1. Early Life and Background
Charlene Choi's early life was marked by her birth in Canada and a subsequent move to Hong Kong, where she received her education and began her journey into the entertainment world.

1.1. Birth and Family
Charlene Choi was born on 22 November 1982, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. A few years after her birth, her family relocated to Hong Kong. Her parents divorced when she was young, and she primarily lived with her father, maintaining a close relationship with both parents.
1.2. Education
Choi attended Marymount Secondary School and Rosaryhill School in Hong Kong. She is fluent in Cantonese, English, and Mandarin. Rosaryhill School was notable for having many future pop stars among its alumni.
1.3. Early Career
After graduating from Rosaryhill School, Choi began her career as a full-time model in Hong Kong. Her modeling work led to her being scouted by Emperor Entertainment Group (EEG), a prominent entertainment company. She was subsequently paired with Gillian Chung to form the Cantopop group Twins, marking her official entry into the music industry. Prior to the formation of Twins, Choi had already made her acting debut in the 2000 television drama Youth Y2K.
2. Career
Charlene Choi's career is extensive, encompassing significant achievements in music, acting, and various other media ventures, solidifying her status as a leading figure in the Hong Kong entertainment scene.
2.1. Musical Career
Choi's musical journey began with the highly successful pop duo Twins and later expanded into a notable solo career, earning her widespread recognition and numerous awards.
2.1.1. Group Activities (Twins)
Charlene Choi debuted as a member of Twins in 2001, forming a dynamic duo with Gillian Chung. The group quickly rose to prominence, becoming one of Hong Kong's most recognized and successful pop acts. In 2002, Twins held their "Ichiban Excitement Concert" at the Hong Kong Coliseum, where Choi, at 19, set a record as the youngest female singer to perform at the venue, a record later broken in 2011 by G.E.M.. Their collaboration continued for many years, producing numerous hit songs and albums. In early 2008, following Gillian Chung's involvement in the Edison Chen photo scandal, the female lead role in the film The Butterfly Lovers, originally slated for Chung, was changed to Choi. Subsequently, Twins maintained only their group name, and both Choi and Chung pursued solo activities. In 2021, to celebrate Twins' 20th anniversary, Choi reunited with Chung to release new songs, including "Femininity" and "Nice to Meet You" (the theme song for the movie "Sunny Sisters"). Their 20th-anniversary celebration also included an online concert, "TME live Super Live Twins 20 Love You Anniversary Celebration," broadcast live with Tencent's TME and JOOX. In 2022, Choi and Chung participated in the Chinese comeback survival reality show Sisters Who Make Waves season 3, where Choi debuted in 7th place.
2.1.2. Solo Music Career
While primarily known for her work with Twins, Charlene Choi also developed a successful solo music career. Her first solo song, "Diva, Ah Hey!", was released in Twins' 2003 album Touch of Love, earning a Best Song nomination at the 23rd Hong Kong Film Awards and a spot in the Top 10 Songs at the Jade Solid Gold Songs Awards Ceremony. She continued to release solo tracks within Twins' albums, such as "Watching Movie Alone" in their 2006 Mandarin album Around the World with 80 Dollars, and "You are Not a Good Lover" in their 2006 Cantonese album Ho Hoo Tan, the latter being her first recorded personal composition. Her solo songs "Little Sister" and "60 Percent" were released in Twins' 2008 Mandarin album Tong Hua Yan Yu. "Little Sister" in particular recounts Choi's relationship with her mother despite her parents' divorce and earned her several music awards.
Her solo career truly took off with the release of her first solo single, "Make a Wish," in 2008. This award-winning song sold 5000 copies within 30 minutes, with all proceeds benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Both "Little Sister" and "Make a Wish" achieved top positions on music charts, remaining in the top 10 across four music charts for over 11 weeks. During Twins' hiatus, Choi received several solo singer awards in 2008, including Favorite Idol and Most Voted Singer at the Metro Showbiz Hit Awards, Most Popular Female Singer at the Vanguard Music Awards, and Most Popular Hong Kong Female Artist at the Sprite Music Awards.
In late 2008, she collaborated with JJ Lin on the duet "Little Dimples," which garnered six awards within three months. Choi released her debut solo album, Two Without One, on 9 April 2009. It achieved "Gold" certification in Hong Kong within a week, selling 10,000 copies, and was certified "Platinum" in less than a month, selling a total of 30,000 copies. Due to high demand, a limited second version was released. Her next EP, Another Me, released on 15 October 2009, also achieved "Platinum" status, selling nearly 60,000 copies in Hong Kong and high sales across Asia and overseas. Her solo success in 2009 was recognized at the IFPI HK Top Sales Music Awards, where she was named one of the "Top 10 Best Selling Hong Kong Singers of 2009," and both her album and EP were awarded "Top 10 Best Selling Cantonese Albums of 2009."
Following this success, Choi released her debut Mandarin album, As A Sa, in 2010, with over 1.00 M HKD invested in its production. She embarked on a country-wide promotional tour for the album. Her third Cantonese album, Beauty Remains, was released on 15 October 2010. Later solo releases include Sweetest Day (2011), Montage (2012), and Blooming (2013).
2.2. Acting Career

She once described her approach to acting, stating that as an artist, she always strives to show her best performance and maintain a "battle mode" during work. In her free time, she prefers slow-paced movies like comedies, romances, or human-interest films, as fast-paced ones make her tense.
2.2.1. Film Roles
Choi's first film appearance was in Funeral March (2001), which earned her a Best New Performer nomination at the 21st Hong Kong Film Awards. Her role in Diva - Ah Hey (2003) as a young girl aspiring to be a singer garnered positive attention. She gained significant recognition for her performance as Dani Dan, a kind and comedic porn star, in the comedy film Simply Actors (2007), for which she won Best Actress and Favourite Actress awards at the 2007 Golden Bauhinia Awards. Her role in the Pang brothers' psychological thriller Diary (2006) also earned her numerous film award nominations and the Best Actress award at the 11th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival. Choi has taken Jim Chim as a mentor.

