4. Personal Life and Controversies

When the police stopped the vehicle and placed the driver in a patrol car to prepare a report, Ionov attempted to flee the scene in the Infiniti.
He was quickly apprehended by the police. However, upon detention, Ionov refused to undergo a police inspection and reportedly verbally abused the officers. For his defiance, he was fined 2.00 K RUB. Witnesses and police officials stated that Ionov also appeared to be intoxicated during the incident. Dmitry Zimmerman, a spokesperson for FC Zenit Saint Petersburg at the time, condemned Ionov's actions and announced that Ionov would be prohibited from participating in any activities outside of training until May 12, 2012, which marked the end of the season. This disciplinary action highlighted a critical period for Ionov, especially considering that the incident occurred just one day after Zenit's 1-0 victory against FC Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Champions League, a match he had not participated in. The episode underscored the importance of responsible conduct for professional athletes and the consequences of actions that fall short of public expectations.
