Horst Wolter was born on 8 June 1942 in Berlin, then part of Nazi Germany. His formative years in football began with SC Charlottenburg, where he honed his skills as a goalkeeper before making his professional debut.
2. Club Career
Horst Wolter's professional club career was primarily defined by his significant tenures at Eintracht Braunschweig and Hertha BSC, during which he became a prominent figure in the Bundesliga.
Wolter joined Eintracht Braunschweig in 1963 and remained with the club until 1972, making 201 appearances as a goalkeeper. He was a key player in the team that achieved a historic Bundesliga title in 1967, marking a significant milestone in the club's history. His consistent performance contributed greatly to Braunschweig's success during this period.
In 1972, Wolter transferred to Hertha BSC, where he played until 1977, adding 48 more appearances in the West German top-flight league. Over the course of his club career, Wolter played nearly 250 matches in the Bundesliga, with a total of 249 appearances for both Eintracht Braunschweig and Hertha BSC, during which he did not score any goals.
3. International Career
Horst Wolter represented the West Germany national team from 1967 to 1970, earning a total of 13 caps. He played a notable role for Die Mannschaft (The Team) during his time with the national squad.
His most significant international appearance came at the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. Wolter played his final match for the national team in the third-place play-off against Uruguay, where he stepped in for the regular first-choice goalkeeper, Sepp Maier. West Germany secured third place in the tournament.
