Initially, he was assigned to the Gulf Coast League Red Sox to start his journey in professional baseball. On July 6, he was promoted to the Lowell Spinners. On June 3, 2015, Gunkel was traded to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for Alejandro De Aza.
