Ryan also became a regular on the long-running Western series Gunsmoke during its 20th and final season, playing the character of Miss Hannah (Cobb). She later reprised this role in the 1987 television movie Gunsmoke: Return to Dodge.
Throughout her career, Ryan appeared in numerous other television shows. She played Rosie Carlson in the soap opera Days of Our Lives from 1976 to 1979 and Sister Agatha in General Hospital in 1989. She also had roles in children's television, appearing as Gertrude Grouch in Sigmund and the Sea Monsters in 1975 and as Ms. Goodbody in the 1970s children's show New Zoo Revue. In the 1980s, she was seen as Mrs. Belmont in No Soap, Radio and as Tillie Russell in the short-lived CBS series The Wizard from 1986 to 1987. Her final regular television role was on The Dave Thomas Comedy Show. Ryan's extensive guest appearances spanned many popular series, including Adam-12, The Brady Bunch, CHiPs, Columbo (uncredited in "Dagger of the Mind"), The Dukes of Hazzard, Quantum Leap, Night Court, Taxi, Baywatch, and The Commish, which marked her final appearance.

4. Personal life
Fran Ryan's personal life was marked by profound tragedy. She married her first husband, Walter Kenneth Wayne, in Fairbanks, Alaska, in 1949. Sadly, Walter died in January 1951 when a plane he was piloting crashed, while Ryan was pregnant with their first and only child. Their son, Christopher, was born in April 1951. Ryan remarried in January 1953 to Howard Schafer. However, tragedy struck again when Howard also perished in a plane crash in Oregon in May 1953, in a plane he was piloting. The wreckage of Howard's plane was not discovered until 15 years later, in November 1968. Despite the discovery of the wreckage, the remains of Howard and his passengers were never found. At the crash site, only a woman's shoe, four combs, and two pairs of eyeglasses were recovered.
5. Death
Fran Ryan died on January 15, 2000, in Burbank, California, at the age of 83. The cause of her death was illness. Following her passing, she was cremated. Her ashes were later interred in 2004 in the family plot at the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward, California, where she was laid to rest alongside her mother, Mary.
