1. Early life and family
Philipp Max was born on 30 September 1993, in Viersen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. He is the son of former German international striker Martin Max, who was also a professional footballer.
2. Club career
Max's club career began in youth systems before transitioning to senior professional play, where he made a significant impact as a left-back across several German and Dutch clubs.
2.1. Schalke 04
Philipp Max joined the Schalke 04 youth academy in 2010, having previously been part of Bayern Munich's youth setup. He made his professional debut in the Bundesliga for the first team on 25 March 2014, coming on as a substitute for Julian Draxler in a derby match against Borussia Dortmund.
2.2. Karlsruher SC
Following his time at Schalke 04, Max signed a three-year contract with Karlsruher SC on 30 April 2014, with the agreement taking effect the following season. He played a total of 23 league matches during his tenure with Karlsruher SC.
2.3. FC Augsburg
On 4 August 2015, Max made a move to FC Augsburg, signing a two-year contract that included an option for extension. The transfer fee for his move was reported to be around 3.60 M EUR. He scored his first Bundesliga goal for Augsburg on 30 April 2017, contributing to a 4-0 victory over Hamburger SV.
The 2017-18 Bundesliga season was particularly successful for Max, as he finished with 2 goals and 12 assists for Augsburg. His 12 assists made him the second top assist provider in the league, only behind Bayern Munich's Thomas Müller, who had 14 assists. In December 2018, Max reached a significant milestone, making his 100th league appearance for Augsburg in a 2-2 draw against Hertha BSC. 2.4. PSV Eindhoven
On 2 September 2020, Philipp Max transferred to Dutch club PSV Eindhoven, where he signed a four-year contract. During his time at PSV, he continued to be a key player, contributing to the team's performances in domestic and European competitions. In the 2021-22 PSV Eindhoven season, he made 17 appearances in European competitions, including six in the UEFA Champions League, five in the UEFA Europa League (scoring one goal), and six in the UEFA Europa Conference League.
2.5. Eintracht Frankfurt
Max joined Eintracht Frankfurt on a loan deal on 31 January 2023, which included an option for a permanent transfer. He contributed to the team during this loan spell. On 26 May 2023, Eintracht Frankfurt activated the buy option, making his transfer permanent, and he signed a three-year contract with the club.
2.6. Panathinaikos
On 6 August 2024, Philipp Max moved to Greece, signing a three-year contract with Panathinaikos. This marks his most recent club transfer, where he continues his career as a left-back in the Super League Greece.
3. International career
Philipp Max has represented Germany at various international levels, including youth teams and the senior national team, achieving notable success.
3.1. Youth and Olympic team
Max was a key member of the German Olympic team that participated in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. He made three appearances and scored one goal during the tournament. Germany ultimately won the silver medal after reaching the final.
