Billy Campbell's early life saw him move between different educational environments as his parents divorced when he was young.

Campbell was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, on July 7, 1959. For his education, he attended Fork Union Military Academy, Western Albemarle High School, and New Trier East High School.

2. Acting career
Campbell's acting career began in the early 1980s, gradually building a profile through diverse roles across television and film, leading to his breakthrough as a leading man and subsequent critically acclaimed performances.
2.1. Early roles and breakthrough
Campbell's first screen appearance was in an episode of the popular 1980s sitcom Family Ties. His first prominent role came as Luke Fuller, a recurring character and Steven Carrington's lover, on the television series Dynasty. Campbell appeared in the fifth season (1984-85) when Dynasty was the top-rated show on American television. Following this success, he secured a regular role as Detective Joey Indelli on the NBC series Crime Story, which aired from 1986 to 1988.
Campbell was initially the first choice of the producers of Star Trek: The Next Generation to play the role of William Riker, but the part ultimately went to Jonathan Frakes. However, Campbell did guest-star in the show's second season, portraying the title character, Captain Thadiun Okona, in the episode "The Outrageous Okona". His major breakthrough arrived in 1991 when he played the lead role of Cliff Secord in the Walt Disney Pictures superhero film The Rocketeer, which significantly elevated his public profile.

The series ran for three seasons until 2002, earning Campbell a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actor in a Dramatic Series. He then had a regular role as Jordan Collier on the USA Network sci-fi series The 4400, which aired for four seasons between 2004 and 2007. In 2005, he had a recurring role as Carter Buckley in the teen drama The O.C..
Following a recurring role in the 2010 revival of Melrose Place, Campbell took on the prominent role of mayoral candidate Darren Richmond in the AMC series The Killing, an American adaptation of the Danish series of the same name. His work on the show spanned seasons one, two, and a return for the final season in 2014. From 2014 to 2015, he starred as Dr. Alan Farragut in the SYFY series Helix. In 2017, he appeared in a recurring role as Dale Tyler in the second season of the Swedish crime drama Modus.
From 2017 to 2020, Campbell starred as Detective John Cardinal in the Canadian television drama series Cardinal. For this role, he received critical acclaim, winning the Canadian Screen Award for Best Actor in a Limited Series or Television Film at the 6th Canadian Screen Awards in 2018, the 7th Canadian Screen Awards in 2019, and the 8th Canadian Screen Awards in 2020. He also lent his voice to the character Dave Secord in The Rocketeer animated TV series from 2019 to 2020. Campbell has appeared in a variety of film roles. In 1992, he portrayed Quincey Morris, a Texan vampire hunter, in Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula. In 2002, he played the abusive husband, Mitch Hiller, of Jennifer Lopez's character in the thriller Enough. The following year, he starred as serial killer Ted Bundy in the 2003 television film The Stranger Beside Me. In 2003, he also played Major General George Pickett in the American Civil War film Gods and Generals.
In 2012, Campbell took on the role of Mr. Billings, the stern but kindly father, in the independent film Fat Kid Rules the World. In 2013, he portrayed Abraham Lincoln in the National Geographic television adaptation of the Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard book, Killing Lincoln. In 2022, he appeared as Dr. David Secord in the Norwegian monster film Troll, and also as George L.D. Gibbs in the historical drama Narvik, where he was credited as Ollie Campbell. He is also set to appear in an untitled I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel in 2025.

Campbell has received significant recognition for his acting:
- In 2000, he was named one of the "World's 50 Most Beautiful People" by People magazine.

3. Personal life
Campbell was engaged to his The Rocketeer co-star Jennifer Connelly. Their relationship began by the end of filming in 1991 when he was 31 and she was 20. They were together for five years before breaking up in 1996.
Campbell is married to a Norwegian woman and they have two children together. They reside on her family's farm in Rygge, Norway (which became part of Moss on January 1, 2020). He is also a dedicated rugby enthusiast, having played for several clubs including the Virginia Rugby Football Club, Chicago Lions RFC, and the Santa Monica Rugby Club. Campbell holds permanent resident immigration status in Canada and maintains an apartment in Vancouver, British Columbia.