In 2009, she took on the main female lead role as Second Dream in The Storm Warriors, which ranked fifth in the Hong Kong Chinese-language box office that year.
In 2010, Choi focused more on acting projects, appearing in Beauty on Duty with Sandra Ng, Triple Tap with Daniel Wu and Louis Koo, and The Jade and the Pearl with Raymond Lam, Joey Yung, and Wong Cho-lam. She also concluded work on Treasure Inn with Nicholas Tse and Nick Cheung. In Wai Ka Fai's film Detective vs Sleuths (2022), Choi took risks by performing many of her own stunts.
Her performance in Sara (2015) earned her the Best Actress Award at the 6th Macau International Movie Festival, the Most Popular Actress Audience Award at the 15th Chinese Film Media Awards, and nominations for Best Actress at the 34th Hong Kong Film Awards and 22nd Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards. She also received a Special Mention at the 10th Osaka Asian Film Festival for the same role. In 2019, she was nominated for Best Actress at the 38th Hong Kong Film Awards for The Lady Improper and won Best Actress at the 11th Macau International Movie Festival for the same film. For Fatal Visit (2020), she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the 39th Hong Kong Film Awards and the Macau International Movie Festival. Her recent films include The Goldfinger (2023) and My Best Bet (2025).

In 2008, she began filming her first Taiwanese television drama, Calling For Love, produced by Angie Chai and co-starring Mike He, which aired in May 2010. She also co-starred with Nicholas Tse in the mainland Chinese television series Sword Heroes' Fate, which aired in 2011. Other notable television roles include Happy Marshal (2012), Police Tactical Unit (2018), and Forensic JD (2022), a reunion drama for Twins' 20th anniversary.
2.3. Other Ventures
Beyond her core music and acting work, Charlene Choi has engaged in various other media activities, showcasing her diverse talents and public appeal. In late 2008, Choi expanded her career by starring as the female lead Rose in the musical Knight Star, reuniting with Jimmy Lin after seven years. The musical also featured Julian Cheung and Alice Liu and served as a promotional event for Chivas's "Live with Chivalry" campaign in China.
2.3.1. Variety Shows and Appearances
Choi has made numerous appearances on television variety programs and talk shows, both individually and with Gillian Chung as Twins. These include shows like Fresh Sunday, Run for Time S02, Happy Camp, Keep Running S2, and Sweet Tasks. Her involvement in these programs allows her to showcase her personality and engage with a broader audience. In 2021, she participated in the Douyin series Because It's Friends with Twins and Joey Yung. In 2022, she was a guest star on Hello Saturday and appeared in The Late Lovers, Baichuan Kedou Town, and Promise For You (later renamed Meet Rosy Clouds). 3. Personal Life
Charlene Choi's personal life has been a subject of public interest, marked by her marriage and subsequent divorce, as well as other significant relationships.
3.1. Marriage and Divorce
Charlene Choi and actor Ronald Cheng first met through the film The Pursuit of 15 August, with rumors of their dating circulating during the production. Despite repeatedly denying their relationship, Choi stated on 17 March 2010, during the promotion of the film The Secret Order of Beauty, that she had broken up with Cheng some time prior due to mutual understanding. Cheng also admitted their separation during the promotion of his film The Treasure Box of Yue Guang. It was later revealed by Hong Kong's Apple Daily on 27 March 2010, that they had secretly married in Van Nuys, Los Angeles, on 31 January 2006. On the same day, Choi and Cheng held a press conference where they publicly admitted their marriage and announced that they had completed divorce procedures several months prior.
3.2. Relationships
Following her divorce from Ronald Cheng, Charlene Choi and actor William Chan publicly confirmed their relationship on 10 October 2010, after collaborating on the film The Secret Order of Beauty. Their relationship lasted for five years, with both issuing a statement on Weibo announcing their breakup on 20 September 2015. In the fall of 2017, rumors emerged that Choi was dating Shi Hengcong, a "billionaire mahjong heir," which she later confirmed. In 2019, Choi completed her second egg freezing procedure.
4. Philanthropy
Charlene Choi has actively engaged in various philanthropic endeavors, demonstrating her commitment to social causes. She has been a donor to the Make-A-Wish Foundation since 2001 and became an ambassador for the organization in 2008. Her hit single "Make a Wish" (2008) sold 5000 copies in 30 minutes, with all proceeds donated to the foundation. She also sold clothing from her own "SAL" line to raise additional funds for the foundation.
Choi authored an autobiographical book titled Single Family's Love, which explores her experiences growing up with divorced parents. The book includes personal notes exchanged between her and her father, aiming to encourage readers to find happiness in single-parent families. The proceeds from the 5000 limited first edition copies were all donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Friends like Jay Chou (who wrote the introduction), bandmate Gillian Chung, Niki Chow, Mani, and Wu Chun were significant supporters, purchasing copies for their friends and families. A new edition of her book is currently being printed for overseas distribution.
In February 2009, Choi became an ambassador for the 30 Hours Famine charity. She traveled to Nepal for a week to deliver supplies to schools and learned local gardening techniques. In April 2009, she performed at the 30-Hour Famine Concert, opening the event and performing a mix of new Chinese and English songs, as well as older Twins songs, for nearly an hour.
