After graduating from high school, he spent time in Australia, working as an assistant at Christ Church Grammar School in Perth, Western Australia. He described this role as "actually a glorified security-guard position," noting that he conducted only about six investigations during his entire tenure. He was considering joining the New York City Police Department in 1992 when he was invited by Bryan Singer to write the screenplay for Public Access.

6. Upcoming projects
McQuarrie has several announced or in-development future film and television projects. In February 2011, Skydance Media hired him to write and produce a feature film adaptation of the 1970s animated television series Star Blazers, which is itself an adaptation of the anime Space Battleship Yamato. By 2013, he was selected to direct this project, with Zach Dean later hired in 2017 to write a new draft of the script.
He is also signed on to direct several thrillers:
- Ice Station Zebra, a remake based on the 1963 novel and its 1968 film adaptation.
- Three to Kill, based on the novel by Jean-Patrick Manchette, which is set to star Colin Firth.
- The Chameleon, based on a The New Yorker article by David Grann about Frédéric Bourdin. This project involves Christopher and Heather McQuarrie teaming with Rachel and Terence Winter for Netflix.
In August 2022, McQuarrie announced on the Light the Fuse podcast that he was developing a new project with Tom Cruise, to be co-written by Erik Jendresen. He described this film as "gnarlier" than the Mission: Impossible films and "something we've talked about for a really long time," suggesting it would be "way outside of what you're used to seeing Tom do." A few days later, it was also revealed that he and Cruise were developing an original musical as a star vehicle for Cruise. Additionally, they were considering a potential project for Cruise to reprise his role as Les Grossman from Tropic Thunder, though it was unclear if Grossman would receive his own film or be included in other projects. Despite the Reacher franchise migrating to television, McQuarrie and Cruise are continuing to develop a Reacher-like thriller film.
