Hilda Koronel was born Susan Reid on January 17, 1957, in Angeles City, Pampanga, Philippines. Her dual heritage comes from her Filipino mother and her American father, who was a serviceman stationed at Clark Air Base.

Koronel completed her secondary education at Manuel L. Quezon University in Quiapo. She later pursued and finished International Studies at Maryknoll College, which is now known as Miriam College.

Koronel began her professional acting career in the early 1970s as a contract star for Lea Productions. During her initial years, she was frequently paired with fellow actors such as Ed Finlan, Walter Navarro, Tirso Cruz III, and Jay Ilagan, who later became her husband. Her natural acting talent quickly caught the attention of acclaimed director Lino Brocka, who cast her in a weekly drama show titled Hilda. Her career took off rapidly, culminating in her becoming the youngest recipient of the FAMAS Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1970 at the age of just 13, for her role in the film Santiago!.

Koronel is celebrated for her roles in several critically acclaimed films, especially her collaborations with director Lino Brocka. In 1975, she starred in Brocka's classic Manila in the Claws of Light, a film that garnered six FAMAS Awards in 1976. The following year, in 1976, she appeared in another Brocka masterpiece, Insiang, which went on to win both a FAMAS Award and a Gawad Urian Award in 1977. Her performance in Insiang is particularly noted as a landmark in Philippine cinema. More recently, in 2013, she received a Luna Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Mistress. Throughout her career, she has accumulated three awards and received 11 nominations.

Her film Insiang (1976) also won a FAMAS Award in 1977.

She also has a daughter named Isabel with Bambi del Castillo, and another daughter named Gabrielle with Spanky Monserrat. Her son, Diego, is with Dr. Victor Lopez. In May 2000, Koronel married Filipino-American businessman Ralph Moore Jr. in Laughlin, Nevada. In total, Koronel is a mother to six children.
