Mendes da Silva began his professional career with Sparta Rotterdam, signing his first professional contract in 1999 after progressing through their youth system. He played 117 matches and scored 8 goals for Sparta during his initial five-year spell. In 2003, he had a brief loan stint with Ajax, but due to injuries, he was unable to secure a place under manager Ronald Koeman and made no official appearances before returning to Sparta. 6. Legal issues and conviction
In August 2022, David Mendes da Silva was arrested as part of an extensive investigation into drug trafficking activities within the Netherlands. The legal proceedings culminated in July 2023, when he was found guilty on multiple charges related to large-scale drug offenses. He was convicted of directly importing 395 lb (179 kg) of cocaine, preparing the import of an additional 2.9 K lb (1.30 K kg) of cocaine, and actively participating in the sale of cocaine. Furthermore, he was found guilty of bribery, specifically bribing a shipping clerk for 100.00 K EUR to obtain information regarding the locations of shipping containers used to transport drugs. For these offenses, Mendes da Silva was sentenced to seven years in prison.
