1. Early life and junior career
Benjamin Bonzi had a notable junior career, culminating in a significant victory at a major tournament. In 2014, he won the French Open boys' doubles title alongside his fellow countryman Quentin Halys. They secured the title by defeating the duo of Lucas Miedler and Akira Santillan in the final in straight sets.
2. Professional career
Benjamin Bonzi's professional tennis journey is marked by gradual ascent through the ranks, from initial Grand Slam appearances to consistent success on the ATP Challenger Tour and eventual breakthroughs on the main ATP Tour circuit, leading to multiple finals and a career-high ranking.
2.1. Early career and Grand Slam debuts
Bonzi's professional career began with his first appearances at Grand Slam tournaments. In 2017, he received a wildcard entry for the 2017 French Open. He secured his first Grand Slam main draw win in the first round after Daniil Medvedev retired from their match. Bonzi then advanced to the second round, where he was defeated by the 19th seed, Albert Ramos Vinolas.
In 2018, Bonzi made his debut at the 2018 Wimbledon Championships after successfully navigating the qualifying rounds, including a victory over Britain's James Ward in the final qualifying match. However, his run in the main draw ended in the first round with a loss to Lukáš Lacko.
The year 2019 saw Bonzi reach a significant milestone in mixed doubles. As a wildcard entry at the 2019 French Open, he partnered with fellow French player Amandine Hesse and reached the quarterfinals of the mixed doubles event. Their campaign concluded with a defeat to the eventual champions, Ivan Dodig and Latisha Chan. In the same year, Bonzi made his first ATP doubles final appearance as a wildcard at the 2019 Open Sud de France, partnering with Antoine Hoang. They faced top seeds Édouard Roger-Vasselin and Ivan Dodig in the final, ultimately losing in straight sets.
In 2020, Bonzi qualified for the 2020 French Open, notably defeating Ivo Karlović during the qualifying stages. In the first round of the main draw, he overcame Finland's Emil Ruusuvuori, before being defeated by the young Italian player Jannik Sinner in the second round. In the doubles draw at the 2020 French Open, Bonzi and his partner Antoine Hoang, playing as wildcards, advanced to the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in their careers. They were eventually defeated by the eighth-seeded German duo and eventual champions, Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies.
2.2. Challenger Tour success and ranking ascent
The year 2021 marked a significant turning point in Bonzi's career, highlighted by remarkable success on the ATP Challenger Tour and a rapid rise in the world rankings. He began the year by securing his first two Challenger titles in Potchefstroom, South Africa, and Ostrava, Czech Republic.
In July, Bonzi successfully qualified for the 2021 Wimbledon Championships and reached the second round for the first time, overcoming fellow qualifier Marco Trungelliti in his opening match. He then lost to the 32nd seed, Marin Čilić, in the second round.
Bonzi made his debut in the top 100 of the ATP singles rankings on 2 August 2021, climbing 16 spots to a new career-high of world No. 95 after winning the Segovia Challenger against Tim van Rijthoven. As the top seed in qualifying for the 2021 US Open, he was defeated by American player Aleksandar Kovacevic in the second round.

Continuing his dominant form on the Challenger Tour, Bonzi secured his fourth title of the year at the Saint-Tropez tournament in August. He then followed this with two more consecutive Challenger titles in France, winning the Cassis and Rennes events. These victories marked his fifth and sixth Challenger titles of 2021, giving him three titles on home soil in just three weeks with a combined loss of only three sets. This achievement made him the first player to win three consecutive Challenger tournaments since Mikhail Youzhny in 2016. Bonzi also joined an elite group of players-Facundo Bagnis (2016), Juan Ignacio Chela (2001), and Younes El Aynaoui (1998)-as one of only four players to lift six singles trophies in a single season in ATP Challenger history. As a result of this remarkable success, he reached a new career-high ranking of world No. 61 on 20 September 2021, and subsequently entered the top 60 on 1 November 2021.
2.3. ATP Tour breakthroughs
In 2022, Bonzi continued his ascent by achieving significant breakthroughs on the main ATP Tour. At his debut in the 2022 Australian Open, he secured his first main draw victory at the tournament by defeating Peter Gojowczyk.
At the Open 13 in Marseille, Bonzi, seeded ninth after the withdrawal of Gianluca Mager, embarked on a strong run. He defeated Kamil Majchrzak, defending finalist Pierre-Hugues Herbert, and notably, fourth seed Aslan Karatsev, marking his first career victory against a top-20 ranked player. This impressive performance led him to his first career semifinal on the ATP Tour, where he was ultimately defeated by the second seed, Andrey Rublev.
