He made his debut for the club on 6 September 1947 in a Second Division match, a 2-1 home victory against Luton Town. During that season, he made two more appearances playing at outside right. In the subsequent 1948-49 First Division season, he featured three additional times, playing at outside left.

Following his stint with Birmingham City, Hughes returned to non-league football, playing for Tamworth and later with Atherstone Town. In 1955, his involvement in football continued when he was appointed assistant manager of Tamworth.
