1. Overview
Chris Brookes (born August 24, 1991) is an English professional wrestler who debuted in 2007. He spent his early career predominantly in the United Kingdom and European independent circuits, notably establishing himself in Progress Wrestling and Revolution Pro Wrestling, where he achieved tag team success as part of CCK. In 2019, Brookes made a significant move to Japan, committing fully to DDT Pro-Wrestling and rapidly becoming a prominent figure in the Japanese professional wrestling scene. His career in Japan has seen him capture multiple championships, including the KO-D Openweight Championship (twice), the DDT Universal Championship (twice, as its inaugural holder), and the DDT Extreme Championship. He is also known for his self-produced event series, "Baka Gaijin + Friends," and his unique in-ring persona and philosophical approach to wrestling.
2. Early Career (2007-2018)
Chris Brookes' early professional wrestling career was primarily built on the independent circuits in the United Kingdom and Europe, where he honed his skills and gained recognition before his eventual move to Japan.
2.1. Independent Circuit Debut
Brookes made his professional wrestling debut in 2007. During this period, he actively competed across various independent promotions in the UK and Europe, with Fight Club: Pro serving as a significant base for his early career. These initial years laid the foundational groundwork for his development as a professional wrestler.
2.2. Progress Wrestling
From 2017 to 2020, and again in 2022, Chris Brookes was a consistent presence in Progress Wrestling. A notable match occurred on August 24, 2019, at a Progress x APC collaborative event in France, where Brookes competed in a three-way match against Tristan Archer and Aigle Blanc for the APC Championship but was unsuccessful. He also held the Progress Tag Team Championship three times, once with Kid Lykos.
2.3. Revolution Pro Wrestling
Chris Brookes made a significant impact in Revolution Pro Wrestling (RevPro) between 2017 and 2018. In his very first match for the promotion, he teamed with Travis Banks to form the tag team CCK, or Commonwealth Catch Kings, and together they won the RPW Undisputed British Tag Team Championship from Charlie Sterling and Joel Redman.
CCK successfully defended their titles against several notable teams, including Ryan Smile and Shane Strickland, Sami Callihan and Martin Stone, and Los Ingobernables de Japón (Bushi and Hiromu Takahashi). Their championship reign concluded when they lost the belts to Moustache Mountain (Trent Seven and Tyler Bate).
CCK also had a successful showing at Global Wars 2017, a co-promoted event with NJPW. On the first night, they defeated Chaos (Rocky Romero and Yoshi-Hashi). On the second night, they teamed with Kid Lykos to defeat Gedo, Hirooki Goto, and Yoshi-Hashi. Later, CCK attempted to regain the tag team titles from new champions Suzuki-gun (Minoru Suzuki and Zack Sabre Jr.) at Epic Encounter 2018 but were unable to reclaim the championships.
3. Career in Japan (2019-present)
Chris Brookes' career took a definitive turn when he moved to Japan in 2019, establishing himself as a key figure in the Japanese professional wrestling scene, particularly within DDT Pro-Wrestling. In Japan, his ring name is クリス・ブルックスKurisu BurukkusuJapanese. His decision to move to Japan in 2020 signified his full commitment to DDT, expressing a preference for the creative freedom offered by DDT over the more corporate structures of larger promotions like WWE UK.
3.1. DDT Pro-Wrestling
Brookes began wrestling for DDT Pro-Wrestling in June 2019 during his initial visit to Japan. He quickly formed a significant tag team with Masahiro Takanashi, naming themselves CDK (Calamari Drunken Kings). At Wrestle Peter Pan 2019, Brookes and Takanashi secured a victory over Moonlight Express (Mao and Mike Bailey). That same year, at Summer Vacation, Brookes challenged for the KO-D Openweight Championship but lost to Konosuke Takeshita.
From November 29 to December 28, 2019, Brookes participated in the D-Oh Grand Prix 2020 tournament, where he tied with Tetsuya Endo for first place in Block A, though he lost the subsequent decision match. In January 2020, Brookes announced his permanent move to Japan, stating his desire for DDT to be his primary commitment.