Bonzi continued to make strides at ATP Masters 1000 events. On his debut at the Indian Wells Masters, he reached the third round for the first time at this level, defeating 21st seed Lorenzo Sonego before losing to 10th seed Jannik Sinner.
At the 2022 Mallorca Championships, Bonzi reached the quarterfinals by defeating world No. 15 and third seed Denis Shapovalov in the second round. He advanced to his second career ATP Tour semifinal by defeating Daniel Altmaier in the quarterfinals, remarkably doing so without dropping a single set in his three preceding matches. His consistent performance led to him reaching the top 50 in the ATP singles rankings, achieving world No. 47 on 27 June 2022. He reached the second round at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships for the second consecutive year, losing to 29th seed Jenson Brooksby, and later ascended to the top 45 in the rankings on 25 July 2022.
In the lead-up to the US Open, Bonzi participated in the 2022 Winston-Salem Open, where he defeated Kyle Edmund in the second round and then Thiago Monteiro to reach the quarterfinals. At the US Open, Bonzi won his first main draw match at the tournament on his debut, overcoming fellow countryman Ugo Humbert in a five-set encounter. His tournament run ended in the second round with a loss to Nick Kyrgios.
2.4. ATP finals and career-high achievements
The year 2023 saw Benjamin Bonzi reach his first two ATP Tour finals, marking significant milestones in his career. His first final came at the Pune tournament in January. On his path to the final, he defeated Tseng Chun-hsin, Emil Ruusuvuori, Filip Krajinović, and Botic van de Zandschulp. In his maiden ATP Tour final, he was defeated by Tallon Griekspoor in three sets.
At the 2023 Australian Open, Bonzi reached the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career, achieving a notable five-set comeback victory against 14th seed Pablo Carreño Busta after being down two sets to love. He subsequently lost to 22nd seed Alex de Minaur in straight sets. In the same tournament, Bonzi also reached the quarterfinals in doubles for the first time at a Major, partnering with Arthur Rinderknech. They were eventually defeated by the eventual runners-up, Hugo Nys and Jan Zieliński.
In February, Bonzi made his second consecutive semifinal appearance at the 2023 Open 13 Provence. During his run, he defeated two seeded players, fifth seed Maxime Cressy and third seed Alex de Minaur, taking revenge for his loss to de Minaur at the Australian Open in January. He then reached his second final of the season and his career by defeating fellow countryman Arthur Fils. In the final, he was defeated in straight sets by top seed Hubert Hurkacz.
Following these demanding tournaments, Bonzi notably skipped the American "Sunshine double" (Indian Wells and Miami Masters) and most clay court tournaments, with the exception of the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters. He also chose not to compete in the 2023 French Open. As a consequence of these absences and his first-round loss at Wimbledon on 17 July 2023, his ranking dropped, and he fell out of the top 100.
Despite this, Bonzi received a wildcard entry for the main draw of the US Open. He defeated fellow countryman Quentin Halys to reach the second round for the second consecutive year. He then went on to defeat 28th seed Christopher Eubanks, advancing to the third round of a Major for the second time in his career. In September, Bonzi reached the final of the 2023 Open de Rennes, his first Challenger final in over a year, where he was defeated by Maxime Cressy after retiring from the match. As a result of this run, he returned to the top 100, reaching world No. 93 on 18 September 2023.
By 15 April 2024, Bonzi's ranking had fallen to world No. 182, 140 spots below his career-high ranking from the previous year. However, his resilience shone through in July when he won his first ATP Challenger Tour title in two years at the Winnipeg tournament, defeating Sho Shimabukuro in the final.
In October 2024, Bonzi experienced a remarkable 14-match winning streak, reaching three consecutive ATP Challenger Tour finals on home soil in France. He first clinched the title at the Roanne Challenger, defeating fellow countryman Matteo Martineau in the final. He then secured a second consecutive title at the Saint-Brieuc Challenger, where he overcame top seed Lucas Pouille in the final. His impressive streak culminated in a third straight final at the Brest Challenger, though he ultimately lost to Otto Virtanen.
In November, ranked world No. 124, Bonzi achieved his career's pinnacle by winning his first ATP Tour title at the Moselle Open as a qualifier. On his championship run, he defeated second seed Casper Ruud, eighth seed Alex Michelsen, and then Cameron Norrie in straight sets in the final. This historic victory propelled him back into the top 100, reaching world No. 78. His career-high singles ranking remains world No. 42, achieved on 6 February 2023, while his career-high doubles ranking is world No. 121, achieved on 19 September 2022.
