Wilson began his football journey as an amateur player with Woodburn Athletic. In 1963, he joined West Bromwich Albion as an amateur, marking his entry into a club where he would later achieve professional status.

Wilson turned professional with West Bromwich Albion in 1964. He remained with the club as a professional player until 1976. Initially, he played on the left side of midfield, but he soon established himself in the left-back position. He was noted for his hard tackling, which allowed him to dislodge Graham Williams from the position. For several years, Wilson was a regular fixture at left-back for the club. During his time at West Bromwich Albion, he made 232 appearances and scored 3 goals in domestic league matches. He also represented Scotland U23 once in 1970.
