Oleh Husiev's playing career spanned over a decade, predominantly with FC Dynamo Kyiv, where he became a club legend. He also represented Ukraine on the international stage in major tournaments, showcasing his skill and versatility as both a midfielder and a defender.
1.1. Early Career
Born on 25 April 1983, in Sumy, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union, Oleh Husiev began his football journey in his youth. He honed his skills at the SS Zmina Sumy or Barsa Sumy youth football academy.
Husiev started his senior professional career with FC Frunzenets-Liha-99 Sumy, where he played from 2000 to 2002. During this period, he made 64 appearances and scored 17 goals across the AAFU and Druha Liha. In the 2002-03 season, he briefly played for FC Borysfen Boryspil on loan in the Persha Liha, making one appearance. He then transferred to FC Arsenal Kyiv in the same season, playing 23 matches and scoring 1 goal in the Vyshcha Liha. Standing at 70 in (179 cm) and weighing 172 lb (78 kg), Husiev primarily operated as a right midfielder or right-back, though he was also capable of playing as a winger or left-sided midfielder.

During his tenure at Dynamo Kyiv, Husiev achieved considerable success, winning the Ukrainian Premier League five times (2003-04, 2006-07, 2008-09, 2014-15, 2015-16). He also secured five Ukrainian Cup titles (2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2013-14, 2014-15) and five Ukrainian Super Cups (2004, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011).
On 20 September 2015, Husiev achieved a personal milestone by scoring his 100th competitive senior goal from a penalty in a 2-0 away victory against FC Volyn Lutsk in the Ukrainian Premier League.
After departing Dynamo Kyiv in December 2016, Husiev made a return to the club on 13 June 2017, signing a one-year contract for the 2017-18 season. His final match for Dynamo Kyiv was on 19 May 2018, against rival FC Shakhtar Donetsk. He played the last 15 minutes of the match, contributing to a 2-1 victory. On 30 March 2014, during a Ukrainian Premier League match against FC Dnipro, Oleh Husiev was involved in a severe on-field collision. While contesting an aerial ball, he received a knee to the head from Dnipro goalkeeper Denys Boyko, who was on loan from Dynamo Kyiv. The impact rendered Husiev unconscious, and he fell motionless to the ground.
In a remarkable display of immediate action and sportsmanship, Dnipro midfielder Jaba Kankava swiftly recognized the severity of the situation. Kankava ran to Husiev, opened his mouth, and moved his tongue to prevent him from suffocating. Kankava's quick thinking and decisive intervention are widely credited with saving Husiev's life, highlighting the critical importance of immediate medical attention and camaraderie in sports.
1.3. International Career
Oleh Husiev had a distinguished international career with the Ukraine national team, earning 98 caps and scoring 13 goals, making him one of the nation's most capped players and among its top international goalscorers.
He made his senior international debut for Ukraine on 20 August 2003, coming on as a half-time substitute for Serhiy Tkachenko in a 0-2 friendly defeat to Romania at the Shakhtar Stadium in Donetsk. His first international goal came on 17 November 2004, when he opened the scoring in the ninth minute of a 3-0 away victory against Turkey in a 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification match.
Husiev played a crucial role in Ukraine's first-ever appearance at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. He participated in all five of Ukraine's matches as they progressed to the quarter-finals. A notable moment occurred in the Round of 16 match against Switzerland, where he scored the decisive penalty in the penalty shootout that secured Ukraine's place in the last eight.
