5. Personal life
Bertinelli's personal life has been notably public, marked by significant relationships and milestones. According to his autobiography, musician Paul Shaffer dated Bertinelli on a "few fun dates" when she was 16 years old and he was 27.

In 1981, Valerie Bertinelli married rock musician Eddie Van Halen. The couple had one son, Wolfgang Van Halen, who was born on March 16, 1991. They separated in 2001 and their divorce was finalized on December 20, 2007. In her autobiography, Bertinelli candidly revealed that the primary reasons for their divorce stemmed from Van Halen's cocaine addiction and his refusal to stop smoking, even after being diagnosed with oral cancer and undergoing surgery that resulted in the removal of one-third of his tongue. Despite their divorce, they maintained an amicable relationship, and Bertinelli was present at his bedside when he passed away.
In May 2010, Bertinelli announced her engagement to financial planner Tom Vitale. Their relationship had begun in 2004. They were married on January 1, 2011, in a ceremony held in Malibu, California. Through her marriage to Vitale, Bertinelli gained four step-children. Notably, both her ex-husband, Eddie Van Halen, and their son, Wolfgang Van Halen, attended the wedding.
