1. Club career
Roger Ibañez's professional football career spans several clubs across Brazil, Italy, and Saudi Arabia, marked by his development from a midfielder into a prominent center-back.
1.1. Early career
Born in Canela, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, to a Uruguayan mother, Ibañez started his football career relatively late in 2016, at the age of 18, with Grêmio Atlético OsorienseGrêmio Atlético OsoriensePortuguese. Initially, he played as a midfielder.
1.1.1. PRS Futebol Clube
Later in 2016, Ibañez joined PRS Futebol Clube. He made his senior debut with the club during the 2016 Copa Serrana, which marked PRS Futebol Clube's first professional competition. After a brief loan spell, upon returning to PRS, he became a regular starter during the club's Campeonato Gaúcho Série B campaign in 2017.
1.1.2. CS Sergipe
On December 5, 2016, Ibañez signed with Sergipe on a loan deal for the season. However, his tenure at the club was brief, and he featured rarely. Consequently, he was recalled by PRS Futebol Clube on March 4, 2017.
1.2. Fluminense
In the middle of 2017, Ibañez moved to Fluminense FC, initially joining their under-20 squad. Due to the club's financial difficulties and subsequent player sales, he was promoted to the first team for the 2018 season by manager Abel Braga. He made his professional debut on January 20, 2018, starting in a 0-0 Campeonato Carioca home draw against Botafogo.
On February 28, 2018, Fluminense acquired Ibañez's federative rights, and he signed a new five-year contract with the club. His Série A debut came on April 15, starting in a 2-1 away loss against Corinthians. He concluded the 2018 campaign with 14 league appearances.
1.3. Atalanta
On January 29, 2019, Ibañez made a move to Italian club Atalanta BC. After being included in the squad in February, he made his debut on May 11, appearing as a substitute for Josip Iličić in the final minutes of a 2-1 victory over Genoa. This match was crucial for Atalanta, as the club was intensely vying for a top-four finish in Serie A and their first-ever qualification for the UEFA Champions League, which they successfully achieved.
Ibañez made his first appearance of the following season on the final matchday of Atalanta's 2019-20 UEFA Champions League group stage campaign. With Atalanta needing a win away against Shakhtar Donetsk, Ibañez was brought on for centre-forward Luis Muriel for the last 20 minutes, with Atalanta holding a 1-0 lead. The team had shifted from their usual three-back formation to a four-back system in pursuit of the decisive goal. Ibañez's inclusion in the squad was facilitated by the suspension of Rafael Toloi and an injury to Simon Kjær, as he had only been named in one of the five previous Champions League matchday squads. Atalanta ultimately secured a 3-0 victory, successfully qualifying for the knockout stage of the competition.

1.4. Roma
On January 27, 2020, Ibañez transferred to fellow Serie A club Roma, signing a four-and-a-half-year contract. The transfer was initially structured as a loan deal until June 30, 2021, with an obligation to convert to a permanent transfer for a predetermined fee of 8.00 M EUR if certain conditions were met. This agreement also included potential performance-related bonuses up to 2.00 M EUR. Furthermore, if Ibañez were to be transferred from Roma before the end of June 2024, 10% of the transfer fee would be paid to Atalanta. If he remained at Roma until after June 2024, Atalanta would receive a fixed payment of 1.00 M EUR. Should Roma sell Ibañez after June 2024, Atalanta would be entitled to 10% of the profit Roma made from the transfer. On March 4, 2021, Ibañez signed a new long-term deal with Roma, extending his contract until June 30, 2025. During his time at Roma, he played a significant role in various domestic and European competitions, including the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Europa Conference League.
1.5. Al-Ahli
On August 10, 2023, Roger Ibañez completed a permanent transfer to Saudi club Al-Ahli for a reported fee of 30.00 M EUR, including bonuses. He quickly made an impact, scoring his first goal for the club on August 18, in a 3-1 away victory against Khaleej Club. He continues to play for Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League.
2. International career
Roger Ibañez began his international career representing Brazil at the youth level. In September 2019, he received his first call-up to the Brazil U-23 national team, for which he made 6 appearances.
On September 9, 2022, Ibañez earned his first call-up to the senior Brazil national football team, for friendly matches against Ghana and Tunisia. He subsequently made his senior international debut on September 27, in a 5-1 victory over Tunisia.
