Kim joined FC Seoul as a free agent in 2016 directly after high school. He made his professional debut for FC Seoul on 20 April 2016 in an AFC Champions League match against Buriram United FC. Later that year, on 28 August 2016, he made his K League debut in a match against Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.

2.1. FC Seoul
Kim Jeong-hwan joined FC Seoul in 2016 after graduating from Shingal High School. He made his professional debut with the club on 20 April 2016 in the AFC Champions League against Buriram United FC. His K League debut followed on 28 August 2016 in a match against Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. During his tenure with FC Seoul, he was part of the squad that won the K League 1 title in the 2016 season.
2.2. Gwangju FC
On 27 December 2017, Kim Jeong-hwan transferred to Gwangju FC alongside his teammate from FC Seoul, Im Min-hyuk. While with Gwangju FC, he played a role in the club's success, which culminated in them winning the K League 2 title in the 2019 season.
2.3. Seoul E-Land FC
Ahead of the 2021 K League 2 season, Kim Jeong-hwan moved to Seoul E-Land FC as a free agent. He scored his first goal for the club on 29 February 2021, in a league match against Busan IPark.
