3. High school career
Green attended St. Jude Educational Institute in Montgomery, Alabama. He led St. Jude to the Class A State Championship in both 2006 and 2008, and was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2006 tournament. Throughout his high school career, Green accumulated more than 2,500 points. He was also a member of the National Honor Society at St. Jude.
His high school achievements garnered him several prestigious awards, including being selected for the 2008 McDonald's All-American Boys Game and earning the title of Alabama Mr. Basketball in 2008. The Alabama Sportswriters Association recognized him as "Player of the Year" three times (2006, 2007, and 2008). According to ESPN, Green was rated as the #6 overall prospect and the #1 power forward in the 2008 recruiting class. On August 23, 2007, JaMychal Green committed to play college basketball for the University of Alabama, choosing them over Ole Miss.
During his freshman year at Alabama, Green started 31 of 32 games. He averaged 11.6 points per game and led all SEC freshmen in rebounding with 7.9 rebounds per game. He was also second among all SEC players with five double-doubles, including a streak of four consecutive double-doubles against Georgia, Vanderbilt, Florida, and Mississippi State. In his sophomore season (2009-10), Green finished ninth in the SEC in rebounding, averaging 7.2 rebounds per game, and 17th in scoring, with 14.1 points per game. He scored in double figures in 10 of the last 11 games of the season, including an eight-game streak. Green was named to the 2009 Old Spice Classic all-tournament team. A notable moment occurred when he secured a win against No. 15 Michigan with a put-back dunk with 5.4 seconds remaining, then blocked Michigan's game-tying shot attempt as time expired. He achieved a career-high 27 points along with 13 rebounds in a victory over Mercer, earning him the SEC Player of the Week honor.
For his junior season (2010-11), Green changed his jersey number from 32 to 1 and was named to the first team All-SEC by the coaches. JaMychal Green's professional career began after he went undrafted in the 2012 NBA draft, leading him to play in the NBA Development League (now G League) and overseas before establishing himself in the NBA.
5.1. Pre-NBA career
After going undrafted in the 2012 NBA draft, Green joined the San Antonio Spurs for the 2012 NBA Summer League. On October 22, 2012, he signed with the Spurs but was waived four days later. On November 1, he was acquired by the Austin Toros of the NBA Development League as an affiliate player of San Antonio. In 44 games for the Toros during the 2012-13 season, he averaged 12.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game.
In July 2013, Green participated in the Los Angeles Clippers' Summer League team. He signed with the Clippers on September 30, 2013, but was waived on October 8. On October 31, he signed with Chorale Roanne in France for the 2013-14 season, where he averaged 11.8 points and 6.6 rebounds in 25 games.
Green returned to the San Antonio Spurs for the 2014 NBA Summer League in July 2014. He signed with the Spurs on August 6, 2014, but was waived for a second time on October 25. On November 1, he was re-acquired by the Austin Spurs. He played 20 games for Austin, maintaining strong statistics with averages of 23.0 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.65 blocks.
5.2. NBA career
Green's NBA career began with a series of short contracts before he found a more permanent role with the Memphis Grizzlies.
5.2.1. San Antonio Spurs
On January 18, 2015, the San Antonio Spurs signed Green to a 10-day contract, filling a roster spot made available by the waiving of Austin Daye. After his contract expired on January 28, the Spurs opted not to re-sign him to a second 10-day deal, and he returned to the Austin Spurs.
5.2.2. Memphis Grizzlies
Before playing another game for Austin, Green was signed by the Memphis Grizzlies to a 10-day contract on February 2, 2015. He signed a second 10-day contract on February 19, and then a multi-year contract on March 2.
Green returned to the Grizzlies for the 2015-16 season, initially playing decent minutes off the bench. His playing time increased significantly after the All-Star break due to multiple teammate injuries. On March 6, 2016, he scored a then-career-high 17 points in a loss to the Phoenix Suns. Three days later, he recorded 17 points and a then-career-high 13 rebounds in a loss to the Boston Celtics. Two days after that, on March 11, he set a new career-high with 21 points and added 10 rebounds in a 121-114 overtime win against the New Orleans Pelicans.
For the 2016-17 season, Green became a starter under head coach David Fizdale, replacing Zach Randolph. On December 8, 2016, he grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds in an 88-86 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers, surpassing his previous best of 17 rebounds recorded earlier that week against the Pelicans. On February 4, 2017, Green scored a career-high 29 points in a 107-99 win against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
After the 2016-17 season, Green became a restricted free agent. On September 27, 2017, he re-signed with the Grizzlies on a two-year contract worth over 17.00 M USD.
He started the first two games of the 2018-19 season but then missed the next 12 games due to a broken jaw. Upon his return, he transitioned into a reserve role. On December 7, he scored a season-high 24 points in a 107-103 win over the Pelicans. On January 12, he recorded 24 points and 11 rebounds in a 112-108 loss to the Miami Heat.
5.2.3. Los Angeles Clippers
On February 7, 2019, JaMychal Green was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers along with Garrett Temple in exchange for Avery Bradley. On July 18, 2019, Green re-signed with the Clippers.
5.2.4. Denver Nuggets
On November 30, 2020, Green signed a multi-year contract with the Denver Nuggets. On February 8, 2022, he scored 20 points off the bench in a 132-115 victory against the New York Knicks.
5.2.5. Golden State Warriors
On June 23, 2022, Green was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder along with a protected 2027 first-round pick, in exchange for the draft rights to Peyton Watson and two future second-round picks. On July 20, Green and the Thunder reached a contract buyout agreement. On August 1, 2022, Green officially signed with the Golden State Warriors.
On May 5, 2023, during Game 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals against the Los Angeles Lakers, Green made a spot start due to Kevon Looney's illness. In 13 minutes of play, he contributed 15 points, including three 3-pointers, in a 127-100 victory.
