Anel Hadžić's early life and formative years were significantly shaped by the Bosnian War and his subsequent relocation to Austria, where he cultivated his passion for football.
1.1. Early childhood and education
Anel Hadžić was born on 16 August 1989, in Velika Kladuša, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Due to the outbreak of the Bosnian War, his family was forced to flee their native country and relocate to Austria. It was in Austria that Hadžić began playing football at a local club, FC Andorf, where he was part of their youth system from 1997 to 1999. In 1999, he joined the youth academy of SV Ried, continuing his development within the Austrian football system.
1.2. Early career
Hadžić made his professional debut for FC Wels where he played 5 matches and scored 2 goals. Following his stint at FC Wels, he returned to SV Ried, the club where he had spent his youth career since 1999. He made his professional debut for Ried against SK Austria Kärnten on 29 September 2007, at the age of 17. On 25 October 2009, he scored his first professional goal in a match against FC Red Bull Salzburg.
2. Club career
Anel Hadžić's professional career saw him play for several clubs across Austria, Turkey, and Hungary, achieving notable success, particularly in Hungary.
2.1. SV Ried
After making his professional debut with FC Wels, Anel Hadžić returned to SV Ried, where he had previously been part of their youth academy. He played a significant role for the club, making his professional debut against SK Austria Kärnten on 29 September 2007, when he was 17 years old. His first professional goal for Ried came on 25 October 2009, in a match against FC Red Bull Salzburg. During his tenure at Ried, he developed into a key player before moving on in 2013.
2.2. SK Sturm Graz
In May 2013, Hadžić transferred to SK Sturm Graz, another prominent Austrian club. He spent three years with Sturm Graz, contributing to their campaigns in the Austrian Football Bundesliga and other competitions.
2.3. Eskişehirspor
In January 2016, Hadžić made a move to Turkish football, joining Eskişehirspor. The transfer fee for his move was reported to be 300.00 K EUR. He played for the club during the 2015-16 Süper Lig season.
2.4. Fehérvár FC
Following Eskişehirspor's relegation, Anel Hadžić signed a two-year deal with Hungarian club Fehérvár FC (then known as Videoton FC) in August 2016. He quickly made an impact, debuting officially for the team in a Magyar Kupa game against Pécs on 14 September, where he also managed to score a goal. Two weeks later, on 24 September, he made his league debut against Honvéd. His first league goal for Fehérvár came on 22 October in a victory over Paks. Hadžić achieved his first major title with the club on 27 May 2018, when Fehérvár FC were crowned champions of the Nemzeti Bajnokság I. In June of the same year, he extended his contract with the club until June 2020. On 20 April 2019, he played his 100th game for Fehérvár FC against Ferencvárosi TC. He also won the Magyar Kupa with Fehérvár in the 2018-19 season.
2.5. Later career
In January 2021, Anel Hadžić returned to Austria, joining Wacker Innsbruck. Later that year, in July, he moved to FC Wels, the club where he had started his professional career. On 17 December 2021, at the age of 33, Hadžić announced his retirement from professional football.
3. International career
Anel Hadžić's international career involved representing Austria at youth levels before switching his allegiance to Bosnia and Herzegovina for his senior career.
3.1. Youth career
Hadžić represented Austria at various youth levels. In 2008, he played one match and scored one goal for the Austrian U-20 team. From 2009 to 2010, he made two appearances for the Austrian U-21 team, though he did not score any goals at that level.
3.2. Senior career
Despite his youth appearances for Austria, Anel Hadžić expressed his desire to play for Bosnia and Herzegovina at the senior level. In September 2013, his request to change his sports citizenship from Austrian to Bosnian was officially approved by FIFA. Consequently, in February 2014, he received his first senior call-up for a friendly match against Egypt. He made his senior international debut for Bosnia and Herzegovina in that game on 5 March 2014, which took place in Innsbruck, Austria.
In June 2014, Hadžić was included in Bosnia and Herzegovina's squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. This marked a historic moment for the nation, as it was their first participation in a major international tournament. He made his tournament debut in Bosnia and Herzegovina's final group stage match against Iran on 25 June. He earned a total of 14 caps for the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team between 2014 and 2017.
4. Personal life
Anel Hadžić is the older brother of Elvir Hadžić, who is also a professional footballer. In June 2019, Anel Hadžić married his long-time girlfriend, Alma. The couple has a son named Rayan, who was born in October 2020.
