2. Professional Baseball Career

2.1. Minor League Career
Padilla began his professional career when he was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 24th round, 709th overall, of the 1998 Major League Baseball Draft. He spent six seasons developing within the Twins' minor league system. In 2003, he was promoted to the AAA affiliate, the Rochester Red Wings, where he achieved a record of 7 wins.
2.2. Major League Career
Padilla made his MLB debut on July 16, 2004. His journey to the majors included a trade to the New York Yankees on September 2, 2003, in exchange for Jesse Orosco. He pitched in 6 games for the Yankees before being designated for assignment (DFA) and claimed off waivers by the Cincinnati Reds on September 3, 2004. With the Reds, he appeared in 12 games, securing his first MLB win despite a high earned run average (ERA) of 10.67. After the 2004 season, he became a free agent on October 15, 2004.
On November 29, 2004, Padilla signed with the New York Mets. During the 2005 season, he began with the Mets' AAA affiliate, the Norfolk Tides, where he had a strong performance, recording 3 wins, 2 losses, and 11 saves with a 1.42 ERA over 37 appearances. His impressive performance led to his promotion to the Mets in mid-July 2005. As a relief pitcher for the Mets, Padilla appeared in 24 games, achieving a notable record of 3 wins, 1 loss, 1 save, and 5 holds, alongside an excellent 1.49 ERA.

A significant setback in Padilla's career occurred in March 2006 when he underwent Tommy John surgery. This major reconstructive surgery on his elbow forced him to miss the entire 2006 season. He also missed the 2007 season, as he had no opportunities to pitch in the minor leagues. Following his prolonged recovery, he became a free agent on December 12, 2007, after not being offered a new contract by the Mets.

Following his release from the Mets in July 2008, Juan Padilla continued his professional career in independent baseball leagues and the Puerto Rican Winter League. On February 18, 2008, he had re-signed a minor league contract with the Mets, receiving a non-roster invitation to spring training, but he was released on July 13, 2008.
On July 26, 2008, Padilla signed with the York Revolution of the independent Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. He did not return to the Revolution for the 2009 season. In 2009, he played for the American Defenders of New Hampshire in the Can-Am League, a team that was renamed the Pittsfield Colonials in 2010. He continued to play for the Pittsfield Colonials in 2010. In 2011, he started the season with the Bridgeport Bluefish of the Atlantic League. On July 21, 2011, he signed with the Leones de Yucatán of the Mexican League, where he appeared in 8 games, recording 2 wins, 3 losses, and a 4.30 ERA. During the off-seasons from 2008 to 2011, Padilla consistently played in his native Puerto Rican Winter League, the Liga de Béisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente (LBPRC).
3. International Career
Juan Miguel Padilla was selected to represent the Puerto Rico national baseball team in the inaugural 2006 World Baseball Classic. This international tournament provided him an opportunity to play for his home country on a global stage.
4. Retirement
Juan Miguel Padilla concluded his professional playing career after the 2012 season. He spent the fall and off-season of 2012 playing in the LBPRC, which marked his final professional appearances before his retirement.
