Kim Shin-young's football journey began in his youth, where he attended Iri High School from 1999 to 2001. Following high school, he continued his academic and athletic pursuits at Hanyang University from 2002 to 2005. During his university career, he was a prominent player, earning accolades such as being a Korean representative at the 2003 Summer Universiade. In 2004, he was named MVP and top scorer at the Hummel Korea Cup National University Football Tournament and contributed to South Korea's victory in the International LG Cup in Vietnam. Kim Shin-young began his professional career in Japan with Cerezo Osaka, joining the club in 2007. He made his J.League debut on May 3, 2007, in a J2 League match against Tokushima Vortis at Nagai No. 2 Athletics Stadium. He scored his first J.League goal on July 7, 2007, in a J2 League fixture against Kyoto Sanga F.C. at Nishikyogoku Athletic Stadium.
