstein.

During the winter transfer window of the 2016-17 season, Cornelius signed with Serbian SuperLiga club FK Javor Ivanjica after successful trials. 2.3. Vancouver Whitecaps FC
On January 18, 2019, Derek Cornelius returned to his home country, Canada, to sign with MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps FC. He made his debut for the Whitecaps on March 2, 2019, starting in their 2019 MLS season opener against Minnesota United. Cornelius scored his first goal for the club on May 18 against Sporting Kansas City. In July 2021, the Whitecaps announced that Cornelius would be loaned to Panetolikos of the Super League Greece until December 2022.
