1. Early life and background
Holly Humberstone was born in Grantham, England, on December 17, 1999, and grew up in the rural county of Lincolnshire. She is one of four sisters, and both of her parents are doctors working for the NHS. Humberstone attended Kesteven and Grantham Girls' Grammar School before studying at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts.
Her interest in music began at a young age, and she started writing songs during her childhood. She noted that there was "no music scene growing up in rural Lincolnshire," which led her to pursue her musical endeavors independently. Humberstone was a violinist for the Lincolnshire Youth Symphony Orchestra. Her talent was first spotted by a manager after she performed on her local BBC Music Introducing radio show.

Her debut extended play (EP), also titled Falling Asleep at the Wheel, was released on August 14, 2020. Her growing visibility led to her inclusion in Vevo DSCVR's Artists to Watch 2021, where she performed her song "Vanilla". She was also listed on the BBC Sound of 2021 list.
In March 2021, prior to the release of her single "Haunted House" and her second EP, Humberstone secured significant recording contracts. She signed with Polydor Records in the United Kingdom and Darkroom/Interscope Records in the United States. Additionally, she signed a publishing deal with Universal Music Publishing Group. On October 13, 2021, she performed "Scarlett" from her second EP, The Walls Are Way Too Thin, on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. On December 9, 2021, Humberstone was announced as the recipient of the Brit Award for Rising Star at the 2022 Brit Awards, an award recognizing promising new acts in pop music.