On February 23, 2020, at Into The Fight 2020, he defeated Konosuke Takeshita to become the inaugural DDT Universal Champion. His first reign was short-lived, as he lost the title to Daisuke Sasaki on March 20, 2020, at Judgement 2020: DDT 23rd Anniversary. He later regained the DDT Universal Championship for a second reign.
On March 14, 2021, at Day Dream Believer 2021, Brookes won his first DDT Extreme Championship title by defeating Shunma Katsumata in a Barbed Wire Coffin Deathmatch. On March 20, 2022, at Judgement 2022: DDT 25th Anniversary, CDK (Brookes and Takanashi) defeated Disaster Box (Harashima and Naomi Yoshimura) to win their first KO-D Tag Team Championship. On April 23, 2022, Brookes won the King of Street Wrestling tournament, defeating Abdullah Kobayashi in the final.
On May 21, 2023, Brookes won the King of DDT Tournament for the first time in his fourth attempt, defeating Jun Akiyama in the semifinals and Kazusada Higuchi in the finals. This victory granted him a title shot for the KO-D Openweight Championship. On July 23, 2023, at Wrestle Peter Pan 2023, Brookes defeated Yuji Hino to become the 81st KO-D Openweight Champion. After successfully defending the title against Shigehiro Irie and Saki Akai, Brookes lost the championship to Yuki Ueno at Ultimate Party 2023. Immediately after this loss, Brookes announced the formation of a new stable within DDT called SCHADENFREUDE International, consisting of himself, Masahiro Takanashi, Antonio Honda, and Takeshi Masada.
On November 4, 2024, Brookes defeated Shinya Aoki at Sumida Dramatic Dream to regain the KO-D Openweight Championship, becoming the 84th holder of the title.
3.2. Baka Gaijin + Friends
On December 13, 2022, Chris Brookes and fellow British wrestler Drew Parker co-produced an event celebrating Brookes' 15th anniversary in professional wrestling. The event, titled "Baka Gaijin + Friends," was uniquely held at Arena Shimokitazawa, a curry restaurant in Setagaya that lacked a traditional wrestling ring, accommodating an audience of 50 customers. In the main event, Calamari Drunken Kings (Brookes and Takanashi) defeated Parker and Mao. Since this inaugural event, "Baka Gaijin + Friends" has evolved into a dedicated brand that hosts monthly wrestling shows at Arena Shimokitazawa, showcasing a unique, intimate wrestling experience.
4. Wrestling Style and Persona
Chris Brookes' wrestling style and persona are characterized by a unique blend of technical proficiency, emotional intensity, and quirky eccentricities. He identifies his ideal wrestling philosophy as akin to a "punk rocker" unbound by conventional rules or corporate expectations, prioritizing emotional expression in his matches. This philosophy famously led him to decline an offer from WWE UK in 2018, as he sought to pursue a more emotionally driven style of professional wrestling.
Brookes is also known for a peculiar character quirk involving mascots. This originated from a childhood experience at Disneyland, where he witnessed Mickey Mouse seemingly removing his head to smoke, leading him to confront what he perceived as the "truth" behind mascots. As a result, Brookes developed a compulsion to attack mascots whenever they appear. He has notably assaulted Pokotan, a DDT mascot, and famously caused a brawl at a press conference by attacking Chiitan☆, another well-known mascot. In 2024, he also targeted Akos-chan, a local mascot, at an event in Akosu.
5. Signature Moves
Chris Brookes employs a diverse set of signature moves that highlight his technical and aggressive in-ring approach.
- Playing Mantis Bomb: A double underhook piledriver. He hooks both of his opponent's arms in a reverse full nelson position, lifts their body vertically, and then drops to a sitting position to drive the opponent's head into the mat.
- Octopus Stretch: A submission hold, specifically a variation of the octopus hold.
- Ito Special: A unique variation of the Texas Cloverleaf submission hold. Unlike the standard maneuver, Brookes clasps his hands together in a prayer-like gesture while applying the hold.
- Kenka Kick: A stiff, often surprising, kick to the opponent.
- Death By Roll-Up: A unique pinning combination that starts as a schoolboy roll-up. From the schoolboy position, Brookes shifts onto his back and hooks the opponent's legs, intensifying the pin.
- Bacchus: A modified Gannosuke Clutch applied from a front facelock position. This move was originally utilized by his tag team partner, Masahiro Takanashi.
